The lines that jump out at me this week are
Navy at OSU. OSU -21.5
San Jose at USC. USC -34- Freshman QB worries me a bit, but they are a machine and are going to want to make a statement before going into OSU week 2.
Buffalo at UTEP. Buffalo +8. They may not win but they will keep it close.
LSU at Washington. LSU-17.5. Sadly my first game as a UW student will be a slaughter. I can't believe this line is only 17.5. UW loses by 35.

Only just started to look at a few of the games with teams I know fairly well. I'm taking OSU -5 1/2 against Georgia, I think. And I'm intrigued by that Oregon/Boise State game. I'd love to hear thoughts from the more experienced bettors on it.

I never did back in the day either. I did a little research and it sounds like they have fixed the issues around February of this year and now pay very well. They had an 18 month or so stretch that had a 40 business day wait if you were lucky.
I pretty much just make $25 and $50 bets, so it's not like they would end up having a reason not to pay me. I did hit 7 parts of a $10 8-team parlay once and missed the over/under on the 8th game by 2 points. It paid some ridiculous amount like $7,000.

It's a long season, but my first major bet is Minnesota -6.5 over Syracuse. The line has moved to -7 at most places.
Syracuse has a new coach, new system, and barely enough players to fill their roster after new head coach Doug Marrone dismissed 16 players from last year's team. Additionally, they are starting basketball player Greg Paulus at QB, who hasn't taken a snap in live action in four years.
I think there's good value with Minnesota, who lost a lot of public support with five consecutive losses to end the 2008 season. They have superior talent in this matchup, and I think they'll get the cover.

If Minnesota doesn't win this game by at least 10 it will bring serious question to if this team can accomplish what is expected of them this year. Looking at the Syracuse team is reminds me of the 2007 Minnesota team with the number of players lost and coming off a bad season with a new coach. Add to that the major question that is Paulus playing QB and Adam Weber should be able to go out and get you your money.

Well, I was totally wrong on Paulus, as he played a hell of a game, with Syracuse getting the cover.
I also lost on Penn State -27, after they scored 31 in the first half and didn't score in the second half. I did cash with Notre Dame -14, and Oklahoma State/Georgia under 62 is looking good late in the 4th quarter.

I know I'm biased, but 12.5 points seems like an awfully lot to give Miami in a series that hasn't had a final score of that margin since 2001, and you have to go all the way back to 1997 when FSU won by that much.

Anyone with a decent Rutgers-Cincy preview from a "betting" standpoint? I'm thinking of going with Rutgers (just to win- no points or anything) in ESPN's Streak for the Cash as they look like a pretty hefty favorite at anywhere from 4.5 to 6.5. Is there some reason I should stay away from the game?

09-07-2009, 02:50 PM
From what I've read, Cincy only has 1 starter back on a D that is switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4. Meanwhile, Rutgers is breaking in a new QB but has all 5 monster Olineman and 3 returning RB's. Cincy has studs returning at QB and WR. I like the OVER (47.5). So, I teased (6 pointer) with OVER 41.5 and Cincy +10.5. We shall see...

Cinci is breaking in 10 new starters on defense and Rutgers is breaking in a new Quarterback plus others at key positions.
Kelly is a better gameday coach then Schiano.

Yeah, I have a couple bets riding on Miami. I have Miami +6.5 in one and need UNDER 53.5 in another. I feel like this will be a sloppy, grind it out type game with too much speed on each defense for either offense to contend with. Only way it goes OVER is if there are a bunch of turnovers, which is pretty likely actually.

That's smart. So many underdog's have won outright in the NFL the last couple of seasons. What do you all think about Week 1 NFL lines? So far I really like the Seahawks (-8 or so) to cover against the Rams. Looks like Bulger is out and Boller will be starting. Qwest will be INSANE and the offense should be able to go up and down the field despite the Rams decent front 7.

Edit: Oh, and I already took Cincy. I'm with the crowd here on that one.
And then in college, I have no idea which way to go on that ND/Michigan game but might put some on USC against Ohio State, even though it's moved to 7 now. Don't know much about Toledo, but I have to think Colorado is better than they played last week, so I might go for a parlay on that and another game I know very little about, like North Carolina.

I would be worried about taking the Eagles and Vikings both as road favorites.
Cinci looks like a good bet, especially considering the Orton situation.
The USC game makes me nervous. Freshman QB, etc...
Toledo got smoked last week but I could see them getting fired up for this game. Big 12 opponent, home game, national TV. I can see an upset here. They lost 52-31 last week so I would be inclined to take the over 54 here. If you really like Colorado maybe tease them to +3 over 47
As for UNC, again a road favorite makes me nervous. Randy Etsall (sp?) is a great coach and will have his team ready at home.

Edsall. All sorts of problems at quarterback though. The starter Fraser is a ND transfer who was a big prospect out of PA but was just brutal last week against Ohio. He's thrown 9 INT's in 4 starts and the only time he really moved the offense at all last year was @ Rutgers and they still only managed to score 10 points.

Here's how I'm rolling tomorrow:
6-point teaser (3 team)
UW -14.5
Like UW to roll here versus Idaho. Seems like a trap game, however that is not the case. If the Huskies lose they set a Division 1 record for consecutive losses. Sark will be out to prove a point. Idaho will NOT be able to contain Locker. Factor in the home crowd and the Huskies should cover the 3 TD's.
Oregon -7
Nice bounce back game at home versus Purdue. I was impressed with the Ducks defense against Boise State, who will consistently put up 40 pts per game this season IMO. Blount is a big loss, however, the Ducks are not hurting for talent or athleticism. The Oline will decide this one and I think they will bring it.
Southern Cal -1
Just read this:
"The Trojans have won seven straight road openers -- six of them against big-six conference opponents. Average score: 43-12. The opponents: Colorado, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Hawaii, Arkansas, Nebraska, Virginia."
Barkley has been prepared for games like this since he was 5. I heard OSU has been preparing for USC all offseason, which is why they struggled with Navy. That said, no way the Trojans blow them out again but they should still win it late.

Nebraska -21 vs Ark St. These are the games Nebraska alway win big early on to make everyone think they are better than they really are.
BYU-18 @ tulane. Veteran QB Max Hall won't let them have a letdown. Need to show the country they are the real deal and didn't only win because BRadford was out.

What does everyone like tomorrow?
Jets @ Texans -5
Texans are a really tough home team (6-2 last two seasons I believe) and Mario Williams is one of the best pass rushing ends in the league. Think it's a lot to ask Sanchez to go into Houston and pull out a win. Not sold on Houston this year but do think their offense has a lot of underated pieces like Andre Johnson. Houston 20-10 win.
Bears @ Packers -3
I won't bet on this since I'm a Bears fan but I really like Green Bay in this one. They had a ton of injuries last season and should be solid with a healthy start. I think there will be teams that give Green Bay's secondary trouble, but don't think it'll be Chicago's. Rodgers looks to be one of the better QBs in the league and will have a rowdy home crowd behind him. Bears defense is heavily overated and will get abused by the passing game. Green Bay wins this one by pulling away late 27-20.

Given my success in picking games against the spread through the first 2 weeks, I considered jumping into the betting fray this week. Boy am I glad I didn't, as I would've been beat pretty considerably. The worst would have been the 49ers to win at +240, as I'd have gone from penthouse to outhouse in the blink of an eye.
Will probably lay some money down next week, however. I'm more of a pro football guy, but does anyone have suggestions regarding just betting individual games, doing small parlays, etc? Any and all advice would be great!
B & B
09-29-2009, 07:35 AM
After talking to dozens of bettors, it seems that its almost as hard to weigh the strength of the wager as it is to find winners themselves. Meaning, far too many people take the time to come up with the bets while giving little to no analysis on how much each bet should be.
There are no locks. There are no sure things. Even getting a bad line only increases your chances to win, but there are no certainties.
I dont make bets for fun or action. Sometimes the best choice is to not make one. At the same time, dont put too much stock into one bet. Flat bets are the best way to go. Establish a normal betting amount and stick to it. Does not matter if its $20, $50 or $500. A good rule of thumb to find that number is to imagine if you lost 10 consecutive bets. I.E. If you think that you are a $100 bettor, than imagine losing 100 X 10= 1000, plus another 100 in juice, so $1100. Ask yourself if you are comfortable losing that kind of dough. If not, than you are betting too much per game. In the end, if you can pick 53% or better (vig) than you will make money.
Dont dick around with teasers or parlays. If you do, then I strongly encourage you to keep accurate records of those bets for a week or two. Most people will find that they are losing money on those specific types of bets, especially in the long run (say a month)
Oh and always follow rule #1. Dont bet more than you can afford to lose.

I used to bet a lot of 4 team parlays. My favorite number is 3 so I would bet 3 dollar 6 team parlays of my best picks just to see how I did for the week. I hit 2 of them over 6 years. For shit and giggles I made up a 8 team parlay, but for only a dollar, it paid decent.
It seems I would go 7-1 or 6-2 or 3-5 for the week so I would hit parlays in bunches, this was college, I about killed myself trying to break even in the nfl. I used to watch every game. Make my own lines Saturday night before other lines came out. It was taking all the fun out of it so I quit. I barely enjoy watching my favorite teams now in college or pro. I don't condone parlays because of the odds but whatever works for you, you don't change. Maybe I just liked parlays because it was more challenging, I won on them but not as much.
I loved betting and took an approach that if I lost my starting bankroll I wouldn't be able to bet the rest of the year. I always started the year with 200. Bet 5 dollars on games on TV games just so I would watch them, and then 20, 30, 50 on other games. Bankroll management is the key. I did bet more on two or 3 games a year, but never anything that would take away most my profits. I never bet more than 20 on favorites that were more than 3 points, except for when the steelers were rolling and 7 points favorites over the browns a couple years ago at the end of the season when they won the superbowl. I think the score was 42 0. I was glad the line wasn't 7 1/2 because I wouldn't have bet as much. Maybe others have luck betting big favorites, but I don't. I guess that's why I posted this and rambled.

I try to never bet my teams, but ho the hell are the Giants only -9 against the
chiefs?
From Chad Millman: Big changes in Week 4 point spreads, including Jets-Saints - ESPN (http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4526109&name=millman_chad) (insider only)
Line moves: Giants opened at minus-10, currently minus-8
What that means: Wise guys are playing this one in the traditional way, going with home dogs getting lots of points.
Jimmy says: "We're still picking off high numbers because of how this season has gone. Favorites keep winning. But wise guys aren't buying it, and that is how the line moved. I think about $75,000 came into three different sports books on the Chiefs early in the week and knocked that line down. All the public money will be on the Giants, but they are playing their second road game in a row, and this one is at Arrowhead. The Chiefs may stink, but that is still a tough place to play."

I don't buy that argument ( it is actually the 3rd road game in a row).
Had they played a tough game against Tampa, ok, than maybe, but they had all their starters out by the 4th quarter and held Tampa to 86 TOTAL YARDS!

Straight bets are the only way to not lose your shirt certainly.
I like Pitt -7 @ the 'Ville on Friday night.
I should seriously just stick to the Big East and leave everything else alone.

Not that it means a whole lot, but I agree on every one of these. Since I know you're a Giants fan, it's hard for me to agree with you, Lathum. :p

Running your money through a shredder is a more viable investment then Clemson football.
It's good to know I'm not the only one who can lay a giant Saturday egg. I feel your pain.
I like NC State +3 a whole lot.

Wouldn't have been quiet so bad had Mich St kicked a field goal instead of running for a 24 yard TD on third down

Lost 3 parlays, but made out on the live betting from the Cowboys and Broncos game to come out ahead for the day.
As close as a guarantee there is; teased the Giants down to 3, and the Colts down to 4. Kinda pissed I didn't go bigger bc that seems as good as it gets, but hey, i'll take it.
Teased the Patriots to + 7 and the Falcons to - 6. Thoughts?

It's funny to look back 2 months ago and how wrong I was about the ACC stinking. Turns out comparing the ACC with 'stinking' is an insult to stinking.

I took the Pats in a ML bet at +120, so I'm with you on them... Skipping the Falcons game, though.

NC State says, "HI!!!" to all of those awesome teams at the top of the Big East.

The Sagarin conference rankings take offense too:

Yea, I didn't want to really make this bet at all, pretty much did it just for the sake of making a bet. I wanted the Pats on the ML too, but I was talked out of it.

The Big East ended up 31-9 out of conference (assuming Miami finishes off USF) and over .500 against BCS teams.
Clemson's disaster at USC is another feather in the ACC cap.

And back to gambling... great cover for us today. In the parking lot at UConn/Syracuse we put 300 on UConn -13.5. Up 11: 4th and 11 from the Cuse 40 with 2 minutes left, UConn throws a TD pass to cover. Syracuse later fumbles away another score and the Huskies win by 25 to cover 'easily'.

You really should tell the whole story here. The Big East has a grand total of 2 wins against BCS conference teams with winning records. If Stanford wins tonight, that number goes to one. I admit that one is a really nice win on the road at Oregon State.
And giving Miami the W, the Big East was 2-3 against the ACC. Combined record of the ACC teams the Big East beat: 6-15. Combined record of the three Big East teams the ACC beat: 22-11.
Now, clearly the ACC isn't the SEC this year or any year, but if the ACC is an insult to stinking, I'm not sure what sort of rancid stuff is coming out of your own back yard.
