Man slaps stranger’s crying kid
By KATIE LESLIE (
[email protected])
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A Gwinnett County (http://g.ajc.com/r/Cm/) man is in custody accused of slapping a stranger’s crying toddler in a Stone Mountain Wal-Mart on Monday.
The mother of the 2-year-old child told police that both were walking in the aisles of the Rockbridge Road store when Roger Stephens, 61, approached and said “if you don’t shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you,” according to a police report.
A few moments later, in another aisle, Stephens grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her across the face four or five times, according to the report.
Stephens then told the mom, “See, I told you I would shut her up,” according to the report.
A bystander held Stephens until store security came to assist, according to a WSB-TV report.
When police arrived, Stephens said that he slapped the child and that he apologized to the mother, according to the report.
Stephens was charged with felony cruelty to children and is being held at the Gwinnett County (http://g.ajc.com/r/Cm/) Detention Center without bond.
The 2-year-old victim sustained slight redness to the face, according to the report. There was no video footage in the area the incident took place, according to the report.

It shows how much our expectations have changed over just a few years that the article felt a need to include this.
Man Slaps Baby?! Where's the cell phone camera, people?!?!?

that's too old to be Jon. Also, c'mon guys...he wouldn't slap a baby. He has a kid of his own. Willing to bet he'd just cuss out the mother and then come on here and rant if anything.

I would assume that the kid stopped crying, but probably out of shock...

Apparently now? Was the race of the mother/child even mentioned?

I was wondering the same thing. Couldn't find anything about race in the article. Without the picture of the "slapper", I would not have even know his race.

I didn't see it mentioned either, but I can see why Ben thinks it's something that could come out:
Stone Mountain Wal-Mart
The slapper was almost certainly the minority in that Wal-mart.

Not being all that familiar with the Atlanta area (actually, Georgia in general), I will take your word for it. I wouldn't see race as an issue here in any case, it looks more like Luther is still pissed that his show was canceled in 1997.

95% of FOFC isn't going to know that so why does it even have to be brought up (the race side) when it isn't mentioned at all in the article?

Well, I'm not saying it's an issue. I'm just trying to show where Ben may have been coming from. In fact, I'd be surprised if the person was of a different race and the article didn't reference it. There's not many journalists these days that would pass up a chance to inflame racial tensions.

No, I mean, why have both race -and- ethnicity there? Wouldn't one of those categories suffice?

Izulde, I was thinking Black and Hispanic versus White and Hispanic. That seems to be the most obvious one...

Yes, that's my take as well. I deal with data at a college, and we have both Black and White ethnicities with Hispanic or non-Hispanic as sub values.

Jiminy f'n Christmas, that may be about the most offensive thing anybody has said to me here in my whole tenure. My disposition resembles his physical appearance often enough but at least to this point my looks haven't gone downhill that far. Then again he's also 19 years old than me so with so more time & mileage on me who knows.
edit to add: I'd have had to do a helluva lot of aging in 5 years to get to that picture from me in the back row left of the picture in this post (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showpost.php?p=532783&postcount=48)
