View Full Version : Feelin' Blue: An NCAA/Madden 2010 Dynasty [Madden 10]

This is the second part of my NCAA/Madden joint dynasty. I will be controlling the Hapless Lions and attempting to fix them much like I am trying to fix Duke.
I haven't touched sliders and such but I'll edit that before I play a game as year one will strictly be simming.
Also I am using the most recent online rosters as I am not too concerned if Vick is playing or not TBH.

2009 Detroit Lions Depth Chart
QB
1. Matt Stafford (79)
2. Daunte Culpepper (72)
3. Drew Stanton (47)
Stafford is obviously the future here. He will start in the pre-season but Daunte will have a chance if he produces. I'd rather flip him for a pick though.
HB
1. Kevin Smith (80)
2. Maurice Morris (75)
3. Aaron Brown (64)
4. Avion Cason (60)
Smith is going to start but Morris will see some decent time as we plan on running a lot. Brown is going to make the roster but Cason is going to be fighting for a roster spot.
FB
1. Terrellle Smith (79)
2. Jon Bradley (68)
Smith is for sure the starter. At 246 lbs he is a big boy for Smith to run behind. Bradley is probably going to be cut as I cannot justify two FB.
WR
1. Calvin Johnson (92)
2. Bryant Johnson (72)
3. Dennis Northcutt (68)
4. Derrick Williams (68)
5. Keary Colbert (60)
6. Adam Jennings (54)
Megatron is a monster and will be our best player obviously. After that it's not very promising. Williams starts as our #4 WR but might take over for Northcutt with a good preseason.
TE
1. Brandon Pettigrew (80)
2. Casey Fitzsimmons (70)
3. Will Heller (66)
4. Dan Gronkowski (62)
Gronkowski is a rookie on the roster who I like and he will see PT in the preseason to try and make the team. Pettigrew is the future though.
OL
LT: Backus (77), Loper (67), Murtha (65)
LG: Jansen (77), Cook (70), Ramirez (6)
C: Raiola (80), Gandy (68), Jansen (74)
RG: Peterman (78), Fontoi (65), Jansen (77)
RT: Cherlius (75), Jansen (77), Loper (65)
Well, we're okay I guess. That OL will be serviceable at times but it needs some huge upgrades in the draft.
DL
LE: Avril (71), DeVries (71), Alama-Francis (64)
RE: White (82), DeVries (69), Alama-Francis (62)
DT: Jackson (76), Garby (72), Cohen (64), Hill (61), Fluellen (61)
This is the other weakness of the team. Our lines have to get better or else we're never going to come close to a winning record.
LB's
LOLB: Peterson (88), Dizon (61), Levy (56)
MLB: Foote (78), Dizon (63), Levy (58), Bing (48)
ROLB: Sims (87), Levy (56), Dizon (59)
The strength of our team, these guys have to produce if we want to win at least 5 games. After the starters though the depth is terrible and has to be addressed.
CB's
1. Henry (78)
2. Buchanon (76)
3. King (62)
4. Smith (60)
5. Robinson (57)
Again, our starters are okay but the depth is not good. We'll be looking to upgrade throughout the year and obviously in the offseason.
FS
1. Bullocks (73)
2. Hicks (53)
3. King (60)
Another position that needs fixing. Bullocks is serviceable but no depth. Common theme, eh?
SS
1. Delmas (76)
2. Pearson (61)
3. King (55)
Delmas is a savior on D. 76 as a rookie, he has good potential and could turn into a star. If he goes down though, pack it in in the secondary.
K
Hanson (95)
Our best player not Calvin
P
Harris (73)
He is solid.
KR
1. Northcutt (99)
2. Jennings (93)
Hey, we have a return game!
PR
1. Northcutt (99)
He has some use to us.

Preseason Week 1: Detroit vs Atlanta
Detroit 31 - Atlanta 31
Both of our QB's were amazing, but Stafford was just that much better. He was 8-9 for 72 yards and 2 TD, though Culpepper was 10-16 for 122 yards and 2 TD himself. Still, Stafford needs to really struggle to lose this job.
Calvin Johnson had 2 TD, both from Stafford. Loving that connection already, while Derrick Williams made his first point at becoming our #3 WR with 2 catches for 45 yards and a TD.
On D, DeVries had 2 sacks, White had 1.5 and Peterson had 1. Levy played well with 4 tackles, and ditto for Delmas who had 2 tackles himself in just a quarter of so of play.
A good start to the preseason.

Preseason Week 2: Detroit @ Cleveland
Cleveland 16 - Detroit 10
Stafford was 7-9 for 57 yards with no TD or INT while Culpepper was 8 for 13 for 68 yards with a TD. Once again, edge Stafford, who did his damage vs the first team.
Calvin had 4 grabs for 31 yards, and Pettigrew had 2 for 18. Nothing else there of note.
Avril and Darby added a sack each while Peterson and Pearson each had INT's. Dizon helped himself with 7 tackles, while Delmas had 5 tackles with 3 assists.
Offense was lacking but the defense looked solid.

Preseason Week 3: Detroit vs Indianapolis
Detroit 37 - Indy 7
Stafford in a full half struggled but still showed his flashes of brilliance as he was 12-23 for 133 yards with a TD and 2 INT. Culpepper was 8-14 for 177 yards with a TD and 2 INT himself. The job has officially been won by Stafford.
Kevin Smith had 2 rushing TD, though he only had 32 yards on 16 carries which is is sad.
Calvin had 2 more TD, with 6 grabs for 77 yards. Williams may have clnched the #3 gig with 4 catches for 86 yards while Pettigrew was good with 5 for 47.
On D, Cohen, Devries, Darby and Jackson all had a sack, while Hicks, Dizon, Delmas, Buchanon and Peterson each had an INT. Talk about a sick day on D. Dizon also had 6 tackles with 2 assists. He has really manned up this preseason.
It should be noted two of the picks we had were off of Peyton, with the other 3 were off of Sorgi.

Lions trade Culpepper; Sign Frerotte
With Daunte Culpepper's days numbered, they sent the Veteran QB to the Niners who are in dire need of a QB for a 4th round pick. The deal appeased both sides, and then Detroit added vet QB Gus Frerotte who signed a 2 year deal to be Stafford's mentor and backup QB.

Preseason Week 4: Detroit @ Buffalo
Buffalo 25 - Detroit 14
Nothing of note to report. Griese and Stanton played, all the other starters were basically out. The guys who needed to shine did to an extent. Just your usual 4th preseason game.

New Orleans 24 - Detroit 17
The Matthew Stafford era began with him proving he deserved to be the #1 overall pick. Despite being sacked an astounding 8 times, Stafford was 20/37 for 273 yards with 2 TD - 1 INT. He showed great poise in a crumbling pocket and was never rattled, but he couldn't do it himself, and the Lions paid for it.
Rookie Derrick Williams, who took over for Bryant Johnson who tore his petella and is now out for the season, had 5 grabs for 93 yards and a TD, and Calvin Johnson, with two DB's on him every play, still managed 3 grabs for 49 yards and a score.
Rookie Louis Delmas was the Lions defensive player of the game, with 9 tackles and an INT in his first game. Outside of him, and a sacks from Grady Jackson and Jared Devries, the defense didn't do much else of note.
The Lions must now regroup as they face the Vikings in their home opener in week 2.

Detroit 15 - Minnesota 3
Another game for Matthew Stafford, another impressive day, and this time, his first career NFL win! Stafford was 21/38 for 300 yards with 1 TD - 1 INT to lead Detroit in a spirited defensive effort over the Vikings.
Calvin Johnson caught 7 balls for 87 yards and a 4th quarter TD, while Derrick Williams had another huge night as the #3 WR with 4 catches for 97 yards to give Stafford some big weapons to use en route to his first 300 yard game.
The OL was much improved today as well, allowing the vaunted Vikings DL to just 1 sack, which was from Kevin Williams.
On the defensive end, the Lions were all over Tavaris Jackson, who completed just 11 balls for only 61 yards. Eric King, Louis Delmas and Larry Foote all had picks for the Lions, but the real hero was Cliff Avril who had 5 tackles and 2 sacks. Leonard Cohen and Daniel Bullocks would also chime in with sacks for D.
The Lions were not able to do much with AP between the 20's as he had 133 yards, but inside the red zone the Lions D was great as AP was held up and Jackson couldn't get the ball in through the air.
Quite a huge win for the team.

Matthew Stafford may as well get his Rookie of the Year trophy tomorrow because he has become a monster. Vs a solid Skins defense Stafford was electric, going 25/38 for 425 yards with 4 TD and no INT's!
While the Skins were able to contain the Lions run game, holding them to just 44 total yards on the ground, Stafford picked apart the Skins in impressive fashion, with Calvin Johnson catching 9 balls for 165 yards and a score. Recently acquired Ike Hilliard had 5 grabs for 45 yards and a score, while Keary Colbert came in because of injuries with 4 grabs for 49 yards and 2 TD. Also of note was Brandon Pettigrew catching 3 balls for 90 yards.
Meanwhile Louis Delmas might be getting a Defensive Rookie of the Year trophy if he keeps this up. He had 3 tackles and a sack, while Grady Jackson also added a sack and Cliff Avril had half of a sack himself.
Just an all around great game for the Lions.

Chicago 9 - Detroit 6 (OT)
Stafford took a step down today, though it was rainy, sloppy day in Chicago and the Bears D brought it's A game. Stafford was 17/26 for 166 yards and an INT. Just not his best work but it's too be expected from a rookie QB.
Kevin Smith carried 21 times for 60 yards, but the Bears keyed in on the run and was able to keep Smith in check.
As usual, Calvin Johnson was solid with 4 grabs for 73 yards as he looks to have his first Pro Bowl invite at seasons end. Outside of Calvin though no other receiver did much and it came back to bite them.
On D Jordon Dizon had his best game as a pro with 14 tackles, while Delmas had 9 tackles with 4 assists. Meanwhile Devries, Darby and Sims each had sacks, but the Bears were able to do just enough to get into FG range in OT and pull it out.

Pittsburgh 31 - Detroit 13
Welcome to the NFL Matthew Stafford. The Steelers held him to 146 yards, sacking him 4 times and picking him off once in the 31-13 route. Kevin Smith had a little more luck, with 15 carries for 53 yards but we were down early and had to throw too much.
Calvin Johnson was solid again with 5 grabs for 70 yards but couldn't make the big play when we needed it. Pettigrew had 2 catches for 37 yards. Together they were the only two players with multiple catches.
On Defense Louis Delmas continues to impress with 5 solo tackles, 2 assists and an INT, and Jordon Dizon had 8 solo tackles with 2 assists replacing Larry Foote who is out for the year with a fractured elbow.

Green Bay 31 - Detroit 10
Matthew Stafford did what he could today but it wasn't enough as Green Bay beat Detroit easily, 31-10. Stafford was 15/36 for 212 yards with a TD, and Kevin Smith picked up 80 yards on 18 carries but the Lions couldn't punch the ball in when they needed to and they fall easily.
Calvin Johnson was held in check with 2 catches for 44 yards, though he did have a 24 yard TD grab. Derrick Williams showed his penchant for big plays with 1 grab for 43 yards, and Ike Hilliard was beyond solid with 5 grabs for 93 yards but once again we couldn't get scores when we needed them.
Jordon Dizon was solid in his first career start with 7 solo tackles and 3 assists, while Cliff Avril added a sack but beyond those two guys no one else did much of note.

Detroit 27 - St. Louis 24
Down 10 with 14 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, rookie QB Matthew Stafford engineered three scoring drives, leading to two Jason Hanson FG's and an Ike Hilliard TD to give the Lions a 27-24 win.
Stafford was efficient as he was 14/20 for 172 yards with 3 TD. Meanwhile Kevin Smith had 24 carries for 121 yards for his best effort of the season by far.
Calvin Johnson had 5 grabs for 86 yards on the day while Ike Hilliard had 4 grabs for 58 yards and 2 TD. Also scoring was Derrick Williams who had 1 catch for 6 yards, getting a TD on the play.
Meanwhile the defense registered 6 sacks, with 3 each from Dwayne White and Chuck Darby. Ernie Sims would lead the team with 6 tackles plus an assist, and Louis Delmas added 5 solo tackles and 2 assist of his own.

Detroit 22 - Seattle 14
It was a brutal, bloody battle in Seattle that saw 5 QB's see action due to a slew of injuries. Matthew Safford battled, going 13/20 for 140 yards with 2 TD - 1 INT. He did end up getting injured for a quarter but came back to complete two second half TD passes and clinch the win for Detroit.
Seattle meanwhile lost Hasselbeck with a concussion for 2 weeks and Seneca Wallace for the season with a broken tailbone, leaving their 3rd QB in for the fourth quarter which was doomsday for them.
Kevin Smith was decent with 62 yards on 19 carries, but nothing special there.
Calvin Johnson was held to 2 catches, but he gained 82 yards on those catches, including a 43 yard TD grab. Ike Hilliard also scored a TD.
On defense Louis Delmas had 10 solo tackles, and Jordon Dizon also had 10 solo tackles before going out for the season with a torn tricep. Ernie Sims was the MVP of the game though with 4 tackles, 2 sacks and an INT. Dwayne White and Cliff Avril would also garner sacks for the Lions.

Minnesota 16 - Detroit 10
Matthew Stafford had his worse game as an NFL QB going just 10/21 for 123 yards with 2 INT vs a stingy Vikes D who finally showed up after being beaten around all year.
Kevin Smith moved the ball on the ground with his best game by far, gaining 123 yards on just 14 carries. Maurice Morris would also run for 12 yards and a score when he spelled Smith.
Despite just 123 yards from Stafford, Calvin Johnson had 5 grabs for 93 yards. Too bad no one else could do anything.
On defense, rookie DeAndre Levy who is playing a lot at all 3 positions had 11 tackles, 4 assists, 2 TFL and a sack. Sims, Devries and White would also add sacks on the day. Rookie Louis Delmas would add 6 solo tackles as he helped contain AP somewhat. Peterson did manage a score in the air though but was held under 100 total yards.

Identical to the Vikes game, our D plays well but we can't score when we need a TD. Stafford plays much better going 15/23 for 150 yards, and a TD.
Kevin Smith had 20 carries for 72 yards but no scores yet again. We have to find away to get him to punch it in because he's running well as of late.
Calvin Johnson was held to just 1 catch for 1 yard but that was a TD grab he had in the back of the endzone. If he can't get loose we're totally screwed though as today surely indicated.
Dwayne White had 2 sacks, while Bullocks and Avril also brought down Brady Quinn, and Anthony Henry had our first INT in a few games, but it was all for naught today. One good note though was rookie Ellerbe had 10 tackles and 3 assists. He just might be an asset yet.

The big news coming out of this game was that Aaron Rodgers partially tore his ACL and will be out for 11 weeks. Besides that, it was the same as usual for us. Stafford was 12/23 for 157 yards with 1 TD - 3 INT. Ever since I decided to run a bit more to save Stafford we have been bleh so it's time to change that going into this next game.
Calvin was held to 3 grabs for 27 yards, while Adam Jennings did manage a TD grab.
Dannell Ellerbe was solid again with 11 solo tackles and a TFL. Darby and Jackson each had a sack and Ernie Sims and Anthony Henry combined for a sack between them.

Matthew Stafford relished in being able to air it out today, going 20/35 for 283 yards with 1 TD - 1 INT, but unfortunately the defense finally bottomed out after playing well all year and gave up 38 to the hapless Bengals.
Calvin Johnson was great with 10 grabs for 125 yards but couldn't get in the endzone. Ike Hilliard however did score, as he had 5 grabs for 95 yards plus the touchdown.
Defensively the only thing of note was Ernie Sims who again was great with 6 solo tackles, 2 TFL, Sack and a FF.

We lose Matt Stafford for the remainder of the year with a Fractured Elbow and Gus Frerotte came in only to be sacked 6 times. Just an ugly, ugly game.
The Ravens D held Kevin Smith to 19 yards on 13 carries. That's how ugly it was.
Calvin did manage 5 grabs for 45 yards but everything else was all for naught.
On D Delmas had 5 solo stops, and Levey and Ellerbe each had 8 solo tackles but with Stafford out it's hard to even be excited about that.

Kevin Smith runs 30 times for just 72 yards, but he did enough to keep the chains moving we just couldn't do enough to score, a problem we have had all season long.
Calvin Johnson didn't miss a beat though with 6 catches for 105 yards and a TD as Frerotte just kept feeding him the ball as he should.
On D we sacked Warner 6 times, with Peterson notching 2, Cohen having 1.5, Henry and White having 1, and Ernie Sims getting a half sack.
Sims also managed 13 solo tackles with 3 assists and a TFL. Louis Delmas was also solid with 8 solo tackles and 2 assists.

The 49'ers D held us to under 125 yards of total offense as we're just a lost cause with Gus at QB. Case in point, they loaded the box and held Smith to 22 yards on 21 carries. Ugly.
Calvin managed to get 3 grabs for 52 yards and a TD but he was it. Only two other players had receptions, one was Pettigrew and the other was the FB Terrelle Smith.
Ellerbe had 12 tackles with 3 assists, and Sims continued his strong play with 9 solo tackles and 2 assists but that was it.

Preseason Week 1: Detroit Lions @ St. Louis Rams
Lions 24 - Rams 24
Stafford was 6/8 for 114 yards with an INT in his preseason debut. Troy Smith then went 8 for 17 for 150 yards with 2 TD and an INT.
Brandon Spikes had 6 tackles in his debut and Delmas had an INT. Also our D added 6 sacks on the day with rookie Dexter Davis getting one of them.
The only bad news was Spikes broke his Jaw and is out 3 weeks so he'll miss the rest of the preseason. Better now then once the games really start.

Preseason Week 2: Detroit @ Green Bay
Green Bay 20 - Detroit 13
Stafford sees just one series, going 1/2 for 1 yard before we let Smith finish out the game. Kevin Smith was the one who did all the damage with 140 yards on 12 carries which was huge. If he can get loose this year we'll be dangerous.
On D Dexter Davis had another sack, and Elam and Sims had INT's.
No new injuries, so this is a success.

Preseason Week 3: Carolina Panthers @ Detroit Lions
Carolina 28 - Detroit 14
Stafford was 4/9 in his quarter of work. He threw for 75 yards with no TD or no INT.
FA Gary Guyton had an astounding 16 tackles as he was the only MLB who saw time with Spikes out. He will be a critical backup at the position for sure.
Nothing else of note. No injuries, so it's all good.

Detroit 29 - Green Bay 22
It was a night of QB killings, as Stafford and Rodgers were both thrown around and neither man could get the time needed to make a throw.
Stafford was just 10/28 for 127 yards but had 2 TD - 1 INT, with passes to Pettigrew and Megatron for scores.
Kevin Smith was the offensive MVP however with 31 carries for 165 yards. He just kept gashing the Packers DL when we couldn't do anything else.
Meanwhile Calvin Johnson caught 5 balls for 73 yards with that TD, while Pettigrew had 3 grabs for 26 yards and a score.
On Defense we had 6 sacks, with 3 coming from Cliff Avril, who also had an INT. Also getting sacks were White, King and Sims. Meanwhile Brandon Spikes debut was solid with 4 solo tackles, 3 assists and 2 passes defended.
Our D was gashed in the air, giving up over 300 yards, but we held GB to 5 FG's and limited them to just one TD which was a 65 yard run from Ryan Grant.
A good way to start off the season.

Dallas 35 - Detroit 20
Dallas caught a break when Stafford was knocked out of the game in the 2nd quarter, after starting 12/17 for 136 yards and a TD. The injury was not serious and he'll be back for week 3 vs Washington, but it ruined our momentum and then Romo came in and threw 3 TD passes in the 2nd quarter to put it out of reach.
Kevin Smith was solid again with 13 carries for 75 yards, but once we got down big we couldn't do anything but throw and it hurt his final stats.
Calvin Johnson had another huge game though, hauling in 7 catches for 137 yards and 2 TD, while Pettigrew was again a big target for the QB's with 7 catches for 54 yards to keep the chains moving.
On D, Brandon Spikes lead the team with 9 solo tackles with 3 assists. Cliff Avril continued to be hot with 1.5 sacks and Julian Peterson added an INT but it wasn't nearly enough as Dallas rolls easily.

Detroit 30 - Washington 27

Kevin Smith had 59 yards on 14 carries including an 11 yard TD run, his first of the season.
Calvin Johnson was held without a TD but did catch 3 balls for 91 yards, while Bryant Johnson, filling in for a hurt Derrick Williams, had 4 grabs for 94 yards and a TD and Adam Jennings added his own TD.
MLB Brandon Spikes was a stud with 10 solo tackles, 4 assists and 2 TFL. Louis Delmas was also spectacular with 6 tackles, a TFL, a sack and an INT.

Detroit 47 - Chicago 27
We give up over 400 yards in the air but our D was huge when it needed to be, and even added fumble return for a TD from Julian Peterson and a pick six from Louis Delmas to give us an emphatic 20 point win over Chicago.
Stafford was brilliant going 20/34 for 303 yards with 2 TD - 1 INT on a day where the Bears D couldn't do a single thing.
Case in point, Kevin Smith carried 28 times for 132 yards and a TD. With the Bears on their heels it was just a matter of picking them apart and driving at will.
Brandon Pettigrew had a career day with 7 gravs for 141 yards and a score, while Calvin was solid as always with 7 catches for 84 yards and a TD.
On D Brandon Spikes had 5 solo tackles, 3 TFL and a sack, while Delmas had 3 tackles, an INT for a TD and a FR. Also getting sacks were Grady Jackson, who caused the fumble that Peterson returned for a TD and Chuck Darby.
A huge win sets us up at 3-1 with a game in Buffalo on deck.

Detroit 24 - Buffalo 14
Matthew Stafford slumped after a great game vs Chicago, going 24/41 for 215 yards with a TD and 3 INT, but the D buckled down and rookie Joe McKnight added a 75 yeard PR for a TD in the 4th to give us a big 24-14 win.
Kevin Smith also struggled, running 15 times for 39 yards, but he did manage to punch in a TD.
Calvin was good as usual with 8 grabs for 88 yards but no TD's. Meanwhile Brandon Pettigrew had another big game with 6 grabs for 61 yards as he continues to evolve into an elite TE.
On D, Chuck Darby had 2 sacks, and Sims and Peterson also brought down the QB. Peterson was an all around terror with 11 tackles and also adding an INT. Speaking of INT's, Delmas struck again with another INT and Brandon Spikes was solid with 9 solo tackles.

New York 16 - Detroit 10
Stafford bounced back slightly vs a relentless Giants pass rush, as he was 21/35 for 245 yards with a TD and an INT, but it wasn't nearly enough to give us the victory
Kevin Smith was held in check again running just 10 times for 27 yards against a filthy Giants D.
Meanwhile, Calvin was again outrageous but again kept out of the endzone. He finished with 8 grabs for 132 yards but no scores. Derrick Williams did manage to get a 7 yard TD grab though as he works his way back from injury.
On D, Delmas has another pick and Brandon Spikes adds his first career INT. Dewayne White also added 2 sacks but besides him there wasn't much else going on, though we did keep the Gmen to just 1 TD.
Also we learned Dominic Raiola is out for the year with a torn rotator cuff and Backus is out 3 weeks with a strained knee. Not good.

Detroit 27 - Miami 20
Matthew Stafford took the next step in his evolution with a great, efficient game vs the Fins. Stafford was 27/36 for 273 yards with 2 TD and no INT as he just picked apart the Fins D.
Kevin Smith was given much of a chance in the run game with 20 carries for 49 yards but he did score a TD.
Calvin Johnson was his usual steady self with 8 grabs for 61 yards and a TD, and Pettigrew kept on plugging along with 6 grabs for 61 yards and a TD. Also having a huge grab was Bryant Johnson with 4 catches for 81 yards.
Our D had six total sacks to bring the pain on Pennington. Cohen, Sims, Peterson and Avril had a sack each, while Dwayne White had 1.5 sacks and Spikes had the other half sack.
Also Louis Delmas was amazing again with yet another INT. This kid can flat out play.

St. Louis 31 - Detroit 7
Wow. The wheels just fell off in this one. Stafford was only 13/32 for 175 yards with a TD in a really miserable effort from him.
Kevin Smith ran 11 times for 42 yards but we were down big early and had to abandon the run.
Even Calvin was shut down with 3 grabs for 33 yards. Derrick Williams added a 30 yard grab for a TD but that was it for us. Just awful.
On D Spikes had 9 solo tackles and 4 assists, and Avril and Darby had a sack each but we couldn't stop Steven Jackson who ripped us for 184 yards on the ground.

Green Bay 27 - Detroit 14
Once again Matthew Stafford is held in check, going 13/32 for 138 yards with a TD and no INT. Green Bay was up 27-0 after 3 and we showed some strength battling back but it was far too late.
Kevin Smith ran 15 times for 51 yards with a TD.
Megatron had 7 grabs for 105 yards but couldn't find the endzone. Derrick Williams had 2 grabs for 13 yards with a TD.
Brandon Spikes was a machine on D with 13 solo tackles, an assist and 4 TFL. Darby, Jackson and Sims each had a sack, and Ernie Sims also added an INT but that was just not enough and we fall.

Detroit 52 - New York 27
This was close for the first half as Josh McCown who is playing for an injured Mark Sanchez was on fire, but then the D got to him with 5 second half sacks and it was no longer close.
Stafford was 12/23 for 229 yards with an astounding 5 TD, along with 2 INT.
Kevin Smith ran 19 times for 71 yards.
Calvin Johnson was great with 4 grabs for 121 yards and 2 TD, while Pettigrew had 5 grabs for 89 yards and 2 TD, and Bryant Johnson added 2 for 23 and a TD.
Outside of Stafford our MVP was easily Brandon Spikes who had 8 solo tackles, 4 assists, 5 TFL, 2 sacks, an INT and a FF that Cliff Avril scooped up and took in for 6. Also having sacks was Grady Jackson with 2, rookie Dexter Davis, Elam and Sims with 1 each. Elam also had an INT.
Just a resounding effort after two bad games.

Stafford was average today, going 17/33 for 176 yards with 2 TD and no INT. He needs to be more consistent if we're going to somehow sneak into the playoffs.
The Vikes D totally shut down Kevin Smith, holding him to 13 carries for just 30 yards.
Calvin continues to be uncoverable with 6 grabs for 98 yards and 2 TD but no one else had more then 19 yards receiving.
Spikes lead our D with 8 solo tackles and we had 5 sacks, with Dexter Davis, Eric King, Abram Elam, Dewayne White and Chuck Darby getting in on the action.

Detroit 34 - Philadelphia 10
Matthew Stafford showed amazing poise in a battle that could help determine an NFC Wildcard slot, as he was 22/36 for 255 yards with 3 TD - 1 INT. It helped supplement our run game which went AWOL again, as Smith was held to 39 yards on 12 carries.
Once again though, it was all Calvin Johnson, as he had 9 grabs for 120 yards with 2 TD. Brandon Pettigrew was also spectacular with 5 grabs for 72 yards and a TD.
On D Spikes had 9 solo tackles with an assist, Ernie Sims had a sack, and Louis Delmas had a pick 6 in the fourth quarter to put the game fully out of reach.
This was an absolutely huge game.

New England 29 - Detroit 19
Matthew Stafford went toe to toe with Tom Brady, going 28/39 for 359 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT, but Brady was just a tad better, throwing for 340 yards with 3 TD. The Pats D came up with stops when they needed them and we couldn't do much to slow them down.
For the 2nd time all season we had two 100 yard receivers, as Derrick Williams had 9 grabs for 128 yards, and Calvin Johnson brought in 7 grabs for 113 yards and a TD. Also scoring was Bryant Johnson.
On D, Spikes had 6 solo tackle,s 2 assists, 3 TFL and a sack, while Louis Delmas had 9 solo tackles and an INT. We just didn't get enough pressure on Brady to cause more havoc though and we fall the leagues best team by 10 as a result.

Ugly, ugly, ugly. Stafford was 17/41 for 315 yards with 2 TD and an INT. A lot of yards but it was all big plays as we got down in a hole early and couldn't claw our way out.
Calvin Johnson was held to 1 catch for 16 yards, but Derrick Williams had 4 for 83 and a TD and Dennis Northcutt had 2 for 40 and a TD.
Brandon Spikes added 10 solo tackles, 2 assists and a TFL, and Julian Peterson had a sack but that was it for us on D. Just terrible to get handled like this vs a really bad team.

Matthew Stafford is again solid, going 23/38 for 280 yards with 2 TD - 2 INT, just enough to give us our 8th win of the year and ensure us of at least a .500 season.
Kevin Smith finally gets off the snide, at least a little bit, with 19 carries for 72 yards, though it's still a far cry from his 100 yard games early in the year.
Calvin Johnson was just a machine today with his best game ever. 13 catches for 177 yards and 2 TD. He is just a flat out stud.
On D, we got to the QB often, as White had 3 sacks, Avril had 2 and Sims and Darby each had one. Sims also added an INT.

Stafford went down with an injury after throwing 2 picks, and though Calvin had 9 grabs for 147 yards, Troy Smith just couldn't get it down when we needed it.
Spikes finishes his rookie year with 9 tackles and 2 TFL. Meanwhile Sims, Peterson and Avril all get sacks, and Peterson and Bullocks also get INT's.
A bummer of a way to end the year but still, 8-8 is a huge improvement over last year and all our best players will just keep getting better.

Lions Draft Pick Review
DT Lawerene Marsh: 82 OV/A POT
- This kid is a stu who will start on our OL along side FA Ed Johnson from the get go. Our biggest hole has been our DL and Marsh is going to be a force there for years to come. That trade I made paid off dearly.
CB Jimmy Smith: 68 OV/B POT
- Not a good pick but the potential is there. He will be our #3 DB, though Henry and Buchanon are regressing rapidly. Still, for a third round pick this is good value.
LG Mark Boskovich: 64 OV/B POT
- A fourth rounder who will contribute in a year or so. I plan on giving him the entire preseason as a starter and then we'll take it from there. Our OL needs fixing but we need help now, still, this isn't too terrible.
CB Amari Spievey: 60 OV/C POT
- Spievey adds a lot to our return game but he is probably a 4th CB tops. Still, he will make our roster and we'll just go from there.
WR Dezmon Briscoe: 57 OV/C POT
- Briscoe is a big body at 6'3, 200 lbs and with Derrick Williams rapidly improving, he isn't going to be needed right away. Mainly Briscoe will play in a pinch and if he develops he develops. Worth a feeler in the 6th.
DT Stephen Paea: 54 OV/C POT
- Paea is only 287 lbs but he was available and worth the the pick in the 7th round. He will be our 5th DT and now all of a sudden we don't have one DT under 27 years old. This is a good, young group that should flourish in years to come.

Yep. Tampa has a lot of talent on D, and adding Lewis in the draft to go along with Mays and co is disgusting. But still no excuses on that one.

Bump? Im assuming 2nd round at worst?
Woops totally forgot this. Price was actually a 4th round pick to the Vikes. He is a 62 OV and right now is only the 3rd DT on the roster behind the Williams Wall.

Detroit 27 - Tampa Bay 7
We start the season in style with a thorough drubbing off the Bucs, the same team that helped keep us out of the playoffs last season with an upset in Detroit.
Stafford was 20/29 for 189 yards with 3 TD. He was efficient though the big plays evaded him for the most part, it didn't matter.
Kevin Smith ran 16 times for 52 yards. Not exactly amazing but all things considered a solid days work.
Calvin Johnson continues to evolve into the best WR in football as he caught 7 balls for 67 yards and he had all 3 touchdowns. Not really going to be able to argue that Stafford to Megatron is becoming the best QB - WR combo in football.
On the OL the only bad news was new LT Ciron Black allowed 3 sacks. That isn't going to cut it, but he is our best option there so I guess for now we tolerate it but let's hope it was first game jitters.
On D, we made up for those sacks by netting 8.5 sacks of our own which is just amazing. Ernie Sims had 3, Wilkerson, a FA pickup to add depth had 2, while Huff, Avril, Johnson and White all had 1. Actually White had 1.5 if we want to be specific.
Guyton and Spikes would lead the way with 7 solo tackles and an asisst, while rookie DT Lawrence Marsh had 2 solo tackles and 3 assists. His penetration the DL has really helped open things up.
Also of note was Daniel Bullocks had an INT.

Detroit 14 - Chicago 6
Matthew Stafford didn't have a very good game by the numbers, completing 15 of 31 for just 135 yards, but he does throw 2 TD with 0 INT, and we rely on a heavy dose of Kevin Smith to pick up the 14-6 win.
Kevin Smith stole the show, running 20 times for 133 yards, though he didn't find the endzone, he kept moving the sticks and wearing down the defense past the point of exhaustion.
Calvin Smith was solid again with 5 grabs for 50 yards and a TD, while Bryant Johnson added 4 for 25 with a TD. No one else did a whole lot but we didn't need it.
Also of note, no sacks allowed by the OL
Meanwhile our D kept getting in Cutler's face, getting 2 sacks from Cliff Avril, plus one each from Dexter Davis and Ed Johnson. Brandon Spikes would provide 11 solo tackles with 6 assists, and Peterson would add 8 solo tackles himself.

Atlanta 45 - Detroit 21
This years battle of Matt's was not a contest. Matt Ryan throws for 350 yards and an astounding 6 TD as the Falcons just flat out roll us in our first away game of the season.
Matthew Stafford was 16/31 for 220 yards with 2 TD - 2 INT in a losing effort.
Kevin Smith was held to 19 yards on just 11 carries. Talk about humbling.
Meanwhile Derrick Williams was our leading WR with 5 grabs for 98 yards and a TD, while Pettigrew had 2 for 34 yards and a TD. Calvin was held to just 3 grabs for 44 yards.
On D, Levy had a sack and Bullocks a pick, but that was our only big plays on D. Sims and Peterson lead the way with 8 solo tackles.

Detroit 30 - Kansas City 17
Matthew Stafford struggled to find consistency in the passing game, going only 17/37 for 214 yards, but he did find Megatron twice for TD's, while throwing one pick.
Thankfully for him Kevin Smith brought his A game as he carried 29 times for a career high 174 yards and 2 TD vs a very bad Chiefs defense. He just kept gashing the line and getting to the second level of defenders, routinely bowling them down in the process.
Calvin Johnson would haul in 6 balls for 96 yards and 2 TD, including a beautiful 61 yard bomb that Stafford faked off the CB and Calvin blew by the safety on.
Our D gave up a lot of yardage but managed to sack QB Alex Smith (Filling in for an injured Matt Cassell) six times, with Avril netting 2 sacks, Johnson, Peterson, Huff and Marsh also getting one each. Marsh's sack was his first of his career.
Brandon Spikes would lead us with 8 solo tackles and 2 assists, and Ernie Sims had 4 solo tackles, 3 assists, 2 TFL and an INT.
This was a nice road win even though it was against a weak team.

Detroit 14 - Carolina 9
Matthew Stafford goes 27/37 for 211 yards with 2 TD - 1 INT and the defense brings their best game in a long, long time, limiting Carolina to 3 Mason Crosby FG's to give us the big time 14-9 win.
Kevin Smith once again was stellar, carrying 17 times for 103 yards. He didn't score this week but averaging 6 yards a carry, he made his mark.
Calvin Johnson would haul in 7 balls for 93 yards but not score for the first time all year. Instead it was Brandon Pettigrew who had 5 grabs for 42 yards and 2 TD.
On the defensive side of things, Peterson and White both had sacks, and Peterson and Elam would lead the way with 6 solo tackles. No INT or anything but we just didn't give Carolina anything and we move to 4-1.

Green Bay 27 - Detroit 15
The Packers D held us to 5 FG, as Stafford was just 17/28 for 183 yards with no TD and no INT, but what is truly sad is we lost despite 224 yards on 20 carries from Kevin Smith, who also did not score. 224 yards from your RB and you lose? Unreal.
Calvin had 4 grabs for 61 yards to lead our receivers, but was held out of the endzone for the second straight game.
Meanwhile our D allowed Rodgers to throw for 4 TD and over 300 yards and we didn't get a pick for yet another game. The lack of turnovers is distressing. We did get 4 sacks, with 1 each from Johnson, Marsh, Sims and Peterson.
Delmas lead us with 11 solo tackles, while Spikes added 9 solo tackles himself.

Detroit 17 - Chicago 9
Matthew Stafford was solid as usual going 20/33 for 211 yards with 2 TD - 1 INT as he picked apart the Bears with short passes and found big plays when he needed them.
Kevin Smith forgot his Superman cape today running 16 times for 48 yards after three great games in a row but it's too be expected. He is still a top 10 back in the NFL.
Calvin got back in the endzone, catching 5 balls for 73 yards with that TD. Bryant Johnson would also score a TD and Pettigrew added 7 grabs for 58 yards.
Our D was once again great, though it again didn't force any turnovers which is disconcerting. Guyton had 10 solo tackles as Spikes missed some of the game with an injury but he is fine for next week. Sims would add 8 tackles and Avril added our only sack.
A good win to bounce back from the Packer loss.

Detroit 27 - Philadelphia 21
Stafford wasn't overly impressive at all, with 186 yards and a TD and an INT, but our D holds them to 5 FG so it doesn't quite matter.
Kevin Smith runs 10 times for 60 yards, and our FB Cory Jackson drives home a 1 yard TD for his first TD of the season.
Calvin had 5 grabs for 44 yards, while Pettigrew had 5 for 43 and a TD. He is quietly becoming one of the 5 or 6 premier TE's in the NFL.
Meanwhile our D breaks out with a 3 INT night, with one each from Jennings, Henry and Sims plus we get sacks from Ed Johnson and Henry. Delmas, Sims and Spikes would also all notch 9 solo tackles.
Also to note, our rookie DB Amari Spievey returned a kickoff 94 yards for a TD which was absolutely huge. That kid can play.

We decided to be more aggressive today, and Stafford responded going 17/26 for 159 yards and 2 TD in three quarters of work. We were up by 28 in the fourth when Troy Smith came in, only to go 7/10 for 96 yards a TD of his own. This was a thorough beating.
Kevin Smith struggled to run vs a stout Vikes DL, only gaining 36 yards on 17 carries, but it just didn't matter today.
Calvin was his usual steady self with 9 grabs for 80 yards and a TD. Pettigrew would add 3 grabs for 35 yards and a TD and Brandon London would have 2 grabs for 48 yards and a TD from Troy Smith.
On D, Ernie Sims had a sack, and Jennings and Spikes had INT. Jennings was actually a pick six. Delmas, Spikes and Peterson each had 8 solo stops.
Also Joe McKnight had a 59 yard PR for a TD. Our return game is just lethal.

Detroit 16 - New Orleans 7
Matthew Stafford overcomes a 3 INT night to get the 16-7 vs a Drew Brees-less Saints on Monday Night Football.
Stafford was 22/40 for 291 yards and a TD, as well as those 3 INT, but with Kellen Clemens running the Saints offense the INT's meant little as they just kept sputtering and giving us the ball right back.
Kevin Smith bounced back with 21 carries for 149 yards in his best game in a few weeks. He just shredded the Saints front seven.
Calvin Johnson had his best game of the season with 9 grabs for 161 yards and a TD. Also of note was Dez Briscoe catching 3 balls for 28 yards. Not bad for a rookie buried on the depth chart. Eight different Lions would catch passes today.
On D we had an astounding 8 sacks, with Avril, Johnson and White picking up 2 each, plus Spikes and Peterson grabbing one.
Rookie DB Jimmy Smith would add his first career INT and Peterson added another one to his belt as our D is slowly picking up their aggression and causing turnovers.
Spikes lead us in tackles with 11, with Delmas next at 7.

Matthew Stafford has his best game of the year, going 21/26 for 233 yards and 3 TD as we just bowl over the Chargers D en route to our first winning record in over a decade.
Kevin Smith was held to just 14 yards on 11 carries but the Chargers D couldn't handle our passing game and paid dearly for it.
Brandon Pettigrew was our leading receiver with 7 grabs for 102 yards and a TD. Calvin would add 4 grabs for 48 yards and a TD, and Bryant Johnson would also score en route to the win.
On D we didn't have any INT but we had 5 sacks, with Davis, Sims, Peterson, White and Marsh each grabbing one. Sims and Spikes would also each add 6 solo tackles.
This was by far our best win as we have feasted on bad teams but finally win one vs a good team.

Oakland 33 - Detroit 24
Matthew Stafford plays awfully, even though he threw for over 300 yards, and we lose to a bad Oakland team 33-24. Stafford was 19/47 for 314 yards with 1 TD - 2 INT. Just no consistency and we paid dearly.
Once again Kevin Smith was stuffed with 24 yards on 16 carries. Our OL is either wearing down, or Smith is, because that's two in a row with under 2 ypc. That won't cut it.
Calvin was his usual self, grabbing 8 for 125 and a TD. Derrick Williams had his first good game of the year with 4 for 78 and Brandon London had 2 for 44 but it wasn't enough.
Guyton and Bullocks had INT; Bullocks taking his back for a TD, and Avril had 1.5 sacks, but that was it on D. Spikes did have 10 solo tackles in the losing effort.

Denver 20 - Detroit 12
Stafford goes 17/38 for 123 yards and a TD which tells you all you need to know. We probably pushed it trying to throw more then it was working better pounding the rock, but live and learn.
Kevin Smith only rushes 11 times for 31 yards so expect things to change next week as we've lost two should wins in a row.
Calvin was totally dominated, grabbing 1 ball for 14 yards. Pettigrew had 5 for 28 and Williams had 4 for 22 with a TD. Just can't have that from your leading WR.
On D, White and Johnson had 2 sacks, and Wilkerson and Peterson each had a sack but we had no INT which sucks. Spikes lead the way with 10 solo tackles.

San Francisco 19 - Detroit 13
Ugh. This one was awful. All we need is one more win and we clinch a playoff spot but we just don't want it. Oh and of course, Brandon Spikes goes down for the year with a Torn Pec. We hadn't had a major injury all year and this happens. Just not good.
Stafford was 18/33 for 257 yards and a TD - INT. He needs to work on his accuracy because lately it has not been very good at all.
Smith does manage to gain 80 yards on 15 carries, so hopefully there will be more of that in the future. We need him badly now to control the clock for us.
Derrick Williams had the best game of any Lions WR all year with 8 grabs for 188 yards and a TD. Calvin only managed 2 for 28 so this was huge, but obviously not huge enough.
On D, Sims and Marsh get sacks and Delmas has 10 solo tackles but it isn't enough.
Just a terrible day.

Detroit 22 - Minnesota 14
We clinch at least the Wildcard with a big 22-14 win in Minnesota as Matthew Stafford leads us to 13 points in the 4th to give us the victory.
Stafford was 17/24 for 199 yards and 2 TD in the winning effort, coming back from a 1st quarter injury in the process. In his absence Troy Smith threw 2 picks so it was a must he return.
Calvin rebounded from some weak games to catch 8 balls for 100 yards and a TD while Dan Gronkowski would catch his first career TD as well.
On D, Avril had a sack, Jennings a pick and Ellerbe had 7 solo tackles. A very good all around defensive effort.
We're now tied with Chicago at 10-5. Should we win next week I do believe we win the North because of the tiebreakers. So Chicago's only hope is a win and we lose.

#22 - RG Trevor Robinson - 79/A: He will start at RG from the get go. We now have a young OL with Black/Murtha/Raiola/Robinson/Cherilus. This should be a great pick for us.
#54 - DE Justin Chaisson - 72/B: He will be backing up Cliff Avril, as our now 3rd year DE Dexter Davis will start at LE. Chaisson was a good pick where we got him, and should turn into a steal.
#97 - HB Stephfon Green - 65/B: We traded down from our 3rd rounder to Cleveland for their 4th and 5th, we also gave up a 7th. Green is a balanced back who is as good as Aaron Brown, who we let go, with better potential, and he is cheaper. This was a solid pick here.
#118 - CB Jeremy Brown: 62/B. The potential for Brown is amazing for where he was picked. He will start off as our 5th DB, behind Washington, Henry and Smith. He will battle with Spievey for the 4th DB duties but we have some good young players here, but nothing special yet.
#129 - WR Jonathan Baldwin: 60/C. We needed a WR and I wasn't going to sign one when we have Calvin and Williams. Baldwin is 6'5" which is mainly why I took him. I suspect he'll be a good red zone thread in the future but for now he is our 4th WR.
#150 - RG Jaymes Brooks: Was cut after signing. Busted pick.
#167 - ROLB Alex Hrebec: Was cut after signing. Busted pick.
#182 - FS Clint Floyd: Was cut after signing. Busted pick.
#186 - K Philip Welch: Was cut after signing. Busted pick.

Week 1: Detroit (0-0) @ Minnesota (0-0)
Minnesota 24 - Detroit 19
Stafford was 12/19 for 121 yards before leaving the game with a minor injury. Troy Smith would then go just 3/13 for 38 yards and our O would not do anything the rest of the game.
Kevin Smith ran 14 times for 70 yards and a TD.
Calvin just had 3 grabs for 29 yards but that is too be expected when Smith comes in like that.
Spikes would go down with injury but not miss any long term time, and in his place Guyton had an astounding 17 solo tackles. Ed Johnson would have 2 sacks and Dexter Davis had 1.5 and Delmas had a pick.
That said it just was not enough.

Stafford was 21/42 for 241 yards with 2 TD - 1 INT in what has to be considered an average to above average game for him. He did enough to win but it wasn't his best work.
Kevin Smith ran just 8 times for 32 yards but he did score a TD.
Calvin rebounds from a bad week with 8 grabs for 67 yards and 2 TD. Pettigrew was also big with 4 catches for 69 yards.
Spikes had 9 solo tackles to lead our D on that front, while we managed 8.5 sacks on the Jags, with Delmas having 2, Avril having 2.5, and Bullocks, Sims and Davis all notching one. Delmas would also add an INT.
The one bad spot was Ciron Black has broken his hand and will be out 9 weeks.

Week 3: Detroit Lions (1-1) vs San Francisco 49'ers (1-1)
Detroit 27 - San Francisco 21
Matt Stafford goes 26/40 for 293 yards with 3 TD - 1 INT as he bounces back nicely from a just okay game last week.
Pettigrew had 8 grabs for 57 yards and 2 TD as he is turning into a quite a safety valve for Stafford. Calvin would have 7 grabs for 84 yards and Derrick Williams had 3 for 44 and a TD. The one bad thing was Dez Briscoe broke his leg and will miss the rest of the year.
On D, Spikes lead all Lions with 9 solo tackles and 4 assists. Ernie Sims would add a sack but no one would pick a pass off on our D.
Still, we move to 2-1 so no real complaints.

Week 4: Detroit Lions (2-1) vs Carolina Panthers (3-0)
Detroit 31 - Carolina 13
Stafford shows up on Monday Night Football and brings his A game with him, completing 23 of 41 for 271 yards with 3 TD and no INT. His completion % was not that good but he made plays and that's what we need.
Kevin Smith ran 15 times for 67 yards and a TD. He isn't getting the touches he did last year but he's been effective when he does get it.
Calvin would have 7 for 106 and a TD. Derrick Williams had 5 for 71 and a TD, and Kevin Smith added another TD through the air.
Spikes was again our leading tackler with 12 solo tackles, 5 assists, 2 TFL and a sack. Cohen, Davis and Marsh would also notch sacks. Daniel Bullocks would also have an INT.
A good win to take us into our bye.

Week 6: Detroit Lions (3-1) @ Green Bay Packers (2-2)
Green Bay 27 - Detroit 6
Matt Stafford leaves with a dislocated ankle, making him miss the next game as well, and we get rocked behind less then stellar play from Troy Smith.
Honestly besides 9 tackles, 3 assists with 4 TFL from Brandon Spikes no one did a damn thing in this game.
We'll have to adjust accordingly vs Chicago.
