Chicken Nuggets Are Made From This Pink Goop (http://gizmodo.com/5654066/chicken-nuggets-are-made-from-this-pink-chicken-goop)

This is mechanically separated chicken. Chickens are turned into this goop so we can create delicious chicken nuggets and juicy chicken patties. It's obscenely gross and borderline alien but it's not going to stop me from eating nuggets. They're too good.

The process works a little something like this:

There's more: because it's crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia, soaked in it, actually. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be refalvored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color.

Yeah, that's just disgustin. But I can't shake my roots. I'm a chicken nugget fan (and all around fat food guy) for life.

This is funny, considering that people didn't like the 'dark meat' nuggets and that's why there is only 'white meat' nuggets now. Even though the dark meat nuggets tasted better and were more juicy.

I remember back in the 1970s going on a field trip to a place that made hot dogs. Saw the same kind of goop but I don't recall it being pink. I know they added food coloring to hot dogs (and bologna and other shit like that) but maybe chicken is different.

I said it starts as a slurry. It's formed and turned into a solid, then sliced to make it look like real meat.

My firm does franchising work for Yum brands and a several other fast food franchise owners, and I've heard some stories that make me wish I hadn't heard them.

Arby's roast beef starts as a slurry.

So does plenty of lunch meat at supermarkets. If your turkey/roast beef/crab has air bubbles in it, that's a pretty good sign you're eating meat-doh.

I thought McNuggets, at least the ones from MacDees was real pieces of chicken cut into cubes.. I didn't know it looked like that with chemicals and what not.

I don't eat hot dogs or bologna.. I don't eat McNuggets either, but the kiddos do.

you would certainly know better than me...but I was under the impression that Arby's actually used full beef roasts to slice and make their sandwich meat....guess not.

thesloppy
10-04-2010, 09:35 PM
If I had to guess about other things that were likely made out of slurry:

Most of the meats at Subway/Quiznos/any-sandwich-shop.
Any chicken or fish sandwich at any fast food place.
Any sort of turkey-bastardization....turkey-bacon, turkey-ham, turkey-roni.
Half the ham/turkey/chicken in the supermarket.
Spam (obviously).
Any sort of meat that comes in a can.

Well, for whatever it's worth, a slurry is only half-a-degree removed from the finest sausage and other charcuterie.

stevew

I wonder if there is a pattern to mcnuggets. Like if you have six nuggets you don't realize there are only 8 or so shapes. But if you had a 50 piece you could do molding separation by shape.

Tigercat
10-04-2010, 10:06 PM
Back in the day of dark and white meat mcnuggets, there were only two shapes. I used to like the more rounded ones much better. I guess some kind of ridiculous psychological thing like the people who like certain colored M&Ms better.

That is true, to some extent. Fine sausage is an art form, using quality meat and spices. I think it's all the additives in a slurry that makes it more artificial.

Subs - yes

Fish definitely but I don't know if it's the same process or they just grind up the whole fish into a paste (they can't cut or grind bones for the meat slurry)

I've wondered about the deli packaging. Seems rather expensive if they cut a center piece all of the time. Guess not.

Canned meat, yes, except fish?

This one seems tough....some things are pretty obvious, anything marked 'processed' or cases where the 'roasts' are bigger than the animal in question, but if it's sliced & packaged who knows where/what it came from?

I used to know an organic farmer who made the best hot dogs. His dogs were grey(like Roethlisburger's penis), but they were so tasty. I wish I would have had a chance to work some on his farm, but I'm pretty sure he was into large scale weed distribution and I didn't want to get in trouble.

I ordered the 50 pc. McNuggets special for $9.99 back during the Winter Olympics. I was in McNugget heaven until around piece #41 or #42. But that close to the end you have to finish. My digestive system took a few days to recover from that event.
