I guess I just don't get this? I understand it's unusual for it to get hot and all, but why not at least have the option to turn on the AC in a case like this week up there? Is there really a big cost difference to have an AC unit and Heater unit or are builders just being cheep?

Most of the homes in Oregon and Seattle (metro areas at least) were built in the early 1900s, and were designed for keeping the heat in. Air Conditioning also doesn't necessarily fit into the typical Pacific North Westerner's agenda.

80% of houses in Portland proper were built prior to 1940. Quite a few houses don't even have the wiring needed to support central air, or even a window unit.

My friend in Washington is dying. No air conditioner in his place. He said he took the dog and drove around for an hour yesterday because he was feeling so crummy inside.

On a side note, it's been a really mild Summer here in Chicago. Only 3 days in the 80's this month and none in the 90's. I can't remember a cooler Summer in my entire life.

I live in the military housing on Fort Lewis. There's no AC here and its pretty damn brutal. I also went looking for a couple big fans or an AC unit yesterday and after trips to 2 Targets, Sears, Walmart, and 2 other small stores I was told by my neighbor that there weren't any within at least 30 miles of here because she spent the day calling around asking.

I lived in San Antonio before living here and at least there every single house, apartment, and store had AC.

It's actually not been that bad here except for the last week or two. Normally, summers in North Carolina can be brutal affairs, but much of June was spent in the 80s. I think Charlotte set a record for latest 90-degree day in a season this year.

However, it's been trying to make up for it since mid-July with temps running 90-95 pretty much every day and humid on top of that. The worst thing about it is we seem to be in a pattern of erupting thunderstorms every day and the storms actually don't drain the atmosphere, just make the humidity worse. Of course, the AC in what was our family car broke down right about the time this heat started up. Guess who's driving it as a commuter car now until we get it fixed?

There you go, 100 is not anything new to the area according to that link. 100-103, no difference. Oh, and before you try to tell me how different it is there and blah blah blah.....I was born and raised in Washington, I know what it's like. It's been 85-90 and a humidity that won't break interspersed with thunderstorms for a couple days and predicted for a few more. (Seriously they're forecasting thunderstorms that usually only come at dinnertime at 7-8 am tomorrow.) I had lax games yesterday and today, with 12 players (2 subs) the first one and none tonight and I wouldn't trade this weather for what we were getting last month.

Heat's awesome and preferable to the alternative. Bring on more global warming.

Eh, have it your way, you are in hell it's so hot. It's been over 100 for most of the last two months here so I don't think it's a huge deal even on the days we set records. And come January I will be calling the locals pussies for complaining and making a big deal about the "freezing cold weather" that drops all the way to an amazing 30 degrees.
