I am currently using 1&1 for my web-hosting. They do not allow remote connections to a MySQL database and as a result, dbupdater doesn't work.

Is it possible to get this to work without going the dedicated server or VPS solution route? (Which are pretty costly.) I'm willing to switch web-hosting providers to try this out.

If you're only hosting a small number of databases, aplus.net is great. I think it's $9.99 a month and you get three dbs, with remote access.

Dola:

To clarify, the ylnd stuff has been with aplus.net since Aug. 01, if I recall correctly. Remember when FOF2K4 came out and viatech's server's crashed and the one mirror that worked really fast was mine? That was aplus.net. They've been awfully reliable for a very long time. And I just checke. You can now get multiple MySQL databases on the $5.95 a month plan. I can't say with certainty that you get remote access with those, but I can say that when I was on the $9.99 a month plan, I had remote access.

(Oh, and if you switch to them, holla first so I can get my referral fee.) ;)

I've started a chat with them and if they answer my questons properly, I'll make sure you get the referral.

I'm not sure the technician knows what I'm asking...

Mike: I am trying to find a web-hosting service that allows remote connection to MySQL databases. My current one does not allow it so I was looking to find a new one to switch to.

Mike: Does aplus.net allow that?

Andrew L: PHPmyadmin allows connection to mysql databas, you may do that from Control Panel at MYsql Database manager

Mike: Right, but if I have a data on my home PC and a script that calls the MySQL database, will I be able to connect that way?

Mike: When installing MySQL, when somebody configures the security settings, there is a checkbox for "Enable root access from remote machines". When the MySQL database is created, if this is checked, then you allow what I'm looking for. If it's unchecked, you don't.

Andrew L: you may use Mysql client Mysql Front for example

Mike: Unfortunately, I don't think that answers my question.

Mike: At least, I'm not sure what that means.

He told me I could access it via Mysql Front. That looks pretty useful, but maybe not for the needs of a dbupdater user. READ: This may give me the right permissions, ports opened, but I'm not sure...

If MySQL Front runs on your local PC (and it looks like it does), then it's the same thing, opening a remote connection. The MySQL QueryBrowser is also a good test for this.

Basically they all do the same thing DBUpdater does (probably using the same DLLs from MySQL even).

Great, thanks for the info, I'll have to give it a go now and see what happens.

Done!

And the first run with dbupdater is hard at work. I love me some relaxed security rules web-hosts!

Are you doing a MP league, or SP?

Well, I'm testing it against the current build of IHOF.

DBupdater is finished, so the test worked. I think I need to delete the database and start from scratch to get a mature league with every season's stats put in.

So, the next question is...how do I get the DB to reflect all stats for multiple seasons? Do I need to go back to the End Of Season file for each year?

Disregard, found my answer here...

I thought I had read that before.

It's gonna be a minute to update the entire league database.

The DBUpdater runs will take roughly 90 minutes to 2 1/2 hours per season, depending on your internet connection speed, so make sure you're doing it from a stable connection. If you're missing a season, it's not a huge deal, it just means that you won't have transactions, game-by-game schedules, and injuries for that year. I can still get the stats for you.
