View Full Version : FOFC State Gobblin’ Tournament

WSUCougar
04-04-2003, 08:42 AM
Alright, here’s another chance to defend the honor and glory of your beloved home state (or to ruin someone else’s!). Canada, too.

The rules are as follows:

(1) Each state has 10 points available in each turn (24-hour period); each “gobbled” state earns one additional point per turn.

(2) FOFC members may only post once per turn (posting points, I mean – any added strategy and smack posts are free). You may only post for one state per turn. Anyone can post points for a state, and you can use any or all of the state’s points in your one post.

(3) Once all of a state’s points have been posted for that turn, they are locked (i.e., no editing or changes can be made). In other words, the FIRST post(s) which use up the state's points are the ones that will count.

(4) Points are used in one of three ways: (a) gobble attempt on an adjacent state – each point spent is worth a 20% chance of success; (b) gobble attempt on a non-adjacent state (also known as an “indirect gobble”) – each point spent is worth a 10% chance; (c) counter-gobble – each point subtracts 5% from any gobble attempts against the state. IMPORTANT: If no one posts for a state all of its points are used for counter-gobbling as its default turn.

(5) I will determine the success of all gobbling attempts (by dice roll) and then post the results, which starts a new 24-hour turn. If two or more states gobble the same state, it will be gobbled by the state with the highest gobble %, or if it’s a tie, no one will get the gobble.

(6) Once a state has been successfully gobbled, it is out of the tournament. It will provide one point to the state which gobbled it, and will be considered that state’s territory in determining adjacent states.

(7) States which meet at a corner (such as the Four Corners of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado) are considered adjacent. Hawaii is not adjacent to anyone. Canada, while not a U.S. state, is considered one big one for the purposes of this game (and is adjacent to Alaska, among other states).

(8) No post editing, please. This will have a negative impact on the game.

(9) Be wary of leaving your state defenseless!

(10) Isn’t “gobble” a funny sounding word? Gobble gobble gobble!

Example of play:

Player A posts:
“Missouri: 4 gobble points on Illinois; 2 indirect gobble points on Hawaii; 4 counter-gobbles.”

That means 80% (4 x 20%) chance of gobbling IL, 20% (2 x 10%) chance of gobbling Hawaii, and 20% (4 x 5%) counter-gobbling.

If you gobble a state, you get a bonus of 1 point

This is what it said in the rules:
(6) Once a state has been successfully gobbled, it is out of the tournament. It will provide one point to the state which gobbled it, and will be considered that state’s territory in determining adjacent states.

Sorry, Masked, you did miss the deadline. But here’s an explanation of Louisiana’s Turn 3 gobble attempts:

vs. Texas, (6) x 20 = 120 gobbles; vs. Mississippi, (2) x 20 = 40 gobbles

Both TX and MS defaulted (no entry) to all counter-gobbles, so (10) x 5 = 50

So…120-50 = 70% vs. TX, and 40-50 = 0% vs. MS

WV had already been gobbled by Virginia. Why did it loose PA and OH when neither of those two states had been gobbled by anyone else?

WSUCougar
04-10-2003, 10:05 AM
Under the "State Update" section, states are listed with their gobbled states in parentheses. This is only to indicate what their boundaries are - the state itself is just one big entity.

So in West Virginia's case, after Turn 3 it was listed as: West Virginia* (PA, OH, KY) = 12 points. This meant that though it's original territory was gone (it being marked with an asterisk), its new territory was comprised of PA/OH/KY.

During Turn 4, North Carolina successfully gobbled WV (the entity, not the original state territory), and thus PA/OH/KY.

Does that help any?

Under that assumption, can't one participant come along at the end of the game and gobble up the state with the greatest amount of points and win without really participating much?

I assumed that since I took over PA as WV was being gobbled, that PA became the new territory of WV, while the original territory of WV became part of VA. Then, I expanded my territory to include OH and KY. Does that make sense? :)

That's a good point. I agree. But I was just playing by the rules given by WSU here:

It wouldn't really be possible, the state with all the territory would have so many more points than the other state...

You don't have to be bordering the state to gobble it.
