I wasn't terribly crazy about the obviously pre-conceived move to put the old player back into the game, but I think the cast of characters has great potential. There actually appears to be a couple of pretty good cooks in this group judging from their signature dishes.
Love the cliffhanger at the end, though I'm sure it will disappoint.
Saw this was recording last night so I went to check it out (no idea a new season was starting). When I turned it to FOX, it had a message from DISH saying they knew the channel was off-air and were working to fix the problem.
Sigh. This is the same FOX station that goes off-air during the one or two only shows I ever get interested in (Idol, HK) at least twice a month. The same FOX station that actually had technical difficulties and made us miss the EFFING SUPER BOWL the year before last.
It really is infuriating.

The guy going off at Gordon at the end was...amusing to say the least. "I AIN'T NO BITCH!" I have a feeling Ramsey could smoke him if it came to blows.

Loved when Lovely's team was doing their punishment and she stopped to ask, "when are we going to eat lunch?". Fantastic.

My wife tried to watch the premiere, but she couldn't even make it through the preview at the very beginning. We used to love this show, but the commercials and previews just make it seem like they want to make the show more and more "extreme." We didn't really try to watch last season, but then I read about the episode where they had to identify the different cuts of meat and Gordon told everyone to grab a barf bag. Ugh. That would explain the early previews that always showed some chick vomiting into a bucket. That wasn't the reason we didn't watch, but it looked like they were changing the tone of the show.
Now, this season, within the first five minutes, everyone's shouting (not just Chef Ramsey), people are bleeding, and frankly, nothing in the preview even made us laugh. The unintentional comedy is what made the show great to me, and now they've made it look like a show where they just want to push the contestants' physical limits to see how far they can go before people start getting seriously sick or injured.
I guess we just liked the show better when it was about people screwing up risotto and getting insulted. :(

That guy could be just a plant. Maybe just Ramsey's Chef for the male side. It look so fake.
That guy is awesome, I hope he's not a plant. "I AIN'T NO BITCH" was just the capper. I love how pissed he got about eating lunch. "This ain't what I'm about!" Dude, you're going to get angry because you have to eat lunch and get on a yacht? Try to relax, just a smidgen.
I don't know how that Lovely chick managed to not even get nominated, let alone survive the cut. She fucked up so much stuff, they even forgot that she cooked all the fondant, when they were picking nominees. And I love the 'taking an hour off' precedent that was set by Lacey last year, and carried on by Lovely now....how is that an option?....if you're not going to get called out for it, I'd skip all the punishments. "Guys, I'm feeling 'nauseated', I'm going to go lie down for a minute or 600."

This is a side note--why does it seem that so many chefs smoke?
Bourdain
many of the ones on Top Chef
many of the ones on HK
not that they're all chefs, but a lot of the Next Food Network Star entrants, do, too
It just strikes me that people who smoke tend to get a diminished and altered sense of smell and taste, I can't imagine that helps when cooking first-class food.
Also, spoiler about the latest episode
How did Robert qualify to fly in those planes? There is no way he's not a risk owing to his heart issues and massive obesity.

Dola,
I'm tired of seeing them make such a...big deal about Dave's thumb fracture/ligament damage. Yes it sucks. But they don't show him dropping stuff all over the kitchen, but they decide they have to emphasize that it's messed up by showing him drop his frozen pot pie...what, 3 times?
I've had that exact injury. I was able to cook all the dishes I normally cook (and so far, it seems he's doing OK in the kitchen), including the prep. Cleaning...that's another matter. And frozen/microwave meal is EASY to do one-handed, why make such a big deal of his issues in his "off" time?

Not much drama at the end there. Ramsey -had- to send home the person he did in my opinion. I don't think I've ever seen anything so lopsided in the entire series.
And tk, smoking is high among chefs for the same reason it's high among retail workers. It's a fast-paced, stressful job.

And tk, smoking is high among chefs for the same reason it's high among retail workers. It's a fast-paced, stressful job.
Not knowing much about percentages of smokers in retail compared to other industries, I guess it just seems like there is a higher proportion of chefs that smoke than there are in other industries, even those that are as high-paced and stressful. Not knowing any chefs personally and never having worked retail, I can't comment on those. But, I am good friends with a fair few ER docs and a good number of professional EMT's and firefighters, the proportion of smokers in those groups doesn't seem to be as high as I've observed on these shows for the chefs. There are some aspects of some of the jobs within my company that are also extremely high-stress, and at my job, it seems like the ones with the lowest-stress jobs are the smokers. Not that that really means much, of course. :)
I guess it also seems that there's a difference between fast-paced and stressful and can damage one of your biggest tools for your job (chef) and fast-paced and stressful and has no impact other than that meddling health thing (any job that doesn't involve a sense of smell or taste). It seems unusual...Maybe it's just a large percentage of those smokers get to TV shows. ;)

FYI, but I know some EMTs and firefighters - and they are about the last group of people I would expect to smoke cigarettes ;)
We have a lot of factory workers (long hours, some stress) and most smoke. I would say it's more the combination of a non-health related profession with long hours and stress.
thesloppy
08-12-2009, 05:01 PM
As a former cook and former smoker, smoking is a fantastic tool for getting yourself off the line for 15 minutes, and that might not translate to any other job, even with much higher stress levels, as you can't take a smoke break during a fire, or ER procedure, but you can take one during a dinner rush. That 15 minutes, outside in the nice fresh air (irony), away from everybody else in the GOTdamn restaurant that has been yelling at you for two hours, can seem like the best 15 minutes in the world.
Arles
08-12-2009, 05:07 PM
Yeah, I think it's the same logic for some of our factory workers. The breaks help chip away at a fairly monotonous and stressful job.
terpkristin
08-12-2009, 05:11 PM
Weird. Even amongst our "factory" workers, the prevalence doesn't seem as high.
Oh and I agree, ER docs and EMTs aren't exactly the demographic I would think of for smokers in general. ;)

The women have a pretty weak group. Ariel and Tennille are the only ones I like out of that group. I don't think Tennille would win, but I think she is a better team member than she is given credit for. Suzanne seems like she would run her mother over with a car if she had too to win.
DaddyTorgo
08-13-2009, 07:42 AM
Suzanne really fucked them over by trying to take charge of the whole thing. I think you could clearly see where Robert's past experience on the show helped him there though - he knew to trust in his team and try to draw on everyone in order to create that menu that perfectly matched what the lady and her husband wanted. And as a result of that the guys got to do their whole menu, which gave them a huge advantage as far as being comfortable with it.
Meanwhile Suzanne has Tennille who it seems could clearly do Southern-style cooking well, and instead she dictates and ends up with dishes that I'm sure were tasty but weren't the "comfort food" that the people wanted.
The women are really really weak.
Meanwhile Mike seems to be the clear favorite (which means he's due for some humbling I'd imagine).

Tenille to me is probably the most improved right now.
And I echo the earlier comments about Ariel being oddly attractive.
Suzanne, if she can learn leadership skills, I think would leap into the favorite role.
But yeah, the men's team definitely has that teamwork thing down.

So the new season is starting soon and they announced the cast.
Fox reveals the identites of 'Hell's Kitchen's seventh-season cast - Reality TV World - News, information, episode summaries, message boards, chat and games for unscripted television programs (http://realitytvworld.com/news/fox-reveals-identites-of-hell-kitchen-seventh-season-cast-10905.php)
Honestly, I'm not sure I'm going to watch this year. This show has gotten so scripted and obvious, it's not even worth watching for the fun parts anymore. Especially after reading about how Ramsay promised the Whistler's owners that they wouldn't get one of the idiots on the show, just one of the 2 or 3 "real" chefs (in response to calls he got after the first show last year where the owners were about to back out given what doofuses they all looked like)... it's like this show doesn't even pretend to have some semblance of reality. I mean, I guess it never did, but it seems like they are casting people without regard for whether it looks fake or not and upping the ante on idiots/hotheads. It's truly taken on a Jerry Springer feel - the first years, you felt like a lot of it was probably rigged, but it was new, funny, and there seemed to be something real about it, and then they just went for the straight acting and the same fights breaking out each episode and you felt insulted that they were even pretending these people were real.
Add in the fact that 99% of the judged challenges are rigged so that it comes down to the final person, dish, whatever - I can only suspend disbelief so far.
We haven't even started Top Chef Masters yet - it's sitting on the DVR - so I'll probably watch the first couple of these to get an idea of what morons are on the show, then watch a real cooking reality show.
Top Chef Masters is unwatchable. Top Chef rules, though.

It might have been, but we got behind watching other stuff and then I started reading the reviews/recaps about how (a) there were 2 brothers who were causing drama and pissing everyone off, and (b) it was painfully obvious from the start who the 3-4 best chefs were and who would end up in the finals. So that pretty much cinched it for me.
I prefer TCM because I really don't care about the drama and immaturity stuff. The worst season I saw was the one with Elan and Marcel (or Marcel vs. Everybody).

But it seems like Susur is a lot like Hubert was last season...even the worst stuff he has done they couldn't really find anything really wrong with...it just wasn't quite as good.
Jonathan Waxman is a dissapointment...I'm surprised they brought him back. I'm sure he's an amazing chef and everything, and everyone seems to love and respect him, but he just doesn't seem to have that competitive, inspirational spark.
I'd be very surprised if Susur doesn't make it to the final frankly.

Top Chef Masters this season has been a disappointment to me. They keep changing the rules, and instead of letting these masters cook, they're forcing them into silly challenges with even stupider judges. I especially liked the episode where the Real Housewives were doing the Quickfire juding with Gael Greene. Gael thought she'd like them but you could tell by the look on her face after they started talking that she couldn't believe she was in the same room with them.
And this past week's episode....BLEH.
TCM this season has been a big disappointment. Though I do have 2 observations:
1) Ludo whatever-the-hell-his-name-is needs to go away. I don't care if he's getting the "prick edit," he's a whiny baby tool and needs to go away. I have no desire to go to his restaurant just from seeing him on TV.
2) I can't tell if Rick Tramanto (sp?) got the prick edit, but if he didn't, he's also a bit of a prick. Not in the same class as Ludo, but surprisingly so.

Dola (double dola?),
Volt (Top Chef season 6 Bryan Voltaggio's restaurant) was amazing. My mom, my dad, and I got reservations for brunch. I've eaten at restaurants of some top-caliber chefs before, and this was even better than I could've hoped. In addition to food that was ridiculously tasty, the environment/ambiance were so laid back/unpretentious, it really added to the experience. We got to eat in the kitchen seating area, and Bryan was in the house, so I got to see him quite a few times. It struck me that the kitchen was really relaxed--there wasn't any yelling or anything, they all seemed to enjoy putting out good food.
I had the 3-course meal. Started with a "simple" mixed greens salad with shaved fennel, radishes, a variety of carrots (in variety of colors), and also got a bite of my mom's appetizer (chevre ravioli with mushroom cream sauce). I liked mine a lot, but I knew I was keeping it simple to start. My mom's ravioli was really flavorful, and unlike many cream sauces, didn't taste overly greasy or heavy.
My 2nd course was a strip loin with mushrooms over polenta served with a 63-degree egg over spinach. The meat almost melted in the mouth, and when combined with the jus and the polenta, was unbelievable. While I'm not usually a fan of poached or otherwise runny eggs, it worked very well with the spinach, and adding a bite of the meat just topped it off.
For the 3rd course, I went with the goat cheese cheesecake which was served with kumquats and ginger ice cream. While I'm not usually the biggest fan of goat cheese (even with my mom's ravioli), the sweetness in the ice cream and the tang of the kumquat just worked with it.
I can't wait to go back.

Usually they are the head chef and still have an executive chef over them. From what I researched, looks like all of the past winners (save for Christina) no longer work for the restaurants that they were awarded the prize for. A couple only last a few months or didn't even start at all.

I think we're done with this show. We didn't even finish this week's ep - we still had Deadliest Catch to watch and only 35 minutes to watch it, so we stopped HK with about 15 minutes left. I'm to the point where I don't believe a legit cook/chef would walk out of the show on the second ep. Just like last year, when that one guy started a bitch war with Gordon that got him canned, there's just no way those guys aren't plants. It's one thing to cast a majority of dimwitted dumbasses stupid enough to not realize they are just fodder for Ramsay and have no chance to win. It's another when they hire people just to stick around for an ep or two before they blow up in a fit of fake drama. Did that guy end up coming back, or is he gone? Either way, that whole thing was scripted, and it's getting old.
That and the fact that Ramsay ensures that nearly every challenge and service comes down to the bitter end before somone wins, and I think the shelf life on my willing suspension of disbelief has finally expired.

I still watch too, because it makes me laugh, but it really is the bottom of the barrel, and that's saying something for reality TV. Literally every shot and every second of the show comes off as either rehearsed or edited out of context, and it's somehow one of the sleaziest shows on TV, despite the setting and the cast.
Ksyrup
06-10-2010, 07:01 AM
They make some of the stupidest editing mistakes, too. Last year they didn't have enough footage of the person who got kicked off that episode getting yelled at, so they spliced in some footage from a previous session - only forgot that a person who left a month earlier was in the background cooking. They also spliced in some close-ups where they were obvious reenactments (one showing the guy with a cast on the wrong arm, and another showing an empty booth in the background in the middle of what was supposed to be dinner service).
And of course, Ramsay judges 90% of the challenges, so he just makes shit up as he goes to keep the teams even until - miraculously, every time - it comes down to the final taste test or whatever the challenge is.
Even if all that didn't bother me, I think I'd still be done with this season just so I didn't have to look at Maria anymore. She disturbs me.

I could sooooo cook on this show. All I need to do is master cooking scallops, risotto and halibut and I'm gold. Gold I tell you!
I still watch it since it is my one guilty pleasure as far as reality shows go.
You'd be fucked on the Beef Wellington.

I finally got around to watching the second show.. the guy who walked out was the one I figured would be the one who would.. it did look fake when he made the mashed potatoes like that.. my 14 year old could make mashed potatoes. :)
It still has me interested though, go figure.

This show is what it is. A scripted reality TV comedy/drama that eventually allows a semi-decent chef a chance at fame. But, it's still entertaining. Just understand that a dish that would be served in week 8 will be tossed in week 1 for more drama. Know that half the people there have no chance at winning, but are planted train wreck (and gordon knows who they are).
All in all, it's solid summer entertainment if you don't think about it too much.

Including last night, we've now missed the last 3 weeks. And as far as I can tell, they've been running double episodes every week, so we've got around 5-6 hours to make up.
I think I'm done.

It's pretty ridiculous that they've essentially made this into a 2-hour show. I get the feeling they're just trying to get it over with as quickly as possible, but it seems like a sure way to alienate a good part of your audience, an audience that is already largely on shaky ground.

It showing up on the DVR again gave me the excuse to finally remove it from my scheduled recordings.

Speaking of Ramsay, I'm pretty sure I remember who this guy is - we watched the first season or two of this before losing interest in the disgustingly awful way they changed the BBC version to make sure it was Springerized enough for America.
Kitchen Nightmares chef/owner found dead (http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/kitchen_nightmares/2010_Sep_27_campania_owner_dead)
Campania owner Joseph Cerniglia, who appeared on an early episode of Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares, was found dead on Friday. His body “was found floating in the Hudson River, authorities said Sunday,” and “[t]he cause of death is under investigation, but ‘no criminality’ is suspected,” according to The Record (http://www.northjersey.com/food_dining/092610_NYPD_North_Jersey_restaurateur_found_dead_in_Hudson_River.html?c=y&page=1).
Cerniglia appeared on the show in its first season, in an episode that featured lots of fake editing (http://www.operationsports.com/realitytv/archives/kitchen_nightmares/2007_Dec_02_updates). But unlike some featured restaurants, his restaurant improved (http://www.operationsports.com/realitytv/archives/kitchen_nightmares/2007_Dec_02_updates) as a result of Ramsay’s attention and yelling.
In 2007, The Record profiled (http://www.northjersey.com/food_dining/kitchennightmares.html) the restaurant as it awaited the episode’s broadcast, and Cerniglia said the show helped his business but “I think the show dumbed me down a little bit. It sort of gives me chills on my spine when I think about it, the way it was edited. That’s what I gave, to get the exposure.”

In retrospect, this show never recovered from the one-two punch of Matt in Season 4 and Lacey in Season 5. They were the perfect characters on this show. After that, the show lost something and they kept trying to make it more extreme, but it just got stale.
Matt should have had his own show. I LOVED that guy.

In past seasons, it always seemed like there were 8-10 donkeys, 3 people that were good workers, but not management types and then 3 quality ones. This season, seems like they are all one big pile of shit. Maybe that will be the catch at the end, no one wins.

Pretty much everybody sucks this season. That one dude (Russel?) seems like the only serviceable excuse for a kitchen worker of any stripe, I have no idea who he is going to cook against in the final.
As an aside, I am continually amazed as the quality of this show continues to slide in concert with Ramsay's reputation and finances, that he is still able to pull very reputable and respected chefs to come prance around in front of these doofuses with him.

Yet another reason this show has fallen out of favor with me. I don't know anything about this chick, but my guess is this is no coincidence:
Hell’s Kitchen winner Holli gets cash prize after visa to work in London denied (http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/hells_kitchen_7/2010_Nov_22_holli_prize)
November 22, 2010, 5:59 PM <?xml:namespace prefix = fb ns = "http://www.facebook.com/2008/fbml" /><fb:like class=" fb_edge_widget_with_comment fb_iframe_widget" action="like" href="http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/hells_kitchen_7/2010_Nov_22_holli_prize" show_faces="false" layout="button_count"></fb:like>
Hell’s Kitchen 7 winner Holli Ugalde has received a cash prize instead of a job at Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy Grill in London after the production company failed to get her a work visa. She joins the list of the show’s winners who did not receive their announce prizes (http://www.operationsports.com/realitytv/archives/hells_kitchen_7/2010_Jun_14_prizes_ramsay).
Instead of working with Andy Cook at the new restaurant, Holly got cash. An ITV Studios America rep told the Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1332080/Hells-Kitchen-USA-winner-Holli-Ugalde-denied-job-Londons-Savoy-Grill.html#ixzz163U1fYD9) that “due to legal reasons Holli Ugalde will not be able to take up the chef position at the Savoy Grill. … Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to obtain a work visa for Holli. In accordance with the terms of her contract with ITV, Holli has been paid the cash prize instead.”
A Gordon Ramsay spokesperson said, “We were sorry to find out that Holli Ugalde can’t join the team. Holli is a great chef and it’s terrific that she’s doing so well in the US.”
