I thought the situation was pretty contrived. I believe if they did this in a predominantly black area the narrative could have been painted that blacks don't care. I thought it was interesting but I am well aware that they were trying to achieve that result.

I actually like this show it was on. I remember watching it with my wife when ABC aired it. After watching it, I told her if we ever have to steal bikes, she was doing it.

Yeah, I remember this show as well. But this should be no surprise to those that live it.

One incident in Phoenix, which is somewhat funny in recall, but pretty sad was when I was in the bookstore with my wife and daughter Larissa. Larissa was about 3 at the time and she decides she wants to pull the books from the shelves. I told her that if she does it again, we are going to wait in the car.

Well, of course, she does it again.

So I pick her up and walk out of the book store as she is wailing and, of course, kicking. Well, seeing this, about half the store starts following me, stopping short of the entrance ti watch me from the windows as I head for the car. One lady had a cell phone ready in her hand. I assume they thought I was kidnapping a child or was about to give her a tune up or something, considering Larissa is lighter skinned than myself, and even moreso when she was little.

It wasn't until I strapped her in her seat and sat in the driver's seat for a couple of minutes before they dispersed.

In all seriousness, I find the most interesting part how easily people are tricked into helping steal things as long as you give a plausible explanation, regardless of race.

I think that's a combination of people want to believe the best in people and people don't want to risk a negative confrontation because, to them, the upside is limited but the downside is huge (lawsuit, arrested if they're wrong, etc).

About the 90s when the lawsuit culture took hold- you combined that with ever growing cities and more than a healthy helping of the 80s social darwinism, which is basically just selfishness all dressed up, and that make us know less and less about your neighbor and people just have seemed to stop caring about anyone else in the world. "Do what's best for you" is the mantra.
