When a pitcher has allowed one earned run in the current outing, using "1 ER" is far more pleasing to the eye and digestible than "ER." I know you have a policy or something, but you're doing this one wrong, honest. Thanks.

I never thought about that before, but that's completely messed up. How did it become a decimal value??

Certainly better than a 3 or 6 with a bar* over it.

Don't look at it as "thirds of an inning."

Look at it as "innings pitched" followed by "outs recorded."

Kind of like how, at its most literal, sure, $3.69 might be 3 and 69/100 dollars, but when you look at it from a currency standpoint, it's three dollars, six dimes and nine pennies.

It's not the best comparison, I grant, but it makes sense viewed through that lens instead of trying to ascribe the .1 and .2 to thirds of an inning (which is, I know, how we refer to it in speech).

What's wrong with using a fraction for 1/3 and 2/3?That's what Dutch news papers would use. As they don't post baseball box scores too often. Maybe it feels too European? ;)

Shouldn't the math teacher in you view those numbers as 3 and 2, respectively? :). But yeah, it's only "wrong" if you're thinking of math. It's not math, it's displaying stats.

4.1 is much easier to display than 4 1/3 especially when it's coming in a series of numbers. And 4-1 can be tough to see in a line of "L 3-7, 4-1 IP, 6 ER, 4 K."

edit: Sack's "outs" reasoning is better.

I kinda wish ESPN (and others) would display it as 4.3IP or 4.7IP, just because it would be easier for me when I input it into excel to do stats work for my fantasy league. When they do it as 4.1 or 4.2, I have to do some conversions.

Realistically though, it has been displayed as 4.1 or 4.2 for as long as I remember, so I doubt that will change.

Why not just have a hidden column next to your IP column and run a formula that converts it automatically? That way you can enter it and forget about it. Just have all your "formula" columns point at the hidden one rather than the showing one.

See, I disagree. It seems OK for ER, but I prefer something like "2-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBIs" over "2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBIs".

I think he's being specific to Earned Runs. I agree with you about your example, but simply 'ER' grates on my nerves.

I see your point, QuikSand, and stated a bit less indignantly (with a reasonable acceptance of the intended good will of the act) I'd probably be inclined to agree with you.

Just curious, why aren't you using a website? All of them are free now, so wouldn't that be easier?
