Cutting a troublemaker

I have a player on the team I'm coaching in TCY who has been suspended by the Syndicate for assaulting a female student in her dorm room. I am thinking seriously about sending a message by releasing him from his scholarship and cutting him from the program completely.

What effects will cutting the troublemaker have on my program, both positively and negatively, besides freeing up his scholarship?

My recollection is that the game says something about a player's popularity being the issue here -- that releasing a player who is popular could have a detrimental effect on the team, or words to that effect.
