Anyone try this? What's the early verdict?
Was looking at it and though I am not into Star Trek I was looking to try a different MMORPG and like that it is not the normal WoW/Everquest type. I think I am officially done with WoW, haven't signed on in quite a while and not going to re-up when the subsciption ends this month.

i'm way into Star Trek - unfortunately my old laptop wouldn't run it so i didn't sign up for the early beta or anything. not really sure how much time i have to devote to a MMORPG since i usually like to multitask while i game, but definitely wanted to try this out. SirFozzie had the early beta access...he was going to give me a rundown of what he thought about it.

City of Heroes forum has a huge thread talking about people playing the game. From what I gather people seem to like it.

Is the game just like the TV series? Can you tell just from looking at the landing party which guy is going to die during that mission?
"Kirk, Scotty, Spock, and Brian......beaming down. This doesn't look good for Brian."

If you like, you can in fact fill any open spots on your landing party with security. "Captain is beaming down. He's taking Roger, Ixnil, and two guys in red shirts we didn't even bother to name." However, they just get knocked unconscious, not killed. :)

From one of the more known posters on CoH's forum...
STO has, at least in my opinion, temporarily captured the holy grail of MMO design: making a game that for the most part people want to play just to play, and not play just to earn the rewards commensurate with playing.
They aren't saying it doesn't have flaws, but that it's still fun at the end of the day.

Why do you need Beta? Wasn't the official release day yesterday?
I'm still actively playing CoH and I'm not really looking to play another MMO, but this is at least a little intriguing. Can't say if I'll actually try it out though.

I'm actually surprised that CoH is still around after all this time. I always thought it was a good idea, but the execution wasn't there. When I played it, it seemed.......thin and non-immersive.
Maybe it's gotten better. I might try it out again if there's a trial.

I think there's pretty much always a trial available, but if you want to pick up with old characters (for free) you'd need to wait for a "reactivation" weekend. They've added a lot in five years. It still isn't everyone's cup of tea (probably only has about a base of 100k subscribers, but those are pretty constant), but the game has had a number of new features since its inception (and a bona fide paid expansion (http://www.cityofheroes.com/en.html) coming later this year on top of its regular "Issues").

I was in the STO beta and hated it to the point I cancelled my preorder.
I loved CoH/V, but found the away mission portions of STO to be really dumbed down versions of COH gameplay, and COH gameplay leaned toward "fun" in the first place.
The space portion was the proverbial hot mess, in my opinion, combining some of the worst aspects of Eve Online's space maneuverability (read also: none) and some of the more twitch-based combat of typical MMOs (read: nowhere near as twitchy as a shooter but still needing timing to pull things off). I really wanted to like it, having liked Freelancer and the idea of Eve, but I just couldn't.
To be fair, the art style was very reminiscent of Cryptic's more recent superhero game, Champions, and it really put me off and made a poor first impression. I was also in early enough that there were massive issues with lag and it made it hard to enjoy anything that wasn't instanced. I was also put off that the promised klingon experience seems to have gone the way, at best, of Lord Of the Rings Online's "monster play".
I would wait a while before spending real cash on this. Let it settle out, at least a patch or 2, would be my sincere advice. And go in expecting more of a Sid Meier's Pirates! meets MMO experience than something truly Star Trekian. There wasn't that feel of sitting in the Captain's chair confronted by an emerging threat, or warping away from a sticky situation to lick one's wounds and plot one's revenge, or anything remotely freeform. Its very much in the mode of click questgiver, skim some flavor text, and find out what item or mob you have to grind on x number of times to complete. This may flesh out once people reach higher end content. I LIKE MMO style gameplay, this just didn't do it for me, and like I said at the top, I preordered, so I was primed to be a fanboi.
SUMMARY: WAIT and WATCH.

I think 100K right now would be kind. There has been a rather long wait between the last major update and the expansion pack that a number of people are off playing other stuff and waiting to see how well GR turns out. Even if Cryptic's PR can't seem to keep sticking their head into their own rear, I'm sure the drop has a lot to do with CO as well.
And CoH does have a trial version. I really dislike some of the limitations trial accounts have. I think it would help bring in people if they loosened up the restrictions a bit.

Couldn't find a real good place to put this. Today's Google Doodle for Star Trek's 46th birthday is fantastic. Literally takes you through a mini-episode.
