View Full Version : Settle This Argument...
A workplace argument that needs to be decided here. Seinfeld or 24. Which series do you prefer?

I like both. Crap.
Seinfeld only by a slight margin.

It's kind of hard to compare the two. They are vastly different shows in different genres, but if I had to choose...
Seinfeld.
The first season of "24" was amazing television. It was quality. Gripping, exciting, all that good stuff. I enjoyed some of the later seasons as well, but it soon became clear that they just kept recycling old ideas and things became outlandish and stupid. I finally bailed on the show midway through the season that involved Jack's family - where his dad was evil and played by James Cromwell.
Seinfeld was better and was better for longer.

Seinfeld is among the all-time greats. 24 is very good, but not on the same level as Seinfeld.

I'm not agreeing with your IT guy. Seinfeld is better by an amazing margin, and I'm a fan of 24. Seinfeld is a masterpiece as a whole, while 24 is like a good popcorn flick where you don't mind the continual rolling of your eyes or the ridiculous crap you have to ignore. Not to mention that a couple of seasons have been complete disasters, while Seinfeld has few major misses in its run.

That's the season where we tried to pick up with the series. And yep, I bailed about halfway through (yeah, maybe it's not completely fair to rate the show w/o having seen the first couple of seasons, but it wouldn't pass Seinfeld anyway). Things were indeed too ridiculous. Seinfeld got increasingly silly and ridiculous too, but it's a comedy. Comedies can get away with that.

24. I liked Seinfeld back when it was on for what it was, but I look forward to watching 24 not Seinfeld reruns.

I voted 24 only because I could not, for the life of me watch seinfeld when it was on in primetime(I have no problems with it as a rerun. go figure).. while I could watch 24.

I don't see how I could ever watch 24 re-runs. The biggest draw of the show are the twists and turns and, if you know what's going to happen already, then it's not all that thrilling. Another problem I would have, is that I tend to catch re-runs here and there and I couldn't imagine sitting down to watch a random episode of 24 out of context with the rest of the season.
This is not really 24-specific. I'd have trouble watching a random re-run of almost any show that's structured that way (i.e., Lost).
Then again, that's just my view, others are bound to vary.

It is interesting that you picked a show where nothing happens and a show where an incredibly implausible amount of things happen. They're really almost perfect opposites.
But Seinfeld is better without a doubt.

I never found the Seinfeld characters at all sympathetic so the humor never had the full impact on me.
I haven't seen much of 24 but it seemed pretty watchable. That makes it a clear winner over Seinfeld in my book.

I won't watch 24 reruns. My answer is basically as crazy as the question. Since I don't see how someone can compare either of the shows to one another.

Seinfeld is 100% unwatchable. drives me up a wall. that being said, I didnt care for my limited exposure to 24, but at least their theme music didnt make me want to kill......we need a watch trout option, or a watch a turned off tv option....

I love 24. Catch every episode, good or bad & hope for things to improve when they are bad. Couldn't have cared less when Seinfeld was on. If it was on the tv, it was cool, but if it wasn't I didn't feel like I was missing anything.
As far as reruns, I feel the same way about Seinfeld as when it was new. It's cool, but not great... although it has provided many nice cultural references. Happy Festivus!
24 reruns I can't stand. Been there, done that. Next!
I couldn't vote for Seinfeld, simply because one of the most annoying people I work with is constantly quoting the show. Makes it impossible to enjoy an episode, knowing that the next day he'll be quoting it.

I watched the first season of 24 with great interest and it was one of the most fun seasons of tv I can remember, even with the dead spot of a few hours in the middle. The second was ok, and then got bored with the third. Agree that I could never see much re-watchability in the show.
Couldn't ever get through 5 minutes of Seinfeld- hate the characters, hate the plot, hate the dialog.
I guess I'd go with 24, but if I could get a "meh" for both, I'd have to pick that. (EDIT: Abe beat me to it above).
That said, if we're talking about the historical tv implications of the show and influence, it has to be Seinfeld, hands down.

The weakest part, of an otherwise very tight first season, was Jack's wife brief 2-hour or so bout of amensia. It setup a very cool scene (when Almeda showed up and saved her), but was otherwise completely stupid and foreshadowed things to come.

I thought the amnesia as well as Jack's wife and daughter held hostage were both dead spots in the first season. That said, I still talk about that season so fondly- they took every action movie cliche ever done and smashed it into one giant ball of goodness. It was great :D

We didn't pick up 24 until 4 or 5 seasons in. Watching that first season in rapid succession on DVD was fantastic.

I come to threads like this not as much for the discussion but to figure out the people who love shows I do (Seinfeld, Curb, The Office) and those who hate them. Later on when people recommend other shows I know who to listen to and who will end up getting me to rent a piece of crap like "Let the Right One In". :-)
To each their own I guess...

I love both shows. When I saw my first episode of Seinfeld (Mulva???) I thought it was one of the funniest shows that I had ever seen. It is a classic. I'm not sure that 24 is a classic but a really good show. It's a bit of the same old, same old now, but the first two/three seasons were fantastic.

It's hard to compare them, really. At least I think so - a cult comedy v. a slowly dying (but still really awesome, IMO) hit drama. I love them both.

You know, I don't like Seinfeld, but I'm pretty sure a show that was #1 in the Nielsen ratings for a couple of seasons doesn't qualify as "a cult comedy".

Not to get too far off topic, but the subtitles for the American DVD version of Let the Right One in are pathetically bad. A blog had a few examples comparing it to the theatrical version, and it was pretty insane.

Hm.. had to think about that statement. But 24 is definitely on the Rushmore of Fox dramas along with The X-Files, House, and... hm.. might almost have to give it to one of 90210/Melrose Place as those helped define Fox in the early years.

This can't be a serious poll.
Someone is actually comparing 24 to Seinfeld? That's like comparing...I dunno...Night Court to the Simpsons. Sure one is good, but the other is a landmark series and arguably the best EVER in it's respective category.
