I see it on Steam. It looks pretty sweet. Has anyone taken the plunge? There's no demo so i'm a bit leery...

I haven't because I've been busy with Dragon Age, but so far 56 users have given it an average of 8.2 on Gamespot. Once I beat Dragon Age twice, I might give it a go if the feedback continues to be positive.

yeah, i googled and saw the gamespot review. 8.2 is pretty good...i'm intrigued. the sale on it isn't huge though, so i don't see a need to decide tonight or anything

This is one we have been watching over at wargamers.com forum as well. Here is a good discussion with some impressions trickling in at the end. It sounds like if you are running windows 7 and vista 64 it is not working well at this point so as with me I am waiting to see if they patch it.
I would not trust the user reviews on gamespot. I read through both of them and neither sound like they're coming from someone whose opinion I'd particularly trust. Neither goes into any real detail. Both are bulleted lists of random parts of the game with no context or overall summary of gameplay and mechanics. And after only three days, I doubt either of those "reviews" are anything more than speculation after barely playing through the game once.

yeah in general i have a low opinion of those reviews, which is why i'm asking here...lol

Yeah, both text reviews aren't worth trusting. However, if they get up to thousands of people, which they usually do, and the consensus is a high score, I find that to be useful in deciding to take the plunge.
A demo would be helpful as well. If steam has a very good sale, I'll pick this up like I did Majesty 2. I think it was around $10 for Majesty 2
DaddyTorgo

yeah - i enjoy demos.
that being said...if it was down around $10 it'd be worth a flier too. but at anything over $20 i'm not really willing to take a flier on it.

DLing now. hopefully it will run decent on this old rig so i can grab it at the low price-point and then really dig into it when i get the new rig

Keep us posted on this -- I wouldn't mind getting into a nice RPG (if the playing style isn't too complicated -- as I get older, I have gotten much less patient with the learning curve of games).
DaddyTorgo
12-29-2009, 10:46 PM
yeah. it did something funny with the graphics earlier - i think cuz i alt-tabbed out of it so i'll have to give it a quick run-thru before bed. luckily i think i'm not really working tomorrow so i should be able to at least give initial impressions on the demo before the sale is done

fyi - i just looked on metacritic - 79 by reviewers, user score of 8.6
users seeming to say the reviewers scores are too low

dozed off on my sofa but just tried to fire it up again - seems it may be a lil too much for my graphics card in this laptop as i don't see "land" i just see blackness. almost like a fog-of-war thing but not.

Everything initially looked good on my end, but I am running into the same problem with my laptop. And when I cranked the resolution way down, it ran smoother, but I still had the black spots.

weird...i wonder if our video cards aren't up to snuff then, or if it's a problem with the demo somehow?

I keep getting errors whenever I try to play the game. Something about C++ Redistributable and not having permission.
Trying to Run As Admistrator and give full access and all that to see if that does it.

What are you running DT? I've Windows 7 64 bit
DaddyTorgo
12-30-2009, 09:42 PM
just XP
my initial take on the game is this...the in-battle stuff is very reminiscent of the Total War series (although there is magic your hero can use), but there's a whole "rpg" element on top of that, with "quests" you can go on and choices you have to make that will influence the path that is open to you (there's a whole 4-way thing with old faith vs. Christianity and tyrant vs. happy ruler), as well as influence the magic available to you and that type of thing. you can choose to help different factions against each other, that sort of thing.
there's also sort of text-based quests where you make choices about what to do.
i like it so far - i haven't gotten too involved with the battles and i want to do that more before deciding to buy, since i missed the big sale, but there are some differences (there are "victory points" on the map that you can take - if you take enough of them then you win the battle, some convey sort of "bonus abilities).

so I d/l the demo off Steam. Finally will start the intro video and whatnot... go to the Menu, click the Tutorial Quest, select my level... intro video for quest and then it crashes at the loading screen.
Windows tells me my video card's up to date.
So I'll try turning down the graphics and see if that works.

Heh, so much for that. Selected the lowest possible quality level and the fucking thing still crashed.

Finally got it to work by installing a demo from another site and unchecking all the crap that was giving me install errors before, which steam was nice enough to install for me.
Fun game, but the difficulty is just brutal and I was on the easiest setting. There's a lot of backtracking to be done in this game and I'm not entirely sure if some paths are winnable, especially for an auto-battle resolver for me.
I'll continue tinkering with the demo, though and think about buying on the next sale, especially if a patch comes out.

difficulty is tough even on easy. i've found so far that i can't beat those giants on auto-resolve with the size of my armies what it is.

Finished the tutorial chapter of the demo and it's intriguing enough that I'd buy it on sale. Not worth full price though, even if I love the King Arthur mythos.

I still keep waffling on it, but there's a smallish package on Steam of $43 for the game and two DLCs that add a handful or so of more units, heroes and artifacts to the game.
Package: King Arthur Pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2798/)

Currently $2.99 on Steam, $11.99 for the whole pack. Reading about lots of C++ runtime issues on Win7 64-bit that may be fixed by installing an updated MSVCRT DLL. Any comments from the group here playing it? Given the stability issues mentioned here and on the forums (I trust the folks here more), what are my odds?

Yeah, I might get it for that cheap. It and WoW can hold me over until Dragon Age 2 comes out next month. DA2 will definitely take every second of my gaming time.

Really enjoying this. I am fondly remembering my time with the original Shogun: Total War. This is so far a much better Total War than most of the ones that have come up lately. I feel like I actually have time to maneuver units and influence battles, rather than just getting everyone in the right place at the right time and watching everything work itself out over 60 seconds or so.
