My Short Film - 48 Hour Film Project

Has anyone competed in this?

It is a film festival / competition in which you have to write, film, and edit a short film (4-7 minutes) in just 48 hours. It's completely insane. And totally amazing!

I entered the Atlanta competition this year. I had a team of 19 cast and crew and I wrote, directed and co-edited the movie. It was a blast.

And I just found out that my film was selected to be seen included in the Atlanta "Best of" screening!

This was the first thing I ever directed, so I'm thrilled to get the recognition. It was crazy fun too, and am already talking with the team about the next project - so this will just be the first of many.

So I just wanted to share the news and give y'all a link to the film.

Heh. Thanks. The larp guy is me, by the way. And my wife is the blonde lead in it.

I should point out that we had to randomly draw the genre of the film out of a hat. I got suspense/thriller. Not really what I wanted, but did my best to make it work. The other teams had different genres.

And at the kickoff event at the beginning of the 48 hours, they told us the required elements that had to be in the movie (this way they can make sure you film the movie during the 48 hours).

The required elements we all had to use were:

Character: David Landeryou - School Principal
Line of Dialogue: "Let me know what you think."
Prop: Keys

So all of those things had to be in our movie.

I didn't know about the three elements you had to use when I watched it the first time. I thought the name "David Landeryou" was some kind of pun that went over my head, or maybe it was setting up that he was going to end every sentence with "you". That would have been very strange. Now that I know about the three elements, you did a fantastic job of working all three of them into your story. The film is a very impressive feat considering that you only had 48 hours to work with.

Good job KWhit. It's actually a lot of fun doing a project like that and it's great when you can coordinate that many people at once. Was it someone you knew that owned the bar?

A couple of years ago, a few of my co-workers at Apple and myself entered the Mill Valley Film Festival. It was a 12 hour turn around on it. We started at 9 in the morning and to have our films ready to show at 9PM the same day. We also had to use 3 elements as well.

Some friends of mine and I had talked about doing it at one point, but were just too busy to actually do it (unfortunately) - definitely looked like fun.

great job, and acting by the ladies was very good. if you want unsolicited advice - i would've had the principal say "David Landeryou" more naturally. like pumpy i thought i was missing something cuz he said it as if it was a special name. the way he said it it was as if he turned to face the camera and said "ah ha - that's one of the elements i needed to use...did you catch it?". there isn't anything special about that name as far as the story goes so i would've had him say it naturally. the fact that that's the only critique i have means the rest of the short film was really good. i'd like to see what you can do when you aren't being handcuffed to required elements and you can just make your own film. great job.

Reminds me of a project I was involved in a couple years ago. It was called the RPM Challenge, and the goal was to create and record a full length album in month of February.

Looks good. I need to check and see if any of my other Atlanta friends were involved in this. The lighting looked pretty good throughout and the audio was consistent, and those are often the most difficult things to get right.

I posted the movie on another site and that was the line that got a response there too. I think I like to give myself the better lines. I did the same thing in the plays I've written and performed in also.

Just kidding. Actually, I spent a TON of time putting together the team, scouting locations (yay for a bar to film in!), and planning out the schedule for the weekend. But once that was done, it's just 48 hours nonstop filmmaking. And then a lot of drinking at the wrap party after we turned it in.

The principal hadn't acted in forever (like since he was in high school), so I had to work with him a little bit. Overall, I'm happy with the performance he gave, but we had to work at it a little.

Good job. I've seen a lot of amateur short films in my time with no time constraints or creative restrictions that were 1/2 as good as this.

I look forward to seeing what you guys can do with more time/freedom/etc.
