When I play FOF I like to use a different set up than the way the NFL is. I’m a geographer so I like to have teams based in the largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas. This means that Los Angeles gets a team, and San Francisco and Oakland are combined into one; what I call Bay Area. Also, River-San Bernardino-Ontario becomes another new team that I call Inland Empire. I also add Portland and San Antonio at the expense of New Orleans and Jacksonville. Even though northern New Jersey is part of the New York City statistical area, I break it up due to its sheer size; so I keep the game’s New Jersey and New York teams. And because Green Bay is just way too small I move the team to Milwaukee. (Some statistical anomalies exist: Buffalo, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Charlotte aren’t in the top 32 cities. I didn’t use Orlando, Las Vegas, San Jose and Columbus because I thought that California, Florida and Ohio would be over-represented and Vegas just didn’t work for me.)
Also as part of this alternate universe, I made up a story that the Rooney’s decide that Goodell is a ginormous tool so they take the Steelers and create a new league. So the Steelers are the only original NFL name I keep. So this is the set up I use:
AL North:
Indianapolis Racers
Cincinnati Centaurs
Pittsburgh Steelers
Cleveland Knights
AL East:
Buffalo Soldiers
Baltimore Bombers
Boston Militiamen
New Jersey Guardians
AL South:
Houston Heroes
Kansas City Pioneers
Miami Sharks
San Antonio Cavalry
AL West:
Denver Druids
Los Angeles Quakers
Portland Lumberjacks
San Diego Surfers
NL North:
Chicago Champions
Detroit Devils
Milwaukee Bikers
Minnesota Minotaurs
NL East:
Carolina Cavaliers
New York Golems
Philadelphia Fighters
Washington Warriors
NL South:
Atlanta Lords
Dallas Ranchers
St. Louis Archers
Tampa Bay Brigands
But yesterday for some reason I decided that it would be neat instead of having two conferences with four divisions at the four points of the compass, have an East and West conference. (In my alternate universe then I could explain that to keep cost down, the teams should be close together.) So if I decide to restart my game, this is the way I’m going to set things up (AFC becomes East Conference; NFC becomes West conference):
East North:
Baltimore
Buffalo
Pittsburgh
Washington
East East:
Boston
New Jersey
New York
Philadelphia
East South:
Atlanta
Carolina
Miami
Tampa Bay
East West:
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Detroit
Indianapolis
West Central:
Arizona
Denver
Inland Empire
San Diego
West East:
Chicago
Milwaukee
Minnesota
St. Louis
West South:
Dallas
Houston
Kansas City
San Antonio
West West:
Bay Area
Los Angeles
Portland
Seattle
So if you’re still reading this I’ll finally get to my ultimate point. Some of the team nicknames I just don’t like. Some might be leftovers from the default FOF settings. A lot of them came about because I was having a Dungeons and Dragons relapse around the same time I went on my census tangent. If you are from a place other than the places listed under Names I like, please offer up an appropriate alternative.
Names I like:
Pittsburgh Steelers (my favorite team in real life)
Arizona Anarchists (the teams I play in FOF)
Indianapolis Racers
Los Angeles Quakers
Portland Lumberjacks
Milwaukee Bikers
Seattle Samurai
Buffalo Soldiers
St. Louis Archers
Names I just don’t like and would accept suggestions on:
Kansas City Pioneers
San Antonio Cavalry
Boston Militiamen
New Jersey Guardians
Dallas Ranchers
Tampa Bay Brigands
Bay Area Rangers
Inland Empire Troopers
Thank you, and good night.
