Are you familiar with 9.8 m/s²?

That's a lotta six-year-old splat if you don't have something to slow him down before you catch him.

Well it's not going to fall down immediately. The helium would slowly escape from a small hole...

Then use a giant ladder to catch him before he falls too far. Or a giant net to contain him?

Yeah it's perfectly legal most likely, just like a weather balloon, a very large weather balloon.

SackAttack
10-15-2009, 02:07 PM
Well it's not going to fall down immediately. The helium would slowly escape from a small hole...

The problem is, what are you going to use to get close enough that you're going to be able to hit the balloon with something of low enough caliber to only cause a leak?

He's moving something like 60mph, if I just heard the guy on the video correctly, and the balloon is going to be subject to changes in the wind. That's going to make it a challenge for any sniper (although I bet you there ain't a sniper worth his salt wouldn't be up for the challenge). Nothing you could get off the ground from the Air Force base in Fort Collins is going to be able to maintain altitude at that relatively slow speed, so you can't even just line something up behind the balloon to shoot it.

And even if you could, you'd cause more than just one hole.

I just don't see a good way you can shoot that balloon without splat.

It's really not even about what you catch him with.

Y'ever hit the water off a diving board in a belly flop?

Now increase that height from 60 feet to 6,000 feet. If you're falling unrestrained, bad shit happens.

But even above and beyond that, you have to be able to accurately predict where he's going to land within a reasonable size if you want the net to work, AND you're going to have to be able to set it up in such a way that the momentum of his impact doesn't just dash him against the ground anyway.

From CNN -

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/US/10/15/colorado.boy.balloon/art.balloon.kusa.jpg

Officials are trying to rescue a 6-year-old boy who climbed into a balloon-like experimental aircraft built by his parents and floated into the sky over eastern Colorado.

The aluminum-covered, dome-shaped balloon is 20 feet long and 5 feet high, Larimer County Sheriff's Office says.

Margie Martinez of the Weld County Sheriff's Office said a sibling saw the boy climb into the basket before the balloon took off. Since the door on the balloon was unlocked, Martinez said it's possible the boy had fallen out.

The balloon appeared to be a saucer-shaped, Mylar-coated helium balloon, not unlike a party balloon. The craft was drifting eastward, authorities said.

The helium balloon was tethered to the boy's family home in Fort Collins, the Larimer County Sheriff's Department said. The boy got into the craft Thursday morning and undid the rope anchoring it.

The aluminum-covered, dome-shaped balloon is 20 feet long and 5 feet high, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said. Watch the balloon float thousands of feet over Colorado »

"The structure at the bottom of the balloon that the boy is in is made of extremely thin plywood and won't withstand any kind of a crash at all," said Erik Nilsson, Larimer County Emergency Manager, according to CNN affiliate KMGH.

The Federal Aviation Administration is trying to track the aircraft on radar and has notified the Denver International Airport. Shortly after noon (2 p.m. ET), the balloon was sighted two miles south of Evans.

CNN meteorologist Chad Myers estimated the wind would keep the vessel moving at 30 mph. Authorities say the craft is about 7,000 feet above the ground.

Seriously, my money is on the older brother untying the ropes after the 6 y/o climbed in, went "oh shit" when it flew away like that, and went in and told his parents - little bro is flying away in the balloon - and then blamed it all on the kid to keep himself out of trouble.

I did something similar when I was around 3 years old. I rode my tricycle down to the pond in the trailer park, and got a little too close to the water, and the tricycle went in. It wasn't submerged, but the front wheel was under water. I just knew I was gonna get in trouble, so I ran and hid under a trailer. My mom went looking for me, saw the trike in the pond and freaked out. Before they finally found me, there were folks probing the pond with sticks, figuring I had drowned.

From someone on Twitter:

Not for nothing, "Falcon Heene" is a kick-ass fucking name. He's probably knifing bears right now.

That said, the theory that it might be an elaborate hoax seems...interesting. I hope that the kid is alright, no matter. I mean, I'd hate to waste state money, but they can try to recover that from the dad, so long as the kid is doing all right, because geez, just a scary scenario all around.

I think the whole story is unreal and these are bizarre if not comical elements to it. But I wouldn't be offended if someone told me this wasn't appropriate to joke about. But I think SD was right, the response was over the line. No reason to resort to name calling.

I wish CNN had more than just idle speculation but there does seem to be reason to believe that authorities knew or suspected the kids wasn't in there, either because he fell out or was never in it in the first place.

If this is a hoax they should publicly flog whoever is behind it (and make them pay for it, even if it is over 20 years to do so). Maybe if its the kids being stupid they just have some sort of fine, but you shouldn't abuse the efforts of several dozen people trying to save a kid for a cheap laugh or some sort of publicity stunt.

My issue with these sorts of boxings is that, in all honesty, we're pretty much self-policing at this point when it comes to everything besides questionable coverage of titties. You have an overreaction, an explanation, and an apology. Done and moved on. Two people bicker or a bunch gang up on another...eventually it either loses steam or you agree to disagree, and you move on.

To box someone over word choice is just ridiculous at this point of the board's life.

Everyone here agrees that rape is bad (I hope). But that's not the issue, it's whether society treats victims differently. So if you heard about a 40 year old woman being raped, and then a 5 year old girl being raped, you would have the same exact reaction to each?

Well, we have hate crime laws and affirmative action in our society. We have age of consent laws in our society. We have specific laws against child abuse, and some states even have elder abuse laws.

But yes, let's complain about people finding it in poor taste to joke about a kid dying WHILE the situation is unfolding.

It was a case of it being said in a thread where I was reading. I've said it repeatedly: I don't read every thread around here--not even close in OT. If someone reacts like that in other threads, just hit the little exclamation point icon thingy. I look at every post report. I must be living in an alternate reality, I could have sworn Lathum apologized.

I knew I recognized your name!!!! It was that other reality we were all temporarily boxed...err, squared, errr, placed into while said apology was offered.

I'll just quickly point out that I had nothing to do with this thread whatsoever until after it was over.

Nope. It was a case of it being said in a thread where I was reading. I've said it repeatedly: I don't read every thread around here--not even close in OT.

Right, because you think of this forum as being deluged with crap. We remember.

If someone reacts like that in other threads, just hit the little exclamation point icon thingy. I look at every post report. There will *always* be significant inconsistencies in modding a board of this size and activity level unless there's a full-time paid mod who can read every single thread.

Sounds exactly like what I said before...we're self-policed. No one immediately reported the post, definitely not before Lathum apologized for his mistake. We're all big boys, I don't know why it has to extend beyond "I messed up and overreacted, my bad."

I just find it amazing that a self-proclaimed rare reader of a forum he hates feels like he needs to step in and make someone pay for their mistake when the offender already owned up to it. I completely understand the need for a quick trigger when it comes to objectionable content, as we don't want to put our members at risk when it comes to browsing at work. But for someone flying off the handle and saying something mean before ultimately apologizing? I just don't get it.

Respectfully of course, coming from an OG forum member who has never given you or anyone else an ounce of trouble.

If I die while being in a box after being boxed, then you should be boxed too. In which case, you will die in the box and then I'll have to be re-boxed for requesting you to be boxed before I was boxed.

Haha, love CNN's sloppy writing on the article

"The 6-year-old Colorado boy who is believed to have set adrift a helium balloon Thursday, prompting ground and air searches, has been found alive, authorities said."

Then a few paragraphs later:

"Campanella said authorities are searching the neighborhood for the boy."

Did he escape again??

I heard the inside of the box in the attic was filled with votive candles and pictures of Eli Manning with halos above his head.

The parents set him lose to distract the police while they make a run for it.

You think the rape of an infant is the same as the rape of an adult? In your mind, you wouldn't consider one worse? Wouldn't demand more justice for one?

Justice is justice. No more, no less. Wanting more is because people are pissed off.

no no no no NO...see that would have been fair and equitable and taken into account the fact that Lathum apologized BEFORE ben even got to the thread, which would have prevented him from making yet another ill informed, uneducated, and irrational decision because someone had the temerity to say something mean to one of his posse.

Ahhhh gotcha. Is there list of the members of the Star Chamber?
