Has anyone messed around, over several seasons or trial runs, with bringing in a large number of rookie free agent quarterbacks w/ high volatility to training camp in hopes that one or more boom in camp?

I've been playing w/ the Steelers and Big Ben finally retired, but my team is still too competitive end up with anything earlier than a pick in the high 20s, so my prospects for a first round stud QB seem pretty slim. It seems like there are a decent number of undrafted QBs w/ potential in the 50s, so I figure bringing 8 or 10, with high volatility ratings, into camp could net me a future starter, but after 3 seasons -- no luck.

Anyone messed around with this concept and gotten a good QB out of it or am I wasting my time?

Not in 6.3a. My experience is that a lot of these QBs have a fatal flaw in some category. Under 6.3a these seem to be magnified.

I'm sure given enough time you'll find one eventually. I'd try using a draft pick on one, though. It'll be a lot quicker. Meanwhile, you can still bring lots of undrafted FAs from many different positions and maybe find a player or two.

Oddly enough, I signed a journeyman-type, 6th-year guy during late FA that was like 45/45 and he boomed up to 58/58 after training camp and we won the Super Bowl.

The bad part is that I only signed him to a one-year deal. :)

I think you're going to have to keep them around longer to see if they boom.

I've been playing FoF since the original, and the only real Diamond in the Rough I ever encountered was in FoF 2004. I drafted him with the final pick of the draft, "Mr Irrelevant".

It was so long ago that I don't remember his stats. But I started him for a couple games his rookie season because my starter was hurt. Again in the second season because the starter was hurt again. Then from his 3rd season for another 10 years or so he was my starter, with a couple bowl wins and over 40k yards passing
