Bob Probert spent 16 seasons in the NHL playing for the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings. He was drafted by the Wings in 1983.

Probert, 45, one of the most feared pugilists in the history of the sport, was rushed to Windsor Regional Hospital after collapsing onboard a boat on Lake St. Clair, a lake that lies between Ontario, Canada and the U.S. state of Michigan.
Windsor radio station AM 800 CKLW reported that Probert was transported to Windsor Regional Hospital where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Probert, a tough guy for the Detroit Red Wings (http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/team/detroit-red-wings/66304) and Chicago Blackhawks (http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/team/chicago-blackhawks/66303) in the 80's and 90's, held the Red Wings franchise record for career penalty minutes with 2,090 and is fifth on the list of NHL all-time penalty minutes with 3,300.

Looks like a heart attack. He developed severe chest pain prior to collapsing. 45 is just too young for for that, especially for a world class athlete not that many years removed from the game :(

I used to love the guys that wore the T-shirts with the belts around them and read "Bob Probert undisputed heavy weight champ of the NFL", or the "Give Blood, Fight Probert" ones.

It's hard to imagine he's gone. That '87-88 Wings team, the year that Probert was an All-Star and absolutely dominated 29 goals/398 PIMS, was the team that got me into hockey. I had just moved back to Michigan from having lived in Dallas for 4 years and immediately fell back in love with the sport and that Wings team, in particular.

I remember the palpable excitement in the city, not just the arena, but actually over the entire city the day leading up to Probert's re-matches with both Troy Crowder (1991) and Tie Domi (1992).
