Washington referees may face ban for charity pink whistles - Prep Rally - High School* - Yahoo! Sports (http://rivals.yahoo.com/highschool/blog/prep_rally/post/Washington-referees-may-face-ban-for-charity-pin?urn=highschool-279246)

There must be more going on there, like maybe at least one of the ref involved was already on the outs with the guy running the show and this was used as an excuse to be able to show who "has the largest c***".

To sumarize. A group of refs doing a high school game used pink whistles and donated their game checks to a breast cancer fund. Now they are being suspended and not going to be allowed to do the playoff games (falls in the suspension range). The reason being that they violated uniform rules with the pink whistles.

The excuse given is "it sets a bad example for the kids since they were allowed to berak the rules." I am pretty sure that not one kid on the field was looking at the whistles and thinking... "hey, they are violating the uniform rule."

Their uniform rule specifies the color of the whistle? I thought I was picky but damn.

My crew has been using pink whistles for the entire month of October and nothing has been said.

Well, then...I just can't value your opinion anymore on these officiating questions. I mean, someone who can't even follow simple rules...

Or maybe it was a pissing contest of a different sort ... checked out one of the additional links in the story & found this

According to officials' commissioner Todd Stordahl, pink whistles are a violation of the uniform code. "The norm is black, and I think every official would agree with that," he said.

Stordahl says it isn't about the color, it's about procedure. He says the group didn't follow proper procedure, and defied an order not to use them when the state said "no."

"There's one person who has the authority to make that decision, and it's not PNFOA." Stordahl says he already turned down three other referee groups that wanted to use the whistles.

But PNFOA argues that it's not a violation of the uniform dress code, as there is no rule or policy that governs the color of the refs' whistles.

So when the state said the entire group would be suspended from working playoff games if the pink whistles were used, they stood their ground.

I hope this asshole Stordahl gets cancer tomorrow. Is that a little harsh?

I understand this is probably as much about territorial ground as anything the refs did wrong, and this kind of shit happens in workplaces around the country every single day... but IT'S A FUCKING CHARITY FOR BREAST CANCER. He seems to take pleasure in the fact that he turned down 3 other groups that wanted to use the whistles.

Never mind that it's the worst possible message to be sending these kids. "Don't bother doing the right thing, because somebody will find a way to screw you and use it against you"

The extent that grown ass men will go to to ruin high school and youth sports is fucking unbelievable......It's not like they came out dressed in pink thongs like Borat or something.

Someone needs their sense of self importance checked just a tad!

This is what it looks like to me.

Why pick this as an issue to stand your ground on? Do you have some pet peeve about every freaking body jumping on the Pink for breast cancer band wagon? Are you annoyed that it is now stretching out for an entire month? I mean I understand people taking those positions, but really to prevent someone from participating in a mitzvah(for lack of a better word)? You've got to be a special kind of small minded for that.
