Today I'm celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary. Yes, we got married on April Fool's Day. Thought I'd put up a poll just to check to see how my marital bliss measured up against other people.

If the third one doesn't work I'm done.

Dola, am interested in how many have been married more than once and if that first marriage has made you a better husband/wife to your current spouse?

A resounding yes for me....I had no business getting married when I did the first time and I enjoy the whole concept so much more this time around.

It's going to be 5 for my wife and I this July. After I mentioned that this past winter to a friend of mine, he just started glancing back and forth between the two of us and said "no" a couple of times in disbelief. I think it was a bit of "wait, it can't have been that long ago, can it?"

Yeah, I've only been married once, but I'm like you in that I dated my wife for 6 years before we got married. Her parents didn't want her getting married until she was through with residency, which was fine by me. So we've been together 16 overall.

This is my second marriage (her first), and we will be celebrating 15 years later on this year. As for whether it's made me a better husband, I would tend to say yes. I think I am much more appreciative of what it takes to be in a true relationship/marriage. My communication is much better. I think I've taken what I learned about myself in my first marriage and applied it successfully so far in this one.

This is epic.

I just reached 6 years last month. My wife and I have been together for 11 years, though. After our third or fourth year together, our relationship kinda went like this until the wedding:

Her: Time to get married!
Me: What? Already?
Her: Well, we are going to get married, right? :p
Me: Yeah, I guess.
Her: What does that mean?
Me: It means we're going to get married. (I was usually eating popcorn at the time)
Her: Time to get married!
Me: Already? :)
Her: :banghead:

hehe, we're not much better. This year, we went to bed a little past midnight on the eve of our anniversary so my wife wished me a happy 12th anniversary and we kissed goodnight.

It was only the next morning that I remembered that she was 6 months pregnant with Andrew when we got married and that Andrew was to turn 13 in March this year, so it was indeed our 13th anniversary. oops... :)

Another funny story is that often tell people that while we're Canadian, we were forced by the American government to get married. At the time, I was getting ready to work in the States under a work visa that required us to be married if she wanted to live with me in the Sattes for more than 180 days in the year. So we got married despite not really having any plans to do so. :)

I'd say yeah. Was 21 the first time and just way not ready. 35 for the second one and I thought overall I did much better -- though she dumped me for another guy so I guess that could be a sign that I didn't.......

Generally, I believe failed relationships give you great insight into what makes a successful one. I have huge respect for those who maintain long term relationships and my family is part of that group: parents married 48 years, both brothers married over 15 years to their high school sweethearts.

There are three types of women: the ones who can't remember, the ones who obsess down to the day (15 years, 6 months and 27 days, pulling random numbers out of my ass to fit your 'almost 16' example), and the ones who embellish up to the nearest whole number because it sounds more impressive that way. :D
