They need to fix the flex rules so games can be switched from 12 days prior to 6 days prior to the game.

Anyway, some decent games this week, headlined by Philly vs Denver and Baltimore vs Pittsburgh.

AFC WC picture can turn into a huge mess if Denver and Baltimore both lose this week, so there is some big intrigue at least.

Just an fyi for Steeler fans, I had this sent to me:

For the Steelers to make the playoffs...
1. Steelers must win out (VS Baltimore, @ Miami).
2. Jacksonville needs to lose to either New England or Cleveland (both on the road).
3. New York Jets need to lose to either Indianapolis (away) or Cincinnati (home).
4. Denver needs to lose to either Philadelphia (away) or Kansas City (home). OR Baltimore needs to lose @ Oakland in week 17.

So this week is huge, since all of the possible losses for competing teams occur this week.

Dallas has the tie-breaker over the Eagles at this point), Eagles have the tie-breaker over the Giants, the Giants have the tie-breaker over the Cowboys....

The Giants need the Eagles to 1) Win the division and 2) Beat the Cowboys in Week 17.

So it's really simple: Giants need to win out w/ the Eagles and Cowboys both winning next week and playing for the division in Week 17. OR, the Giants can go 1-1 IF the Cowboys go 0-2. But, if the Cowboys lose to the 'skins and the Eagles win against the Broncos, that would give them a 2 game lead on the Cowboys and they wouldn't be playing for anything in Week 17, unless Minn. loses in Week 16, in which case the Eagles would be playing for a 1st round bye, but then Minn. would be playing against the G-Men in Week 17 for that same first round bye. So if the Cowboys lose the 'skins, the G-Men would likely want the Eagles to lose to the Bronocs, that way.....

my head hurts....

DeToxRox

Giants just need to win out and either Dallas or GB lose and they're in. They have the tie breakers over both. If it came down to a Giant/Packer tie, it'd go down to the 4th tiebreaker which is opponents win % in games won, and the Packers have two good wins, Dallas and Baltimore. They have 2 vs DET, 2 vs CHI, STL, TB and CLE making up their other 7 wins.

Good look at the situations.

With the Giants holding tiebreakers over the Cowboys (head to head) and Packers (common games), New York still has a legitimate shot. Should either Dallas or Green Bay lose in Week 16, the Giants would control their own destiny heading to a potentially resting Minnesota in Week 17.

Obviously if the Bengals lose out they don't deserve to make the playoffs but as a worried Bengal fan what would the scenerio have to be for them to get eliminated from the playoffs completely? The only team I can see that would hold a tie breaker would be New York (this of course is assuming NY wins out by beating the Bengals in week 17). Are the Bengals basically in? It looks like they have pretty much guaranteed home game also unless they really screw it up!

(I wish having KC at home were a lock, but they should have steamrolled Oakland a few weeks ago)

After losing to the Raiders do the Broncos still have a realistic shot at the playoffs? I'm assuming Philly will beat them, and that puts them out, right?

DeToxRox
12-24-2009, 04:11 PM
NFL-Forecast put up their Playoff probability rankings going into week 16:

Green Bay 86.88 percent chance
Dallas 62.24
Giants 50.88

And in the AFC:

Two of these eight will advance, assuming that New England (98.9 percent) and Cincinnati (98.2) lock up berths
Baltimore 77.36
Denver 71.54
Jacksonville 16.22
Pittsburgh 14.14
Jets 9.98
Miami 8.86
Houston 3.02
Tennessee 1.72

As long as Denver wins week 17 vs KC they have a pretty good shot to get in.

Dola:

At 9-7 (with loss to Eagles and win over Chiefs), Denver would win tiebreaker with Dolphins (common games), Titans (conference record) and Texans (conference record); Denver would lose tiebreaker with Ravens (h2h), Jaguars (conference record), Jets (common games) and Steelers (h2h)

At 9-7 (with win over Eagles and loss to Chiefs), Denver would win tiebreaker with Titans (conference record); Denver would lose tiebreaker with Ravens (h2h), Jaguars (conference record), Dolphins (conference record), Jets (conference record) and Steelers (h2h). The Broncos tiebreaker with the Texans would be strength of victory (can't project right now).

Basically if the Broncos lose this week, you need to root for Baltimore over Pittsburgh, the Colts over the Jets and the Pats over the Jags, which are all very realistic in happening. If that happens, then Denver just has to beat KC next week and they're in.

And if Denver wins this week and loses to KC next week with a playoff birth on the line, well, then they don't deserve to go to the playoffs anyway.

So the Bengals are like a 50 to 1 shot to not make the playoffs? As a lifelong Bengal fan I think I would hedge $20 on that if it was offered in a casino. If any team could blow something like this it is them. (Obviously I think we should beat the Chiefs and also think the Ravens will probably lose to te Steelers anyways but $1000 insurance policy wouldn't be half bad)

The Giants need the Eagles to 1) Win the division and 2) Beat the Cowboys in Week 17.

Yep...that's what I have as the most realistic shot for the Giants. It would be great if Denver could beat them...but I dont see that happening. So...gotta hope Minnesota & Dallas both win this week to force the Dallas/Philly game to mean something...and ensure that Minnesota has nothing to gain by beating the Giants.

But if Denver can pull one off this week...things start to look very good for the Giants (well, assuming they can beat Carolina and Minnesota...which neither is a guarantee by a long shot).

Maroney gets involved in a scrum right at the goalline, ball pops out, Jaguars recover, they rule that they had no evidence that the ball crossed the plane on the challenge.

Carolina looking great again today, up 17-0 on the Giants. Troy Aikman argued in the first quarter that this season has been John Fox's best as a coach, keeping this team playing hard late in the year after being eliminated from the playoffs, making my head explode. Remember that Delhomme was never benched, he finally got hurt and put on IR, who knows what could have happened had he been benched in week 2!! Matt Moore may not be the QB of the future but we entered "anyone but Delhomme" territory a god damn long time ago.

Yup. He also had several games where they kept trying to throw when it was obvious they needed to run to win. That took way too long for them to get back to the run and stick with it. Of course, the way Moore has been throwing the ball the last two weeks, it shows that the real issue was giving Delhomme the huge extension and sticking with him even when it was obvious he was done.

Nice win by the Eagles.

Why did Denver not let them score with 53 seconds left and 2 timeouts? Realistically is was their only chance since Akers is clutch. NFL coaches have too much pride for their own good some times.

NFC has just gotten a bit crazy with 3 teams fighting for the three tops spots. Eagles are clicking while New Orleans and Minny are falling apart. Starting to look like the Vikings will get the #1 or #3 seed. Panthers defense(especially Peppers) is playing like they have a mission to end the season beating the entire league up.

You say this but I'm not sure the Eagles would have taken a score even if given to them. All of their plays were dives up the middle and Westbrook has already proven he'd go down to keep the clock running instead of scoring the TD. Doubt it would have mattered anyway

You say this but I'm not sure the Eagles would have taken a score even if given to them. All of their plays were dives up the middle and Westbrook has already proven he'd go down to keep the clock running instead of scoring the TD. Doubt it would have mattered anyway

Agreed, they had a first down to get at around the 3 yard line. If they get there and then just fall down, the game is definitely over after the FG try and it's even more of a chip shot. Letting them score is only a viable tactic in goal-to-go situations IMO.

From not playing to win to losing confidence in the coach, take your pick.

We got our answer if the Colts were going to go for it. If they don't win the SB, all of those wins won't mean much with one SB win to show for it. I can't imagine this move doesn't rub Manning the wrong way.

How did that undefeated season work out for the Patriots Super Bowl victory total?

Just too much random crap that can happen to be able to say "Resting is not the way to go" or "Resting is definitely the way to go". Sample size is just way too small.

Probably wouldnt have mattered that is why I said "realistically their only chance":) If the Eagles were smart enough to not take the sure TD than the result would have been the exact same as what happened. The first couple of plays it seemed the Eagles had gaining yardage in mind. One Bronco could just carry him into the end zone. I wonder how the ref would rule that:)

I think the bigger issue is that Caldwell may have lost a little respect from some of his team today. Its not often a team gets a chance to make history and he just kind of put it to the side. I'm not saying he is right or wrong but Im speculating their are players on that team that wanted the 16-0 regular season.

Brings an amusing picture to mind, seeing a back being carried towards the end zone and trying to get away so he can be "tackled"...

I have to say, the last tackle during that final kickoff was a vey smart tackle, though it wasn't mentioned. The Broncos were trying all the laterals and the tackler actually bear hugged the player with the ball pinning his arms and the ball to him. It seemed to keep him from being able to get another lateral off.

I don't doubt it, but there are always disagreements where some player is convinced he knows best.

"Man, we should be playing in System X, not System Y, because I'd get more sacks that way."

"Coach, I can play, I only have two broken bones and a shattered kneecap - I know I can get out there."

"We ought to be playing for an undefeated season."

Players are always going to want to play if given the chance and that's a good thing. But that's why they have a coach, to make decisions from a big picture perspective. Disagreements like this, I'm sure happen all the time. When the team is losing, they get magnified. When the team is winning, they get forgotten.

Too many words to say that I think this blows over, except for where the media talks about it forever, because that's what they do.

Wouldnt want to touch the Panthers right now. Playing like the best team in the NFL since Delhomme got hurt.If you ignore the loss to the Patriots, who now have the 2nd best point differential in the NFL.Why did Denver not let them score with 53 seconds left and 2 timeouts? Realistically is was their only chance since Akers is clutch. NFL coaches have too much pride for their own good some times.Hope Andy Reid called a pass for one of the 3 plays? :pI think the bigger issue is that Caldwell may have lost a little respect from some of his team today. Bill Belichick, I mean Jim Caldwell, has lost his team!!!I think this blows over, except for where the media talks about it forever, because that's what they do.Yup. The AFC is stocked with teams about as good as the Colts (Pats, Ravens, Chargers - even Houston, NYJ and Pittsburgh are peaking now if they make the playoffs) but any loss by the Colts will be spun by the media as turning on a week 16 decision instead of being beat by the other team.

Well, the Pats actually MADE the Super Bowl, rather than the typical Colts one-and-done when they are rested heading into the postseason. That's the bigger issue here; the Colts don't win many (any?) playoff games at all when they rest their players.

I wonder if some of the people criticizing the Colts today are the same ones who ripped the Pats a few years ago when they did go for the record. Seems like so many people said the patriots were foolish for trying to go for the record and it hurt their chances in the playoffs. Now suddenly that was the right move and the Colts are wrong? You all can't have it both ways you know.

I personally think these guys are professionals and they should try to win every game they can. Obviously if you have a playoff spot locked up, you don't need to senselessly play a guy with a hamstring injury that might re-aggravate it. The guys who are healthy though, they should keep playing. It is what they get paid for.

The issue to me is that he didn't do either. He left his starters in long enough to get injured and then pulled them halfway through the third with a small lead. It just doesn't make any sense. To me that says a weak coach who is trying to hedge his bets and not piss anybody off, and you can bet the players aren't stupid and they know that. That's why I think the Indy players looked so pissed off on the sideline, there was absolutely no way to justify making that decision at that time. If the starters were going to be pulled they should have been pulled after a couple of series or just not played at all.

Pretty badly actually. I'd much rather have the Bengals playing San Diego in the 2nd round of the playoffs than the Colts. The Bengals were not far off from winning out there a couple of weeks ago... no reason they couldn't put together a better game and pull off the upset.

Although the way they have been playing the last few weeks, they will be lucky to get past round 1.

could be an interesting scenario next week in the NFC playoff race. Green Bay plays Arizona and Philly plays Dallas, and depending on those results, they could be the first round playoff games as well. So do you go all out and try to win the game or put your backups in pretty early so as not to show your hand too much for the playoffs? Philly at least can still play for the #2 seed, and I guess the Cards still have a chance too depending on what Minnesota does tonight, so that might factor in.

As long as you have the chance to make history, you try. You owe it to the people who paid $100 a seat to come watch the game. You owe it to the people who spend $100 for the jersey of their favorite players.

Unless they plan to unleash Simpson as a surprise against the entire league in the playoffs, I can't see them opening the offense up. They have no ability to stretch the field right now. If they use Chad to do that and the safety doubles, they have to rely on Coles and Caldwell to get open underneath in the 8-20 range and I don't think they've shown an ability to do that. So they're stuck using Caldwell to try and stretch the field and hope that Coles and Johnson can get open which is definitely better odds. I have a hard time imagining a world where Simpson is not cut after this season. Quan Cosby has impressed me as a possession #4 type receiver in the last 2 games, and Simpson must REALLY not be ready if he hasn't been thrown out there as yet. I think Cosby sticks as the #4/5 receiver and they go after a speed guy to stretch the field in FA or the draft in the offseason.

Dallas and Philadelphia will play to win regardless. There is a huge difference in a home game and a probable #3 seed.

Arizona needs Minnesota to lose 2x and Dallas to win to get that 1st round bye so, they will know tonight. If Minnesota wins tonight, a Green Bay vs Arizona matchup in the 1st round is guaranteed (I believe) just not if it is a 3 v 6 or 4 v 5 matchup. If I'm Arizona, I'm trying to get that #3 spot potentially given the Saints and Vikings misteps in the last few weeks. If I'm the Packers, eh.. #5 spot or #6? I'd prefer the #5 spot just in case hell freezes over and it is a 5 v 6 matchup in the title game, but I don't think I'm going balls out to win it.

Pulling Manning and the other starters off at that juncture made absolutely no sense.

Clearly he didn't pull them because the Colts were way ahead or way behind. In fact, basically by pulling them at that point, they gave the game to the Jets, who took advantage of Painter's turnovers to come back and then put the game out of reach.

And I don't think he pulled them because they were getting knocked around. Manning in particular looked just fine in the pocket. Plus, if you're going to pull these guys to keep them from getting knocked around, why is Jeff Saturday still in there?

Just some really poor decision-making there and that, in particular, is what doesn't bode well for the playoffs.

I'm not sure they need someone to stretch it or not, check out the SD game stats. The leading receiver was Foschi, which opened things up on the outside for Chad Johnson as well. Their passing game was pretty good that game. I just hope they go down with guns blazing if need be.

Yes. If they lost to Kansas City with the ultra-conservative gameplan that was constantly leaving them in 3rd and 5+, I was going to be pretty pissed. As it is, I am still of the opinion that they are being far too conservative for their own good. I agree with having a strong running game, but I think they need to mix in more early down passing, and not be so stuck on running that they continue to pound it on 2nd and 15 when they have the inevitable 7 false start and holding penalties they seem to have every game.

The penalties kill them for sure. If they get rid of them (which I don't see how) then that's a huge plus going into the playoffs. You didn't even mention the delay of game penalties. I have never seen a team called for as many delays as they are.

Mission accomplished for the Colts if by that it is meant to divide the locker room and turn their fan base against the coach/team. After the game comments by Jeff Saturday and others made it clear they didn't like the decision to pull the starters and the local media/fans have been absolutely roasting the Colts.

Just what this team needed heading into the playoffs was to go from 14-0 to a team with a divided locker room and a disillusioned fan base.

Since 5/6 is so up in the air right now it's useless to know what's better from a 1st-round perspective. 2nd round I'd obviously prefer to play @SD than @Indy, but I think we're going to have to go through Indy regardless, so who cares if its put off until the AFCCG. The only way 3/4 matters for the AFCCG is if both us win first round and upset SD/Indy 2nd round - and that has maybe a 5% chance of happening.

Plus, losing to Houston wouldn't gift them a playoff spot, but could actually gift the Jets the spot between Indy's capitulation and then if Cincy, being the later game and having #3 locked up, rests its starters.

Maybe it's just hindsight, but it's interesting to see all the teams that outperformed their expectations early (Minnesota, New Orleans, Cincinnati, Denver) collapsing or regressing and the "usual" teams (Pittsburgh, New England, Philadelphia) coming on strong.

Are you talking about the Bengals or the Pats there? I imagine if the Pats cared either way they would rather see the Steelers in the playoffs than a 3rd matchup with the Jets, unless they feel they gained schematic advantages that can still be exploited in between the two games.

I was talking about the Bengals given a Pats win earlier in the day.

Saints lost two in a row. Colts now with a loss and some turmoil. Minnesota down 10, maybe losing 3 out of the past 4, and turmoil. Tough to remember a stretch run at the end of the season where the top teams had various issues.

I've seen players do that several times this year without it being called. The refs have gotten lazy about calling it in general.

OK, every team needs a guy upstairs to calm down these coaches with a dose of reality. Let them watch the TV feed if necessary. Calm down Childress and Peterson, that is a clear fumble. Although calling a timeout right now has benefits beyond giving the booth time to look at the play.

We are a coach away from being alright come playoff time.

Childress called his nice conservative game to get them down 16-0 before opening it up and watching the offense take off. Next week it goes right back to conservative game calling.

Its like Childress got tired of Favres success so he is trying to muzzle it all up.

Nope. The Vikings are what they are until Childress opens the game up. Im hoping this was a good thing so dipshit coach can realize the Vikings play their best when opening it up.

If they let Favre pass the ball they are one of the best teams in the NFL, if Childress thinks they can run the ball and score, they will be out in the 1st round whoever they play.

So lets say this scenario happens:

Vikes Win, Cards Lose, Cowboys Win.

Saints #1, Vikes #2, Cowboys #3, Cards #4, #5 Packers, #6 Eagles. That is crazy, to go from playing for a #2 seed to becoming the #6 seed and causing two matchups that happened the week before.

Pack vs Cards and Eagles at Cowboys. Hilarious. Packers @ Saints, Eagles @ Vikings (I would pick Eagles over them this time...)

If Vikes lose, Cards win, Eagles Win.... the seedings change completely.

Saints, Eagles, Cards, Vikes, Packers, Cowboys.

Cowboys @ Cards, Packers @ Vikes --- Cards win, Vikes win, Vikes @ Saints, Cards @ Eagles. I'll take my chances with that as a Vikings fan.

One way or another, the playoffs should be exciting...but we get one more week of this excitement.. or in the Vikings fan's case, one more week of what the hell is Childress doing?

All that bullshit coachspeak about treating everyone the same and having everyone follow the same rules is just that.....BULLSHIT COACHSPEAK. It is not as big of a deal as people make of it when another star player goes outside of what his coach wants if he feels it is best for the team whether it is Brett Favre or not.

Winning two in a row after losing five in a row is coming on strong? When those two wins are over Green Bay and Baltimore after being effectively out of the playoff race I'd say it qualifies.I wouldnt really call 13-2 collapsing. For that matter I wouldnt call 10-5 or 11-3 collapsing either. That's probably why I said collapsing or regressing.

But yes, 10-5 can be collapsing if you start 7-2 and then go 3-3 with single-digit wins at home over Cleveland, Detroit and Kansas City - and lose one of your best defensive players as icing on the cake. Or even when you're 13-2 if you started 11-0, looked unbeatable against a good team, then proceeded to beat a terrible team only because of an epic collapse and lost 2 straight at home, including to one of the worst teams in the NFL when trying to clinch homefield. And 11-4 can be too when you start 10-1 and are subsequently getting destroyed at the line of scrimmage by under .500 teams.

jbergey22
12-29-2009, 01:14 AM
Your expecations are a little high I believe. It is the NFL. The Vikings seem to have fallen off from the high expectations they had earlier because Childress is an idiot but the other two teams seem fine. The Vikings are notorious for this type of thing so its really not unexpected. Started 5-0 one year didnt make the playoffs. Only 15-1 team to not make the Super Bowl. Lost 4 Super Bowls. They are as cursed franchise as there is in the NFL.

The Eagles lost to the Raiders as the Saints lost to the Bucs as the Vikings lost to the Bears.

I dont think anyone really thought the Bengals were any higher than a 6th-12th best team which is how they have been playing IMO.

The Titans lost 59-0 and followed it by winning 7 out of 8 games.

When I think of collapse I think of the Mets blowing a huge lead a couple of years ago or the Tigers epic collapse to the Twins this year.

Even the Best(or 2nd best) team IMO in NFL history lost their most important game of the year. 2007 Pats.

Long story short. I think its hard to judge a collapse in the NFL as the sample size is really small playing only 16 games.
