Apparently they called a player today on a little known rule. If you have the absolute best hand on the river (say, QKc on a board of 9TJ all clubs), and you are the last to act, you CANNOT check.
Doing so is evidence of soft play/collusion. I bet it doesn't happen that often, but it happened today during the main event, and the player (who checked because he wanted to show everyone the straight flush he had), was penalized and had to sit out a round of hands.

I remember when Chad Brown checked down the nuts (quads on board and he had an Ace) in a Heads Up Championship Match against Kristy Gazes. It was especially bad because she had misread her hand and would have called whatever he put out there. There's nothing easier to do in poker than betting the nuts in position on the river.

Another interesting incident last night:
Two players left in the hand, one bets enough to put the second player all-in if he calls, the second takes several minutes to decide whether to call. Finally, the clock is called, and the floor person comes over and starts the 60 second countdown.
With three seconds left on the countdown, the second player says "call". The dealer hears it, the other players at the table hear it.... however... the floor person does NOT hear it. He finishes the countdown and declares the second player's hand dead. Queue up the controversy.
As it turns out, it saved that second player's WSOP tournament. He was beaten, so he saved some of his chips (although, if I was the first player I would gently suggest that the floor person listen harder next time, or invest in a hearing aid)

So, Johnny Chan Is Basically Crushing This Thing
On the flop of http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/9d.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/8s.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/5h.gif, Johnny Chan bet 4,500 and was called in two spots. The turn brought the http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/Td.gif and Chan checked. His two opponents also checked behind him.
The river completed the board with the http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/8d.gif. Chan fired a bet of 7,700. The first player called and then the next player called before Chan tabled the http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/Ah.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/8h.gif for trip eights. His opponents both mucked and Chan moved to a whopping, field-leading 425,000 in chips.

Ouch. It's gotta suck to be Billy Kopp. Last year ran into higher flush when he was assured a final table spot. And now this...
Kopp Coolered, Runs Second Nuts into Nuts
After a series of preflop raises, Billy "Patrolman35" Kopp and Nicolas Babel took a flop of [8s 8d 4c. They both checked.
Fireworks exploded after the http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/ac.gif turned. Kopp checked-raised Babel all in, and Babel snapped it off with the stone cold nuts.
Showdown
Kopp: [as ah
Babel: [8c 8h
Kopp needed the case ace to survive, but found no help from the http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/ks.gif on the river. Kopp hit the rail while Babel ballooned to 500,000 chips.

Remaining Scenarios
jbergey22 - Just needs to maintain lead. Rooting for everyone but Michael Mizrachi to take a quick dive. Especially rooting against Jason Mercier, Scotty Nguyen, and Allen Cunningham who are taken by his closest competitors.
Quiksand - Needs Jason Mercier to finish in the top 15 (but not win) and for Michael Mizrachi to get eliminated quickly.
rockboy70 - Needs Scotty Nguyen to finish in the top 12 and needs to dodge points from Allen Cunningham and Michael Mizrachi.
larrymcg421 - Needs Allen Cunningham to cash for at least $50,000 or he cannot pass rockboy. If he does make it that far, then a combination of good scorres from Cunningham and Nguyen could do it.
kingfc22 - Cannot win, since Jason Mercier is picked by Quiksand.
MollyMurphy - The previous champ cannot win since Scotty Nguyen is picked by rockboy and larrymcg.
Subby - Has no players left in the main event.
TroyF - Needs Selbst to cash for at least $720,000 to pass larrymcg, who also has Cunningham. If that happens, then a combination of those two could do the trick.
Lathum - Needs Jason Mercier to win the whole thing.
albionmoonlight - Eliminated because Scotty Nguyen is picked above.
cuervo72 - Eliminated because Selbst is picked above.
digamma - With 4 players left and only one of them picked by someone ahead, Digamma has the most dangerous roster left. He still needs them to score a ton of points or for. Timoshenko as ME Winner is essentally meaningless because if he wins, Digamma would almost certainly win on points anyways.
MIJB19 - In last place by a ton, but can still win in a tie with Lathum if Mercier wins the whole thing.

07-14-2010, 08:02 PM
Well, there was a good deal of context... but as the money bubble was approaching, a hand was folded to me on the button, and I had AK. My stack was such that the BB was pretty much obliged to call with any two cards. In my head, I thought it was likely but not certain that I could just fold the next 6 or so hands and eke into the money... or I could push my AK and take my chances (fairly likely to be only something like 60/40 against two random unpaired cards below my K).
(This was after a couple tough hands pushed me from a solid stack to a weakling stack, and I had basically folded my way through about 75 minutes of play to get to this point)
Anyway... I really did agonize over it (maybe 2-3 minutes, I'm not an in-the-tank sort of guy really) and then pushed. He called with J2o, I won the hand, and I had enough chips then to actually last into day two (http://www.cardplayer.com/poker-players/42519-michael-sanderson/overall/results).

Did anyone see the details of Ted Forrest's prop bet win over Mike Matusow? Forrest weighed in at 188 at the beginning of the WSOP, if he could lose 50 pounds by September 15th, he'd win $1 million from Matusow. If he could lose the 50 pounds by the end of the WSOP (not including the November Nine), he'd win $2 million.
Well, yesterday, Ted Forrest weighed in at 138. He hadn't eaten solid food in nine days (relying on a mixture of water, a touch of maple syrup and other things, as well as laps around the UNLV track in a sauna suit with additional layers of clothing on. This was one of the hands that did it:
Big Call by the Grinder
Duy Le opened for 40,000 from middle position, then Getty Mattingsley made it 105,000 from the button. Michael Mizrachi called from the small blind, the big blind folded, and Le called.
The flop came http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/8s.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/Th.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/4s.gif and all three checked. The turn was the http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/Kh.gif. It checked to Mattingsley who bet 196,000, and both Mizrachi and Le called.
The river was the http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/5s.gif. Mizrachi checked, and Le bet 500,000. Mattingsley got out, and the Grinder went into the tank for a good while before making the call.
Mizrachi showed http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/7d.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/7s.gif. He'd made the right decision, as Le just had http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/Jd.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/9d.gif.
Le has 2.5 million now, while the Grinder moves up to 3.9 million.

Yeah, that is a pretty sick call, the funny thing about a call like that is either a great player or a terrible player are the only ones that would make it. Mizrachi had to have his opponent on that exact hand to call.

This is why I would never become a "good" poker player. I would no way in hell make that call on the turn....
Exactly!
I think the better/worse call was after the turn where the was 3 over cards and both players in the pot.
Of course with a flush possibility and 3 overs after the river it was pretty amazing as well. I am thinking the grinder had to be the most worried about the flush on how that river card was bet out. He likely figured Le wasnt going to bet into a possible flush like with just a pair after how he played that hand.
In any case yes it was a difficult call and one that seperates the average/great players.

More importantly, Baldwin out in 59th, clinching the championship for jbergey22. jbergey22 made a nice run last year with Phil Ivey as his ME winner pick and almost stole the championship. This year he wins going away thanks to his pick of Mizrachi, who had a dominating World Series run.

Ouch. Poker is brutal....
Matt Affleck Eliminated in 15th Place ($500,165)
There are monsterpotten and then there are MONSTERpotten. It's a silly game, sometimes, poker is. Matt Affleck's chance at fortune and glory just slipped through his fingers after a stunning beat for a monsterpotten at the hand of Jonathan Duhamel.
Duhamel started things with a raise to 550,000 from the cutoff position. Affleck had the button and three-bet to 1.55 million. His re-raise folded the blinds and brought the action back to Duhamel. Duhamel four-bet to 3,925,000 and was called by Affleck, creating a pot with 8.0 million chips in it before the flop!
Duhamel seemed to sense he was in trouble. He checked a ten-high flop, http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/10d.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/9c.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/7h.gif, and soon faced a 5.0-million-chip bet from Affleck. Duhamel called that bet to see the http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/qd.gif hit the turn. Again he checked. Affleck did the only thing he could do -- he moved all in for 11.6 million chips.
Duhamel had Affleck covered, but it was still a huge decision. He asked for a count, which due to the size of Affleck's stack took about a minute to determine. Then Duhamel went into the tank. The leading speculation in the media tower was that he had pocket jacks and was stuck with a horrible decision.
A minute and a half after he got Affleck's count, Duhamel peeked at his cards and puffed his cheeks out in a big sigh. Thirty seconds later he stole a glance at Affleck. Another minute. Duhamel shook his head. Then thirty seconds later, almost five minutes after Affleck pushed all in, Duhamel called!

Affleck: http://www.wsop.com/images/cards/ac.gifhttp://www.wsop.com/images/cards/as.gif
Affleck immediately stood up. The pot was huge, a total of 42 million chips. If his aces could hold, he'd be almost assured a berth in the November Nine.
The entire rail leaned forward in anticipation...

A collective gasp was let out. Duhamel filled a queen-high straight! Affleck bowed his head to the rail, burying his face in his hat. It was impossible not to feel for him, how close he had come and how brutally everything had been snatched away from him. He looked as though he was doing his best to fight back tears as he watched his stack slide over to Duhamel. By the time he departed, his face was bright red, overcome with the emotion of what just transpired.

Duhamel played that hand so poorly and ended up getting rewarded. That is just horrible. WTF could he have possibly thought Affleck had they he could have beat at that point???

I don't know. Even if Affleck's cards are turned up, he's got 10 outs and he's calling $11 million into a $30 million pot.

Seems like the main event dirma last few years is in big pro a lesser pro and a bunch of no names. I actually think that works well. Creates new blood but gives people a rooting interest.

So a girl I know was dating a guy who played poker. I've never met him and don't much about him, except that he had played in Vegas a few times. They'd been dating for a while but broke up last year, although they're still on reasonably good terms.
Anyways, turns out he's some guy named Jonathan Duhamel. I wonder how he's doing these days.

not seeing the hole cards makes it a lot different to watch than normal. ive never watched poker where i couldnt see the players cards...makes it a little bit boring, but can be fun trying to figure out what they might have.

Racner doubles up early. He is just flat calling a lot of flops from the SB despite being the small stack, I think he feels he can outplay Duhamel after the flop.

Finally caught up on my DVR. Some very sick hands at the final table and Cheong just flat out donated his chips to Duhamel.
