Probably so, but it's going to be all about the multi-player I think. This might finally break the MW2 stranglehold on the console here at my house (and a lot of other places too). How much staying power it will have once Black Ops is released is a different matter.

I think Obama needs to mandate a uniform control scheme for FPS games. Halo was screwing up my COD muscle memory.

If Obama could require mouse and keypad support for console FPS games he'd have my vote.

I haven't really played Halo since the first and second one. Enjoyed em, but got tired of them after awhile. The multiplayer was fucking great though. Decided to check out some reviews online tonight just to see what the consensus was early on and I am seeing quite a few "greatest Halo ever" and "the best multiplayer just got better" type reviews. I am intrigued.

Either the XB version is already being modded or the skill level gap between experienced & relative newcomer is considerably greater than it is for MW2.
When virtually every kill you see in 4p mode is a head shot, something doesn't seem quite right to this grumpy old man.

That crossed my mind. Reading the reviews had me intrigued to the point that I was thinking about renting it but with the amount of hardcore Halo players I thought it might not be worth my time.

FWIW, I'm at least occasionally competitive in Halo's version of free-for-all mode but anything with more than 2 player teams, I'm just a human target.
That's with a decent amount of time played on ODST and a little bit on Halo 3. I was expecting to fare much better with Reach since I played the demo of it a lot (compared to what I've played the previous versions).
No such luck.

A little Googling turns up what seems to be the source of the complaints:
the DMR is considerably overpowered.

You can't put me in that boat, son. I have beaten Halo and Halo 2 and played it some in MP.
Same old crap.

And a uniform controller as well.
I propose the uniform controller be a mouse and keyboard. Console controllers SUCK ASS! The end.

No, no, just let those of us who want to use a mouse and keyboard do so, then we can clean up on those using a gamepad.

Jetpacks, fun as hell.
Swat mode, getting head shot 10 times in like 2 minutes. FUCK YOU GAME DEVELOPERS.

swat has been my favorite game type since halo 2 but it has to be a nightmare to newcomers who have no idea whats going on on brand new maps

the DMR has been beefed up since the beta but it still is underpowered compared to the BR from halo 2/3.
its just that everyone is so damned good at this game now, people are making headshots with their eyes closed and their controllers upside down.

I didn't play 2, didn't play 3 very much, so that nuance was/is lost on me.

Not a bad description there. After a short late afternoon session that let me knock out my 3 Arena matches for the day, I played a couple more games with my son & another online friend last night ... I lasted two games before I quit, there's neither any fun nor any point in me being nothing more than cannon fodder.
I can hold my own in Battle Pit, with the similar skill preference turned on for matchmaking. Anything else, I'm just an albatross around the neck of whatever team gets stuck with me.
just dont lose encouragement yet. once all the super hardcore players level up, i imagine the game will be a little bit more balanced skill wise

Just finished the solo campaign and went to play the campaign in co-op and all I can say is, you've got to be fucking kidding me. Nothing but connection problems, my friend getting booted every single time. Sometimes as soon as we get into the game and sometimes about 5 minutes into it. How the fuck can they get multiplayer right on their previous games, but, this one is practically non existent.
Oh AND, I always have to turn down a games music so I can hear my friend through the head phones. I usually do that in the audio settings of a game. Welp, not in Halo Reach. There are no options to turn down the music. So, it's pretty much impossible to hear him when we are playing...the short minute or two before he gets booted.
Plus, figuring out the multiplayer options is worse than trying to figure out one of those rubics cubes that has 18 cubes to a side.

Figuring that someone else might find this info useful/helpful/interesting too, so I'll comment.

FWIW, only one dropped connection here so far in well over 100 multiplayer games. Maybe the problem is specific to the campaign mode (which I haven't played in MP), have you tried the other modes to see if you encounter similar problems?

Just gotta take it slow for a minute to understand the structure of these I think.
Online play centers around the "Matchmaking" option, and under that are various game type options. Among the major choices to be familiar with are
-- "Battle Pit", which is basically their Free-For-All mode.
-- "Firefight", which is 4-man teams vs waves of AI
-- "Arena", 2-man or 4-man teams PvP, ranked by performance into Leagues after 7 days of ranked play (min 3 matches/day). "Season" refers to the finite length of each season, expected to be around 30 days.
Then there are all of the team-oriented options, most of which I've never played.
Here's a decent overview of the various MP game types

(Be sure to look at pages 2 & 3 of this, those are where most of the types are described, Page 1 doesn't have a lot)

That was going to be our next step, but, it was getting late last night and we decided to call it quits for the evening. We are big co-op campaign fans, so that's why we spent so much time trying to get it to work.

We aren't really into playing against others, but, do know that the majority of players are into the PvP style of play and all the options for that makes sense. We would start a co-op campaign on the first mission and before we even touch down, the game would start lagging and then you would see our player names and a message below that saying, "Waiting for other players" with a timer ticking down from 1 minute. We have our game locked at 2 players max and set to invite only, so not sure why that message would even pop up. The forums at Bungie were completely useless, as it appears my friend and myself are the only ones that play the co-op campaign.

Dang. Good reading on the different multiplayer modes, but, nothing about the co-op campaign. I guess it is true that only my friend and I play the campaign in co-op mode.
Thanks for the help and the article Jon.
