i think there's a stigma attached to white rb's coming out of hs. a recruiter will look at a white rb and want him to switch to lb or safety.

Is there any evidence that small running backs get injured more often than large running backs? Wouldn't physics indicate the opposite? A squirrel can fall 30 feet out of a tree onto pavement and run away like nothing happened. Danny Woodhead is somewhat bigger than a squirrel, yes, but you'd think smaller, quicker guys might have some advantages.

My Hyundai would not stand up well to a Hummer.
If they both ran into a brick wall though, there would be much more impact on the Hummer. Assuming they're going the same speed, and not accounting for safety features, etc. Just looking at the size and weight of both.

The Lions play Buffalo this week. Drew Stanton will be their starting QB. Zac Robsinon, signed today, could be the #2.
Like last year wehn they faced the Rams, the Lions will give Buffalo their first win of the season and, once again, will ensure that they remain the only 0-16 team in the history of the league for at least one more year.
Awesome!

I am still baffled as to why the NFL Network has such a hard time producing a professional looking live broadcast of their own games. While they have improved somewhat since the first year they started airing games, the games aired and produced on the NFL Network still have a very second-rate look and feel to them (Millen and whoever is with him in the booth do not help).
It's surprising, since the NFL is, in all other aspects, so great at marketing and packaging their product. Their NFL Films division, for example, is fantastic. But when it comes to a live broadcast of their own product, I find the NFL really, really lacking.
I still find this to be true.
The production value of this game sucks.
The volume of the announcers is way too loud and the volume of the on-filed action and crowd is too low. Something is off there.
You throw Millen and Theisman into the mix and the game is almost unwatchable.
Get it together, NFL. Seriously.

Baltimore obviously calls a timeout, as the clock stopped. Millen's response to the injury on the field post clock stoppage: "That will cost them a timeout." And then Millen calls for a time runoff on a penalty, again even though the clock wasn't running when the penalty happened.
He is as big an idiot on camera as he was before the Lions hired him. Still can't believe how many NFL "experts" claimed it was a good hire back then.

I didn't know whether to put this in the "lock of the week" thread or what, but...holy crap is Theismann as bad as ever. I mean, announcers usually don't ruin a game for me, and I hardly watched much of the game last night at all, but in the bits and pieces I saw, he clearly wrong on just about every call or opinion he made - placement of the ball on the Ryan slide and the lack of a penalty; the catch on the sideline that was reviewed during Atlanta's last TD drive; the "they didn't score too soon" comment; and then there was another one in the 1st half, I think, where he said something like, "They'll definitely run the ball here," and it was a pass. Just an absolute buffoon.
And of course, Matt MIllen is from the Madden/Maguire school of analysis - "Watch this RIGHT HERE!" Thanks, Millen. Perhaps you could be a seeing eye dog for the rest of your life and spare us from having to listen to you (full disclosure - I'm a native Michigander).

18 of 34 for 124 yards isn't exactly opening up much of anything. Johnson had 117 yards, but he doesn't really need Moss in order to do that.

In light of the Jags/Texans ending, I have to post what Bill Simmons wrote in his "Picks" column earlier this week:
The Law of Gus Johnson is sweeping the nation: He's called four straight weeks of games that were genuinely exciting (Jets-Lions, Bills-Chiefs, Bengals-Falcons, Chiefs-Texans) and this battle between two David Lee teams (all offense, no defense) looks like No. 5.
I keep mentioning the Law of Gus without ever really defining it, so let's do it right now. If Gus Johnson is calling an NFL game, the odds quintuple that (A) the lead will change hands in the fourth quarter; (B) someone will complete a long pass in a big moment that will make Gus' voice hit an octave only dogs can hear; and (C) the game will go into overtime or at least come damned close. It seems impossible that the mere presence of an announcer would alter the course of the game, but here's my theory: I think God sits in his Man Cave on Sundays and says, "Which game is that Gus Johnson calling? I get a kick out of that guy. I think I'll make his game exciting and see if he completely loses his mind."

So leave Frazier in charge until there is a new CBA. He's got to pay the buyout no matter when he fires him, do it now and maybe get some more fans to the last few games and more public support for a new stadium that he's asking for state money for.
And hopefully Zygi is watching his beloved Giants get killed by the Cowboys and thinking that maybe his players would play better if they weren't playing for a coach they hated.

Andy Reid like clock management from the Cowboys probably cost them at least a FG at the end of the half. They let a good 20 seconds run off the clock at midfield (from ~30 seconds to go to 10 seconds) and the half ended while they had a time out left.

That'd be great, but unless Zygi is planning on building it himself I doubt it will be a true outdoor stadium. Best outcome is probably a retractable roof with a way to grow grass like Arizona has, no way the state puts that much money into a building that won't be able to host the Super Bowl and Final Four.

I'm not sure what game these announcers are watching, but that throw by Troy Smith into the endzone was awful. It was well behind Crabtree and into double coverage. What's incredible is that Crabs came down with it.

Yeah, watch it again. Crabs came back and reached across his body to catch it. If he hadn't done that it would have hit one of the two defenders right in the chest. Troy is making some impressive throws, but he's mixing them in with equally bad throws. I think the announcers are just drinking some Troy kool-aid. If Alex were in there right now, we'd be hearing the 5th verse of "we want Carr" by now. 12 for 23? No touchdowns and one fumble? 0 for 10 on third down conversions?

For the record, I have always said that Alex Smith was nothing more than a backup QB. My argument is that Troy Smith is, at best, also a backup QB. The thing that bothers me is how so many fans get overexcited about anybody who isn't Alex, regardless of whether he's actually a better option.
In re: to the first TD that was called back, you'll see the defender that was covering VD give up as soon as the ball was snapped (in other words, Davis may, or may not have been covered it if weren't for the penalty). In re: to the second TD that was called back, as mentioned before the throw left quite a bit to be desired. It was a fantastic play by Crabs though.

Todd Haley not shaking McDaniels hand and accusing him of running up the score has to be one of the funniest NFL things I've seen in awhile.
Denver went up 35-0 and were outscores the rest of the way 29-14. In the second half, Denver passed the ball on 13 of 31 total plays. Haley threw the ball on 40 of 49 plays, went for two 2 point conversions and tried an onside kick.
OMG Todd, Denver played hard through the third quarter? You mean the team that got lit up for 59 against the Raiders was a little worried their D might collapse? Really.
McDaniels is a first class jerk most of the time, but Haley is WAY off the path here. He didn't prepare his team and they were lit up. Look in the mirror.

I think/fear that the Steelers' injuries are going to catch up to them. Both lines are destroyed and there are still 7 games left. The fact that we have enough crummy teams left will probably let us sneak into the playoffs, but it kind of stinks that, in an uncapped year, we chose to load up on LB and WR depth (both in the draft and in FA), rather than boosting up our offensive and defensive lines.
Next draft, I seriously hope we just draft the top rated offensive linemen (on our board) in rounds 1-3.

I agree. I am a big Dallas fan and get tired of the media ALWAYS focusing on Dallas. I haven't heard a lot about Jay Cutler dating this chick (Cavalleri or whoever) from some chick show while he throws pick after pick. I'd prefer defensive backs, simply because I don't think Big Ben can function under normal blocking arrangements anyways. He still eats the ball for forever.

I thought Pouncey's brother is coming out this year? I don't know how great he is, but it would be cool to have brothers on the O-Line.
We tried this in Philly with the Andrews sisters...careful what you wish for.

I guess Favre felt something Saturday putting on a shirt so, he is going to talk to the Doc this week about it.
Obama should bring him on. Sure looks like Favre knows how to plan an exit strategy.

I just saw that cheap ass hit from Aqib Talib on Jimmy Claussen. I hope he gets fined heavily. I don't like Claussen at all, but you should know better than to launch helmet first into a defenseless player. Hopefully they sit down Talib for a game.

That's just... odd.
So a guy you don't trust to run a 2 minute offense, you trust enough to give $40M to?

Well, maybe with all of his new found monies, McNabb can either: (1) hire a tutor to help him get a better grasp of Shanahan's 2 minute offense, or (2) hire a presonal trainer to help him get in better shape to rune Shanahan's 2 minute offense.

He's already 34 and nowhere near somebody who looks to be hanging around for 5 years. $40 million of it guaranteed. That's a robbery at it's best.

Biggest winner after McNabb in this? Vick.
Or maybe I should say Vick's creditors?

I like the suggestion sent in by a Bill Simmons reader to nickname Hillis "Avalanche." He's white and runs people over.

I bet Al Davis is even laughing at Snyder.
