Mighty Wind (http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Movies/04/16/review.mighty.wind/index.html)

Same writers, same concept (mockumentary), almost identical cast. I'm actually shocked that it might have turned out good.

I loved Best In Show. I need to see this movie.

I'm with you. It looks great. Did you ever get to see Waiting for Guffman? Same deal. I didn't think it was as good as Best in Show, but Mighty Wind looks hilarious.

I can't wait to see this. "Best in Show" is one of my all time favorite movies.

um, lets go a little further back here. this is the same cast as the classic Spinal Tap. the main 3 are in the band again, only this time, its...whatever band they are in Mighty Winds.

This movie is about Folk Music...yes the members of Spinal Tap play in a trio...but it isn't related to Spinal Tap in any way.

Check out this website. (http://amightywindonline.warnerbros.com/index.php)

This site has the trailer and a bunch of funny clips. I can't wait for this movie. I am a Guffman junkie. Actually, I have all 3 of the movies (Guffman, Spinal Tap, and Best in Show) on DVD - rewatching Spinal Tap tonight to get ready for the Wind.

I'm talking about the others in the cast, though. Eugene Levy, Catherone O'Hara, Fred Willard, Larry Miller, etc. I haven't seen Guffman, so maybe they are ALL in that one as well, but I don't recall most of those guys being in Spinal Tap.

If you haven't seen the DVD of Best in Show I highly recommend it. The deleted scenes are histerical. Lots of meaningless, but really funny improv.

Though Fred Willard had a nice little turn in Spinal Tap. He was the uniformed guy escorting the band to the stage on the military base... I seem to recall him making a comment about his "long hair" (which was maybe 1" in length, but for military standards I suppose long) and saying something like "Gee, the guys are going to think I'm a member of the band!"

As I recall, this sets up the brilliant rendition of "Sex Farm" for the military audience. Genius.

I can't wait for the mew movie. There's a place in my heart for Parker Posey - I find her much more interesting that most of the competitors in the "Hot Chick" contests going on here, never mind what she might look like in a thong.

Parker Posey is also an excellent actress.

but back to spinal tap.. god what a great movie.

Parker Posey is an incredible actress. She was fantastic in both Guffman and Best in Show. I first noticed her in Dazed and Confused.
Fred Willard in Best in Show is probably one of my favorite characters of all time.

What about that guy in Guffman who for his audition does the scene from "Raging Bull".

"You fuck my wife?"
"What?"
"You fuck my wife?"

Classic. My wife and I say that all the time in his bad southern accent. God I love those movies.

Couldn't agree with you more. I love Parker Posey. Given a choice, I'd rather have her than a ton of the "hottest" chick in some of the previous threads.

OK, I saw this last night, and....I left the theater mildly disappointed.

The movie is still very funny and if you haven't seen one in this genre, I think it would definitely be worth your while. There are a ton of laughs. The song lyrics are great and the premise is a good one. But overall, I think, based on Best in Show and Guffman I was expecting more.

The good:
1. Fred Willard. Wha' Happened? He is a comic genius.
2. The folk music. Their characterizations were really good and as I said the lyrics and performances were a trip.
3. Jennifer Coolidge. She wasn't on the screen very much but when she was she was fantastic.

My complaints:
1. You didn't get to know the characters as well as in Best in Show or Guffman. Not enough character development.
2. Not enough dialogue. The best scenes in the prior movies were the winged dialogue--particularly the "announcing scenes" of the dog show in Best in Show. Here they went for more of the documentary monologues and not as much interaction. As I said, still very funny, but just not as funny.
3. Not enough Parker Posey.

Curious to hear others thoughts as they see the movie.

Just curious for those Spinal Tap fans - have any of you watched 'Still Crazy' a similar theme, but with a great soundtrack

No. Haven't seen that. Might look it up, though.

BTW, the audio commentary on the Spinal Tap DVD is awesome. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer do the commentary in character. Very funny stuff.

The outtakes are really good too.

There is a pretty good interview in the current Time magazine with Guest, Shearer, Levy and McKehon.

On a side note, the style they use, a strong story with predefined scenes where the dialogue is then improved is an old style called Commedia. I have worked with a couple of troups where we worked like this, but live. Each show had the same story, but came out a bitdifferently. It was by far the most enjoyable theate I have been a part of.

KWhit
04-18-2003, 06:55 PM
I've done some of that myself. Commedia del arte (No Idea if I spelled that right). It's a classical Italian style of theatre with pre-defined characters (the lovers, the fool, the pompous doctor etc).

I suppose you could say Guest's movies were influenced by this. Did it say that in the article? Did Guest himself say that was an influence. Interesting. I had never thought of that.

I haven't done any acting in awhile. I need to do that again. I found it very enjoyable.

JPhillips
04-18-2003, 07:03 PM
KWhit: No he didn't mention commedia, but he did describe the process by saying the characters backgrounds are prepared and not allowed to be changed so that all of the actors know the same info. He went on to describe how the story line is written and the 120 scenes that were shot are all layed out as to what has to happen in each. Within each scene the dialogue and action is improved. That just screamed commedia to me.

Where did you do commedia? I created and ran a troupe in MS and recently worked with some college students in KY. Great fun and very entertaining rehearslas. Too bad two thirds of the humor in rehearsals tends to get tossed out because it doesn't really advance the story.

Totally. I do some writing (when I can make myself!) and that's the way my stuff goes too. I've written stage plays and screenplays and the best stuff ends up getting cut. But that's what you have to do to tell a good story.

I did commedia in college. I went to a theatre conservatory and majored in musical theatre. We never performed commedia - just did it in class. We created masks (you probably know, some commedia uses masks and some doesn't) for our characters and the class was to teach us how to act without using words.

Do you still perform?

JPhillips
04-18-2003, 07:15 PM
Yeah I do some performing, but mostly improv now. I am going to move to DC in the fall and start an MFA directing prgram at Catholic University. As far as the masks, I just made some a couple of months ago. There is almost nothing more fun than the first time Capitano sees his mask with his giant phallic nose!

Where did you go to school? I have friends that have been all oer the place. I'de love to read some of your work. One of my interests is working with original scripts. I haven't done as much as I would like, but it has always been a create experience. I love the collaboration that comes with a show's first production.

I just saw A Mighty Wind today, and I agree with the consensus. It's the weakest of the three films from Guest and company, but if youu stick it with ten random movies, it's probably better than nine of them. I liked it, it had several laugh-out-loud moments, and was very clever, of course.

Oh, and then there's Parker Posey. Not enough Parker Posey.

I find that Guest's movies get better with each viewing. When I first saw Best in Show I thought it was far weaker than Waiting for Guffman, but it has grown on me a lot. I bet "Wind" will be the same. I'll definitely get the DVD and find the nuances that always make these films great.

as someone who loved Guffman and Best in Show, I really liked that they tried to do something different here--something more serious. isn't eugene levy the best?

the other cool thing about it is that the actors actually wrote and arranged all the music.

My wife was able to bring home the script for the new Guest/Levy movie that will be coming our later this year. It's called For Your Consideration (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470765/fullcredits) and stars all of the regulars from Guffman, Best in Show, and Mighty Wind. The movie is about an independent movie (starring a bunch of has beens and never will bes)called Home for Purim that begins to pick up a lot of Oscar buzz.

I had heard this about these type movies, but the script is very short and simply describes scenes and characters in short paragraphs with little or no written dialogue. It looks like it has the potential for a number of good laughs and I'll be curious to see how they develop it from the "script."

Just one to keep on your radar.

Here's hoping for more Parker Posey.

Amazing the number of Parker Posey fans. She's one of my favorites in each of these movies -- she's not "foxy," she just has a quality.

I do still chuckle at myself for the disruption I caused at a wedding due to A Mighty Wind. During the candle lighting, the minister started his soliloquy talking about what the candle represents. When he finished, I leaned over to Mrs. kcchief19 and said, "It also represents a penis."

She came very close to getting us kicked out.

You must be watching some seriously bad movies then. If I stick it with ten random movies it will come in dead last 90% of the time.

I can not think of a worse movie I have ever seen. I just kept waiting for something to happen and then the movie ended.

It's definitely not as good as the other two, but I have to agree. It was far better than a number of movies I've seen recently (although admittedly, I don't see many movies). I liked it better than Wedding Crashers, 40 Year Old Virgin, and Must Love Dogs, which are the only new moveis I've seen in the past 6 months or so.

Speaking of Parker Posey, I assume you guys have seen The House of Yes then?My wife and I got this one out of the library and watched it Sat night. Not all that funny. Maybe it was in the 1980's when the play was written, but poking fun at Jackie Kennedy is as lame as Nixon jokes these days. And a whiff of incest also isn't all that shocking any more.

The movie is a bit like Lewis Black on Prozac. Clever, but without any energy you notice how vapid most of it is.

Some people will just never get the whole Spinal Tap/A Mighty Wind, etc., genre. I can't tell you how many times I've played Spinal Tap for someone and they look at me like I'm an idiot. You can tell it's going to be bad when they're not amused by a song like "Big Bottom" - it just goes downhill from there.
