Looks great. Every year tempted to try this or FIFA. From all accounts here fifa is fun but every team plays the same style, which is pretty much why I haven't bought it.

PES seems to be ragged on a bit as falling behind fifa or if not that perhaps complex enough trying to do moves that it takes away from the fun factor.

Add in FM is my football fix and I'm just not sure if I bought one of the console games that I'd actually have time to get it in the rotation.

So many games, so little time :D

Some questions also as long as we're in a PES thread.

I understand fifa has all\most of the club licenses, correct?

So how does pes handle leagues like Barclay Premier? Take Liverpool for example, what do you get in pes?

Real players?
Fake kits, I assume red without real badges or sponsors?
Can real logos\badges be added to the console game?
Is Anfield in the game or are real stadiums generic?

How are the teams named? Is Arsenal called Arsenal? If not I assume it can be edited?

Does Konami provide an online server (like 2k share) where one can d'load "real name\kit\logo" mods for the console game?

@ sweed : It depends. Theres leagues where you get everything real (like the spanish league f.e.) , then some with real player names and likeness (and attributes obviously matching) but fake team names, then some with fake player names.

everything can be edited but no sharing like with NCAA football f.e. . I´m pretty sure there are work-arounds for both the 360 and the PS3 (and the PC, there it should be easiest), but i never bothered to find out as i was fine with editing the team names and a few players i cared about myself and be done with it.
Also no idea what exactly is licensed and what not, didn´t get the game last year (and it changes year to year with some exclusive deals by EA running out). Got only FIFA last year for the first time ever as i rented PES and hated it all of a sudden after preferring it over FIFA for years and being exclusively a PES guy.
They went in a bad direction imo with player movement and response the last couple years and last year did it for me unfortunately ... It kind of felt like what FIFA did in 07 or 08 and annoyed the crap out of me (why would you copy the franchise you´ve proven superior over ?) The early PES titles were incredible, i still ocassionally play one of the older ones on the PS2 when i´m home for birthdays and my cousings are over.

The "every team plays the same" is an issue with FIFA, but it was (to my knowledge) also one of the major criticisms with PES last year, the sliders for the teams were there but not executed very well.

Guess, like usual, I'll be reading reviews and contemplating getting one of the two. Probably leaning more to fifa as it seems, like EA's hockey game, to have more of a fun factor. Usually in the run up to Christmas someone has it on sale for ~$39. If I pull the trigger it will probably be then.

I'd love to see PES get back to what it used to be last generation (for 360/PS3 I mean, I really like the Wii versions of PES but they play very differently and aren't all that popular), two good soccer games would mean neither company could afford to slack off.

I would say that most every team except the very top ones played the same. You could definitely see a style with Man U or Barca. Although playing Fulham or Bolton felt exactly the same.

The thing I've always liked about PES over FIFA is that it feels like you're playing soccer and you can get an emotional thrill over a well executed play. They definitely slacked in improving gameplay and the master league career mode over the past few years, but it looks as that may have changed.

I got FIFA first last year after all the hype about how it was better than PES .... I hated it, it 'looks' great but I found I simply couldn't shoot - after several days of playing strikers through on the keeper and them tapping it weakly at the keeper I largely gave up on it.

Then I got PES a once it dropped in price a bit, the love was back - the controls were the same as they've always been (a bit plus for me as FIFA uses different controls and I've always been a PES player) but most importantly you can actually shoot and score on the game ....

Yes FIFA undoubtably has lots more 'moves' (ie. button combos) and probably has better animation but PES is easy to play and fun (with realistic movement of players in the main) which is what I want out of an action soccer title ...

I'm not sure if this makes me lame, an old man, or both..but the most fun I had with an arcade soccer game this year was EA's World Cup game using the two button mode. No fancy moves or crazy combos, just pass and shoot, and for the most part it did what I wanted. I did run into the issue Marc mentioned with really puzzling shots that kept getting tapped at the keeper. I was playing co-op with a friend and we had a great time, able to form some really nice runs/plays and put together things better than traditionally when one of us would accidentally hit the wrong button or try some fancy maneuver. It brought back the simplicity of Sensible in a way. Im not sure if FIFA 10 also had this mode?

I didnt even try PES this year because I had been so disappointed with it, but maybe I will give it a shot especially since it is in the bargain bin now. I had been annoyed with the pace of the game, and the robotic players.

This looks very promising. I love the idea of chaining dribble moves together (why has nobody ever thought of that before) and the way that passing/moving off the ball seems to work, also the concept that there are detailed tactics and individual instructions that will change the way that teams and players act on the field.

We'll see what the final product looks like but I'd love a strong PES to challenge FIFA (which for me is a game that looks good on the outside but usually ends up going on the shelf after a couple of plays because it just feels nothing like real soccer)
