I, my brother , and father all served during different war times and saw combat.........I am now on the civilian side and received a very poignant Vets Day message from our CEO that I wanted to share with you since it sums up alot of things for me in general about all the others who have served or had loved ones who served.
I’d like to tell you about a Saturday night, one week ago. My wife Betsy, son Hollis, older daughter Tay and I had gone to a restaurant to celebrate Hollis’ 30th birthday. An hour or so into the evening, a man at a nearby table stood, caught the attention of the dining room, and asked all there to join him in a toast to the brave men and women of our armed services, whose service far from home and in difficult conditions permitted us to enjoy so pleasant an evening.
Later as we were leaving, Betsy and I stopped by his table to thank him for his words. Here’s what we learned: his son, a Marine serving in Afghanistan, had been shot in the head one week earlier. The young man is expected to live, but his father felt all too keenly the risks his son had taken to serve our country, to preserve our peace and freedom at home. Of course, Betsy and I were moved…sobered by the young Marine’s service…and impressed by the price shared by his family.
On Veterans’ Day, it’s a good time to remember how much we owe to those who serve, or who have served, in our armed forces. Just nine days ago, we enjoyed a privilege rare in history and still denied to many around the world – the right to change our government, peacefully, by voting. As we cast our votes for the candidates and platforms of our choice, we were able to do so only because our nation has been sustained by generations of brave men and women.
Today we also remember with special gratitude those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The surviving families of those veterans deserve our thanks and our support. It’s why our chief administrative officer (and himself an Army veteran of Viet Nam) will make a special visit next week to the national headquarters of TAPS, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. This remarkable organization provides support across the nation to the surviving spouses and children of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who have died in the line of duty. Miles will present TAPS with a check for more than $550,000 raised in our Aimco Cares Charity Golf Classic… through the generosity of our teammates, business partners and sponsors.
As you go about your business today, I encourage you to think of, and to thank, family members, co-workers, and neighbors who accepted the call to military service. Let us remember, too, those no longer with us who saw duty to country as more precious than life itself. These men and women, and all who serve or have served, deserve our lasting respect and deepest appreciation.
Be well and
Best,
