I have assorted .avi clips that I'd like to add to iTunes (in turn to move them onto my iPod)... except, when I "add file", nothing ends up showing up. Do I need to convert the file to some type of special iPod file?

You've got to convert them to .mp4 files. Here's a program with basically 1 click conversion:
HandBrake (http://handbrake.fr/)

RE: Handbrake
Once you get it installed, simply fire up the program. On the top left, you'll see a source button. Use that to select the video file you want to convert. On the right under presets, expand the "Apple" category and select the Apple type you are converting to. Once done, you can either hit the "Start" button to convert that one file, or you can "Add to Queue" and do other files.
I use Videora Ipod Converter. It's fantastic.

So could you download youtube files as mp4 using something like zamzar, then play them on the ipod?

I've tried Handbrake and the Videora, and they both froze and stopped working. Could it possibly be the avi file (which plays perfectly)?

Yeah, with Videora the first error said it simply could not open the file so I restarted my laptop. Then, the next error code indicated the file was less than 1 kb and could not open. Except, it's actually 90 mb.

Hrm. That's odd. I think your porn is broken.
