Hello and welcome to my newest dynasty. This will show my attempt to play through The Movies. I have had it for years, and play I every so often. I always enjoy the first bit, but eventually get bored of the tedium that comes in the middle game, as your studio gets very involved.
I just picked up the expansion for the game, and want to give it my first spin in two-three years or so. I could play 20-30 years, or I could go deep – it just depends on my interest level.
In January, 1920, Braham Essex forms Gladiator Productions in a moderate sized lot near the rest of the competition. A small company at birth, in grows into one of the major houses in film making in Hollywood. This is its story:

You can see our studio’s crest on the flag by the entrance. I need to turn this into a real studio over the next few months.
The first thing I do is order the construction of a 5,000 Stage School to hire talent as actors, actresses, extras, and directors.
Then I need crew to build it. After a group of 6 people flocks to our set looking for work, I hire one as a janitor and two as builders.
While the builders move to the stage school to start building it, I order more buildings placed in my lot for construction – Crew Facility for hiring camera crew, production office for many things, and a casting office. When a script is ready, I move it to the casting office, and then assign a director, and actors there. They then rehearse the script until ready for shooting.
The production office is used when a film is done shooting and ready for release. There I can release films, review them, and check finances and other information.
I also order this area of the lot we are using to be sodded green and some pavement is added as well.
I then order a stage set built in the front center of the area.
After the Stage School is opened, I move a lady to the role of extra from the line formed outside of the staff building. Our first actress, although just an extra, is:
Consuela Nohpal, 21 years old
sabotai

I was thinking of starting a The Movies dynasty too. I'll be reading.

It is late January. I officially declare Gladiator Productions open for business, and four people come to my studio looking for major work. I hire all four. Meet:
Jo Townsend, 21, hired to be a movie director
William Loomis, 19, actor
Anna Grice, 21, actress
Kelly Ford, 20 year old, hired as director

Feb - Our first script arrives purchased for about nothing. It is called The Baggage Boy. As soon as the Casting Office is done, we can start. Our Crew Facility is built and I hire two camera crew from the line wanting work as janitors or builders. One came by, so we have one still in line.
Apr – The Casting Office is built and I move The Baggage Boy to pre-production. I need a male lead, so William Loomis is cast there. I need a director, and choose Jo because she has a tiny bit of comedy experience, which this film is.
May arrives and the set is built just before the pre-production of The Baggage Boy is done, so now is moves to shooting. My builders head off to finish the Production Office.
A line has formed outside the crew building. I create a second janitor, a two more crew, and another extra.
Extra Tom Overton, 21
June – The Production Office is complete

In July, a new set becomes available – the Wild West Saloon, and I order it built at the cost of 8k
Sept – The new set is built.
Oct – Here is my studio from an aerial view. You’ll note that I built many of my initial buildings along the bottom wall, and my sets towards the middle. I’ve left space in the bottom center for things like bathrooms, eating, and other important places for my people to hang.

That took about 5 minutes to do, but perhaps it will speed up in the future. Plus I need to make better quality videos, ick.

I order the construction of a snack van and a couple of portable toilets.
I can now build a Makeover Department, and I drop 7k on it.
The calendar year turns to 1921.
March hits and the Makeover Dept is ready. I send in my people one by one to get makeovers, to increase their self-image.
April sees another film hit our studio – Love Lasso. This romance is moved to the casting building now.
Love Lasso will have William Loomis as the male lead, and Kelly Ford will direct
In June, the movie begins shooting after rehearsal and pre-production finishes.
Several new sets are now available for building, so I order them constructed. They are:
Rural – Musty Cellar
Sci-Fi Bridge 1
Wild-West Desert
The last one is one if the very large sets you will typically get for outdoor scenes. The first is very small, and easily fits in, and the second is of medium size. I fit the first two around the central set area I’ve been working on.
I spend 17k on the starship bridge directly inside of the stage. I order the Cellar set to its right (5k). Finally, I order the Wild West Desert in one of the corners of our lot, at a cost of 7k
I hire another builder.
In September, I only have 17k left in the bank. I need to get some money from Love Lasso.

In Feb, I increase the salary of my four stars by 500 each
I then drop 6k on a Basic Script Office.
I start sending my stars out to practice in empty lots to increase their skills in various areas.
In April, the Scriptwriting Office is complete and I hire two scriptwriters. I have them both start working on a horror script.
Jun – I hire 22 year old Jon Whitfield as an extra.
I have to build another snack van and port-a-potty because our demand is too much.
Sept – Our script – The Witching Park, is ready for casting. I cast Kelly Ford as director and Anna Grice as the lead. Anna was working on horror a lot and has some ability in it now.

I order our scriptwriters to focus on a comedy film next.
Nov – Our film is ready to begin shooting,
Jan 1923 – Our next script, Ship of Dolts, is ready for casting, and I move it to the Casting Office. Jo will be directing and William starring.
I order a sci-fi script written

Two months later I greenlight the horror film Prehistoric Dawn, and put our normal horror team in charge of it.
Our studio reaches two star status, one of the three things needed for the next achievement. The other two are having a two star movie and a two star star.
Now that we have a nice parcel of cash, I am using my time to jack up my stars’ abilities on the five genres. Ideally, I want each actor to be great at two and good at a third genre, and each director great at two.
The script The Walnut Crack’d is done, and I order my script writers to focus on another horror script, entitled Deadbeater.
The next month (April) P Dawn starts shooting.
The next month, I start casting The Walnut Crack’d, and star the team of Jo and William again.
In June, Deadbeater is done and my staff work on another romance film.
After making 138k for us, it’s time to archive Defenders of the Fort.
In July, The Walnut Crack’d is now shooting
Sept – TVs are now on made. Scifi Pictures are up, everything else is down.

The next month, our newest scifi script – The Infernal Combustion Engine is ready. I order Major Pink to start shooting.
March sees our research unlock a wild west pack and I spend 23k to build a WW Jail set and 7k on a WW Traveling vehicle set. I move our researchers to Cult Packs.

The 1930 awards have arrived! There are now 6 studios. I expect to win two of the four awards. Let’s go.
The first award is the Highest Charting Star, and Anna Grice wins for us, giving us our first major award. The horror and scifi actress has had 5 films released since the last awards ceremony, and has definitely been good for us. She will be harder to displease and more effective for the next five years.
While we are one of the three finalists for Highest Charting Studio, we do not win. We’re currently ranked 3 outta 6. Creamboat Creations wins
We win Most Prestigious Studio Lot. That’s great, because the prize is increased research in the next five years.
Creamboat Creations has the highest charting movie, and we are not even in the running.
Highest Climbing Studio will be the newest award next time.
With two of four awards, and an nomination for a third, we have a really good night tonight at the second Awards Ceremony.
We now have a two star star and only need a 2 star movie to get the next achievement.

January, 1930, Where’s My Baby? Is released
It cost 32.5k to make, and again, just missed out on 2 stars. It was also a script I modified.
This was our 15th film

It is my very first 2 star film – excellent! We have reached our second milestone, and I unlock a Forest Set. I order it built. Our next one we need 2 awards, which we have, 5 2 star films, and 1 mill in the bank.
June 31 – We are officially in a depression. Comedy and Romance are up, Action and Horror down.
Later in the month we unlock a sci fi pack. I order the Sci Fi Corridor set built.
Next month I greenlight The Gutter Dwellers, a horror film with a script almost 2 stars. I cast:
Mark Smart in his first starring role
Anna Grice as a star
Director Kelly Ford
We discover a suburban pack, and I order the construction of a Suburban Living Room set.
I hire another janitor and builder
Aug sees shooting begin on The Gutter Dwellers
Sept sees a script, Tenderspirit, finish. I order it to begin casting and cast Jo, William and Meghan.

Jan – We have a million and reach our second milestone. At 303k, it is time to archive Major Pink Takes a Holiday. At one time, this was as high as the 6th highest grossing movie ever, but now it’s 16.
Currently Two-Fingered Pete is #3 and Megavolution is #6.
I hire a 9th camera crew
Stars can now get entourages. I can take an unemployed person, and move them to help out a star. It takes from my queue for jobs though.
Two months later, with a revenue of 270k, it’s time to archive Where’s My Baby?
A two star script, comedy, Douglas Duckmeat is ready and I order it prepared. Pete Petrov will direct with Tamsin and new hire Anthony starring. We start shooting in early June
I give Anna Grice an entourage.
Sept – We unlock a war pack 7 years early. Here is what it comes with of note:
Smoke in my scenes
The War – Bombed Street set
A lot of costumes, props, and backgrounds

I remember this game as being a real disappointment, but I never played it after the expansion pack came out. How much did it improve gameplay, Abe?
It doesn't for a while. Most of the things it adds kick in after 1960, and it adds a start feature that takes you to there rather than build up your studio. I don;t know how they'll play out yet.
I think the game, like all Peter Molyneux games really, bites off too much, because it gets too tedious down the road to my mind, but right now, playing it is fun.

We have now released our 5th 2 star+ film and meet our achievements. I can now write the next level of scripts if I build a new script writing office.
Our next targets are a three star movie, star, studio and to release 15 films. We have the last two.
I give Kelly Ford a entourage.
We unlock another pack and can now build:
Cheap trailers
Large Restrooms
New ornaments

William Loomis, Kelly Ford and Anna Grice are my three biggest stars, all in the top 5. I greenlight a scifi picture, entitled Chemical Jody which will team up all three for a mega star pic.
I hire my 10th film crew
Jan 1934 arrives. 314.5k y Two-Fingered Pete was great, but its time to retire it.

Just making a lot of places a bit more appealing on the eyes. I don’t want to lose the Best Studio Lot award this year – the extra research speed is awesome.

The 3035 Awards arrive:
Highest Charting Star sees us win again for Anna Grice. Yay!
We also win for Highest Charting Studio. For the next five years, we will pay our stars and staff only half, and they won’t notice!
We also won for Highest Climbing Studio, since we went from 3 to 1. For the next five years, my stars will suffer no negative effects to drinking and eating. We won’t see that award again, and I wasn;t sure we’d get it this time either, but we did!
We grab the trophy for Most Prestigious Studio Lot as well, as expected.
Lionear Productions wins the Highest Charting Movie, beating out our #2 film.
We won four of five – an impressive feat.
The next ceremony will hand out an award for Most Prolific Star.

Our three major stars are literally 1-2-3 in terms of ranking
In April, Stop that Elephant is ready for shooting. With a revenue of 387k it’s time to archive #9 film of all time Tenderspirit
Since my salaries are now half price, I jack up salaries to the maximum level to make everyone happy.
In June we unlock a pack with a restaurant for my people. I build it.
I give Jo Townshend an entourage.
In July I begin rehearsal for a 3 star script, horror, called Goodnight Barry. It will star:
Direction by Kelly Ford
Anna Grice
Tamsin Carr
Mark Smart
It will take a while (9 scenes) to shoot.
It starts shooting in August. 297k for Douglas Duckmeat, but no one is watching it anymore and it gets retired.
In Sept, I start rehearsal on a 3 star romance film called The Marriage. Cast:
Director – Jo Townshend
William Loomis
Vicky Vance
Anthony Orchin
As of now, all of our stars, film crew, extras are all in movies.
A month later, The Marriage starts filming
