Because of the funky state profile for WV, you can fit in a lot of schools into a SCE8 in WV.
If I were to put the SCE 8 in WV, here are the places I would look:
State Schools, WV:
Fairmont State University - Enrollment 7,800. Less than one hour from WVU
West Virginia State University - Enrollment 7k. Right beside Charleston, WV. A Historically Black school that is no longer.
Concord University - 3k, out in the middle of nowhere
Shepherd University - 4.4k - in the Eastern Panhandle and that puts it near the eastern seaboard.
West Liberty University - 2.6k, in the Northern Panhandle next to Ohio and Pennsylvania.
I am skipping schools like Granville State, WV Wesleyan, Univeristy of Charleston and so forth (too small)
Funny -
West Virginia University - Parkersburg - 4400 people, no athletic teams.
Mountain State University located in Beckley, 5100 people, no football team.
The Next State Over:
Kentucky - Not much falls in the geographic range of WV. Pikeville has a college with about 1k people.
Maryland - Western Maryland is in the geographic range of WV and includes just a couple of rural counties with only two schools worth looking at:
Frostburg State Univ in Frostburg - 6100 enrollment (no football team though)
University of Maryland - Hagerstown - Just five years old, no football team, could not easily find enrollment numbers.
Pennsylvania - This is very promising, with the entire southwest corner of the sate in the WV latititude and longitude.Pretty much everything from Harrison Township and Indiana, over to a line at Mt Union is in. That includes a ton of schools.
Carnegie Mellon University - 11,000, in Pittsburgh, but waaay back in Div III right now, so that's a huge leap.
Duquesne University - 11,300, Pittsburgh, actually play in Div-1AA (the old name for it) so makes sense.
University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown - 3k, First branch campus in nation, currently plays the WV schools.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania - 14k, Div II.
California University of Pennsylvania - 8k, currently Div II
Seton Hill - 2.1k, in Greenburg, currently plays the WV schools
Robert Morris - Moon Township in the Pittsburgh area, 5100, no football team, Div1-AA for sports
Skip schools in Pitt like Chatham and Carlow
For fun, St. Vincent College just rebooted their football program in 2007, and have lost a ton of games. 1800 students in Latrobe, PA.
Juniata College, in Huntingdon, PA has 1800 students and a Div III football team
I'm sure there's one or two here or there I missed.
Ohio - There's a sizeable slot of Ohio that is in the lines of WV. A hortizontal line through Carrollton and Millersburg, over to a vertical line in Logan and Newark. What can we find in here?
Kenyon College - In Gambier, a very rich private school with 1650 students. Npo football tema I could find.
Marietta College, 1400 students, just across teh Ohio River from WVU-P,
For another fun name, Franciscan University of Steubenville, with its 2500 students and zero football team
University of Rio Grande, in Rio Grade Ohio, 2300, no football.
Muskingum University in New COncord Ohio, with 3k students, with Div III football team
Finally:
Virginia - A really nice chunk of VA is in the WV range, from Blacksburg and Roanoke over to just west of Richmond, and up to the border, west of Manassas. Lots of ground to cover here.
Good candidates:
Liberty University - 20.5k students, Div 1-AA team, in Lynchburg - a serious contender
Radford University - Radford VA, JUST south of the lines, but you could cheat it in, almost 9k, Div 1-AA football team
Virginia Military Institute - VMI is a classic school in Lexington, VA with a HUGE endowment, just 1300 students, and yet, they have a Div 1-AA football team.
Challenge - Roanoke College, with 2000 students, hasnlt had a football team since WWII.
University of Richmond - 4250 students, Div 1-AA football team
Virginia Commonwealth Univ - Richmond, 32k students, no football team
James Madison University - Harrisonburg, VA Div 1-AA football team, 18500 students
Washington and Lee - LExington VA, Div IIi football team, 2200 enrollment
Shenandoah University - Winchester VA,Div III football team, 1600 students
And there's a solid list. I made this just now so I can build my own SCE8 tomorrow for WV, and this willg ive me the info I want.
