View Full Version : So I lost my job today.

I found out today that my position has been eliminated. The site I was helping to promote and service has not taken off like the company had hoped, and I am no longer needed.
A short back story:
I moved to PA in June to take a new job in the IT industry. My wife and four children remained in Idaho so my son could finish this school year, with the goal of moving them all here this coming June (2010).
Well, I am now going to drive back to Idaho, probably will be leaving sometime this coming week. Yay for driving across country in December. On the positive side, I will now be home with my family for Christmas. My wife was happy that she could stay home with our kids. Looks like I will be staying home with them again (I was a stay at home dad last year while my wife was teaching). I need a math class to finish my degree (I have 117 credits, need 120 to graduate), so I will also be doing that soon.
This isn't a terrible thing that has happened, but it still feels like a punch in the gut. Corporate America can kiss my ass.

Sorry man.
This is why I laugh at people giving me crap about being disloyal. You're employer will use you as it sees fit. It's a two way street.

I have little respect for companies that fire employees a couple of weeks before Christmas. Hope you got a decent severance package.

Got to do it before Q1. The budget is important stuff.
It could be worse....you could also be a Wings fan...uhh oh:(
Seriously....sorry to hear this but it seems like you have found the positive in this negative.

A lot of these layoffs take place in the 4th quarter for fiscal reasons and it sucks. My only layoff ever took place December 23rd. Granted, I knew it was coming because the layoff schedule was announced 8 months before as they slowly moved accounts from our office. I also received a great severance, but still, the Holidays are a shitty time for this!
Best of luck man.

shit coulda been worse..Your whole family could have gone to Pa with you in June. At least you have some grounding in Idaho instead of becoming possible vagabonds right before christmas

Bad news, and bad timing.
Good Luck.
As for the timing. As Jeff061 stated above, this is the time of year a lot of companies adjust for their upcoming budgets. It does suck.

Sorry to hear about your job loss.
I echo the several people who said it's all budget/financials related. Most companies this year are having such a crappy year, that they don't mind taking the severance hit this year on their P&L rather than having to take it next year.

The fact that you didn't move your family there will hopefully be a small blessing which hopefully means you will find work again in Idaho soon. So just keep your head high because it may not be as bad as it feels right now.

Thanks for all the kind words, I know I get shit here for my perceived too many favorite teams (I should have never mentioned most of those teams, I don't really follow them anyway), but you guys are all cool and this place is like my home on the internet (without the porn :D).
My wife is beyond excited for me to come back home (she didn't really want to move in the first place), so I can't really complain about this too much. I get to see my kids for the first time since August, and that has been the only time I have seen them since I left Idaho in June.
I am mostly upset about my wife having to go back to work so I can finish school, I know how much it means to her to be a stay-at-home mom. Kinda hard to not feel like a failure at this point, but there are a lot of positives to come from it.
Thanks again everyone....:)

hey - as someone who gave you a lil bit of shit - i think there's a pretty decent divide on this board between the sports threads, the politics threads, and the "life" threads (for lack of a better term). I may go at it with Jon for example in the politics threads, but if he was to post a serious "life events" thread or something...my compassionate reaction would be genuine.

Take the time to stop in canton if you can. Lots of steelers greats there in the HOF. Harrisburgh to Canton is about 7 hours. Perfect midpoint if you're doing a two day trip.

Sorry to hear about the job Roma. If you need somewhere to crash in Illinois let me know. I would be happy to put you up for the night or if you just want to stop to chill and grab some dinner that works too. Us FOFC members need to stick together.
edit: Just saw Brad's post. We are a stones throw away from each other.

Thanks for the offers guys. My parents want me to stop and see them in Michigan on the way home, so I probably won't need to stop in Illinois.
Thanks again though!

As someone who is in the IT field.. every day my badge works at the Verizon campus, I'm elated.
Glad you get to spend Christmas with your family though.. as I get older, I really value spending holidays with my family.
I pray you land on your feet and hope better things are on the horizon.
