So, how much loose change do you have sitting around

I have a container I keep on a kitchen counter where I throw my loose change. When I lived in California, this was the seed money I would take to Lake Tahoe for the slot machines. Since I now live in Texas, and in any event slot machines don't takes coins or tokens any more, the jar has filled up over the past 6 or so years.

I was curious, and decided to see how much was there. Instead of counting each and every coin, I did an estimate based on the weight of each type of coin. I had around $340 in pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters and dollar coins. I also had a bunch of Euro and Brit coins as well. Almost 100 Euro in coins, and around 80 Pounds as well. But you can't convert foreign coins in the US, so those will have to wait for another trip.

According to coincalc.com, my jar weighs 53.6 pounds which would be roughly $568.99

It is a 5 gallon jug that is filled about 1/4th of the way up. Basically been where I've tossed coins for about 15 years. I used to put a ton more coins in it years ago, hardly any make it in there these days thanks to credit cards/debit cards and hardly ever using cash.


Originally my goal was once it filled up use the money for a surprise vacation or something. No idea what I'll do now.

You guys are very patient. I hit the bank's handy coin machine (no Coinstar fees) when I save up around $10.

When I bartended I would never cash in my change at the end of the night, instead I put it all in an olive jar. Once a month I would cash it in and usually have close to $500 in change. It was a great way to save money without even knowing it.

We have one of those change jars with a counter (batter operated). I just drop the coins in one at a time and it keeps a running tab. My wife bought it after I emptied the last change jar for over $300.

Here's a handy tip: if you want to buy something on Amazon or at Barnes and Noble, for example, you can cash in your change at a Coinstar machine and receive 100% back (no fees) as long as you take your money as an Amazon or B&N gift code and not as cash.

I have a 5 gallon water ji that is completely full and another that is 2/3rds full. No pennies in either...not sure how much, I use it as my rainy day fund....dont wanna know.
