Some friends and I are gonna be out in California in mid January, so we figured we would make the trip to Vegas for a weekend, about a 4 hr drive from what we're told. Gonna be getting in late Friday night and leaving Sunday evening, so we're not looking for anything special. I checked out expedia and found very reasonable rates for the Flamingo, Imperial, Tropicana, Circus Circus, Excalibur, Stratosphere, and the Sahara. Any recommendations?

I suppose our main goal is pretty much just to enjoy the nightlife. I'm really the only gambler out of the group, but with the trip being so short it's not top priority so I figure I'll just wing it on that part, which I'm sure won't be a problem.

From that group, I would stay at the Flamingo. Great location on the strip.

Keep in mind that it's been some years since I've been in Vegas, so my recollections won't be as fresh or as accurate as the others.

That said, the Imperial Palace is very stodgy and blah, but I loved their buffet 20 years ago. Not sure how it is now. I always liked Excalibur and Circus Circus, but that's only because I liked the medieval theme of Excalibur and I loved the midway games at Circus Circus.

But given that you guys are there to enjoy the nightlife, I suppose none of what I've just said helps at all. :) Oh well, I thought I'd toss it out there anyway.

+1 on the Flamingo. It may not be as popular as some of the newer hotels, but the rates are reasonable, and you are right in the middle of the strip within walking distance of alot of other casinos. We stayed there a couple of years ago and got a room with a view of the Belagio fountains, without having to pay the Belagio prices.

Of those listed... the Flamingo is the way to go.

Agree on the Flamingo or maybe Excalibur. You should stay on the strip for sure.

Excalibur just renovated many of their rooms. It's a great value for what you pay. Flamingo's rooms aren't as nice, but great location.

I really like the Imperial Palace. Cheap and real run of the mill gambling. You can always find a table and even on Saturday night they usually have lower limit tables. If you want to see high rollers you just go across the street to Ceaser's or the Bellegio, if you want a little bit better you can go next door to Harrah's, and if you want super lower you can go down the street to O'Sheas and Casino Royale. Some people are put off by their rooms but they always seemed like standard run of the mill rooms to me.

Staying in the middle of the strip has always worked for me. Makes it easier to get around.

Besides, 99% of your time should be spent NOT in your hotel room (unless you have a thing for hookers).

Personally after my last trip to Vegas, I can't recommend any hotel more than the Mirage.

I have stayed at Harrah's on the strip and it is nice. I also stayed at the Fremont in downtown, also very nice. Just depends what you are looking for. From the choices you listed, I would go with the Flamingo or Excalibur. Circus Circus tends to be more family/child oriented.

Looks like we're gonna go with the Flamingo. Seems to be the best option considering its location and what we're trying to do. Pretty much just need a room to lay our heads at night, besides that we don't plan on being at the hotel.

Then stay at the Imperial Palace. Cheapest great location hotel.
