It's snowed 1.5" in my yard in the past hour and everything is already closed down here for Monday (and probably Tuesday). They are expecting 4-6" of snow around here, which would be the most I've ever seen. Here's to hoping my power stays on. Hope all the ATLians resisted the urge to buy 30 gallons of water in preparation.

This.

This, this. I have a little over 2 inches on the ground now. It spits heavy flakes, and then sleety-pelts for a while. They are expecting even heaver snow later tonight, then turning into freezing rain by daybreak. With the temp not expecting to hit 30, it looks really bad for significant ice. Rough couple of days ahead.

Btw, the snow started about 4 hours ahead of schedule, and much heavier at the start. Interstates are already covered in snow and ice, and many are already backed up heavy from people sliding and spinning out.

I-20 Shut down in parts, 285/85 all lanes blocked. And some guy honking his horn next door because his car is stuck in an intersection. Should be fun.

Right around 2 inches here in Athens now, didn't start until a few minutes before 10pm. That part is fine & dandy, it's the shift to freezing rain expected to occur sometime in the next few hours that has me seriously concerned. Local EMC (which isn't my provider but still) has been warning customers to expect power outtages of up to 4 DAYS if the predictions were accurate ... right now they look pretty well on target.

We're expected to get less snow than at Christmas in Raleigh, but there's a significant ice chance this time that wasn't there then. Estimates are for a couple of inches of snow late tomorrow before it shifts over to whatever frozen precip decides to fall. Whether that's sleet or freezing rain is anyone's guess at this point. The weather people around here have been all over the place in terms of forecasting this which pretty much means they haven't got a clue. I'm expecting probably an inch or two of snow and then a nice crusty layer of ice in the form of some sleet, but mostly freezing rain. We're on the northeast side of Raleigh and the snow amounts should be heavier south and west with this storm, which means it'll transition to icy stuff before it has a chance to accumulate much in the way of snow.

I'm thinking I may be bailing out of work a bit early tomorrow and then am undecided about Tuesday depending on how everything plays out. I've got a 4x4 so getting around on thoroughfares isn't going to be a big issue. Getting up and down my inclined driveway is something else, though. At least I've got a garage so I'm not needing a jackhammer to scrape anything off the windshield if I have to go anywhere on Tuesday.

Came down pretty heavy here in Stone Mountain around 9:30 or so. Reminded me of winters at home a bit. Right now, there's nothing coming down.

It'd be a great day if I was off tomorrow. Unfortunately, I work from home more than I do from my office, so it'll be business as usual.

Did a ton of research here...it was not the cheapest (by a decent margin) but well worth it.
Actually if you get serious let me know, I have a good friend in NW GA that is a generator specialist, he mainly does commercial/large projects but I think he does som homs or at worst would know who to recommend locally to help you out price wise.

North Charleston, Charleston County.

Ice on Don Holt bridge. Police escorting cars over
bridge one at at time.

For those who have been here, the Don Holt is the bridge across the Cooper River heading from I-26 to the Sullivan's/Isle Of Palm/Mt. Pleasant area. It spans quite some distance, and is probably 80 feet or so above the water. Makes complete sense that it would be one of the first places to ice. But one car at a time??? Why not just close it??? They'll close it when the wind gets over 40mph or so...

Yeah, Grantdawg, looks like they underestimated the ice here. We have a quarter inch or so on all the trees, and it's still coming down. Our entire development (about 8 subdivisions) is pretty much clear-cut, and mostly has buried lines, so I'm not particularly concerned about power for us, but I suspect this is gonna suck for some parts of the Lowcountry.

Do they even have plows for residential streets in ATL? I know that in DFW, there were only trucks that would sand bridges and overpasses, and that was about the extent of winter weather machinery.

Having lived in both Atlanta and Massachusetts, 4 inches of snow/ice in Atlanta > 1 foot in Mass.

For the amount of time that 4 inches will shut down Atlanta, it would probably take like 4 feet of snow hitting Massachussets (maybe even more). Problem is Georgia just doesn't have the equipment to get rid of it. So you either go drive on an ice skating rink, or just sit at home and enjoy the days off :)

The snow has barely amounted to anything here. Just too dry in our area, so it kept evaporating as it moved in. Finally started falling about 5 PM, but has pretty much turned into a mix in the last couple of hours. Still some snow, but it's mostly sleeting right now. Still expected to turn into freezing rain or drizzle before it's over with, so we'll have a dusting of snow, a crusting of sleet, and then a nice little glaze of ice over all of it by tomorrow morning. However, it's been a rather pitiful storm compared to the hype that had been preceding it. If you were inside of an arc in NC drawn by I-95 and I-40, it was a pretty good snowfall, but along and past that line it hasn't amounted to a whole lot.

Somewhat the same boat here. My driveway's got 1/8" ice on it right now, with no breaks in it that could provide decent traction. I've seen one car on my street this morning, so I think if I could make it down my driveway, I would be okay, but it's the getting down part that's the problem. Even in a 4x4, I think I'd be skating some going down to the street. Might be even more fun getting back up.

I thought Wake County was being awfully optimistic that they'd only need a two-hour delay this morning after hearing the sleet falling like it did last night.

School district here is taking a ton of flak. Every other school district had called school today by 6AM. By then, we had about an inch, but the counties west of us already had 3-5'' and it seemed like that would hit us between 6-11. Our school district didn't make the call till nearly 7, when most parents were preparing to put kids on buses, and some teachers made struggled to make it to buildings (by 7, there was easily 2 inches and roads were completely covered). Our district has done this in the past, canceling school for flooding once only after on bus got stuck and had to backtrack. I ended up at work that day, one of 3 that made it, only to take a 10 mile detour to find a way home.

What a strange school district I work for.

That does sound odd. Everywhere I have lived, School districts usually error on the side of overly cautious for fear of legal liability if even one student was hurt on the way to school on a questionable weather day.

I haven't heard of too many districts really pushing the envelope in the other direction.

It warmed up just enough (near freezing) to clear the driveway and the street, but that should refreeze overnight. Still, it'll only be a superficial freezing as opposed to the thin ice rink I woke up to this morning. At least I got a day off out of it (though it comes out of my vacation time because while my office was pretty well shut today, company HQ in Maryland was open, so that technically meant my office was open anyway--the Maryland office is typically operating on normal hours except in case of nuclear attack on DC in which case they might consider their options).

With the rural roads still in bad shape and the wind picking up to likely cause drifts, I would think they'll call it early tonight. I mean, if the roads are bad now, they won't improve over night, unless they believe the moon can cause some evaporation.

OK, this is getting ridiculous. Already had a 6" storm and a 10" storm this year. Now we have a blizzard coming in on Tuesday that's going to drop another 12" of snow on us. Enough is enough.

You call 6" a storm?

Alan T

It's all relative of course. Our average for an entire winter is around 13". We'll likely triple that this winter at a minimum. Looks like Boston is already 20" ahead for the entire winter, so a similar situation relatively speaking.

Just so it is clear how unusual this amount of snow is. Our normal January snowfall in my city is roughly 16 inches for the month. We've had 4 times that this month :)

That is an entire storm prediction. You are closer to Boston than me, so your numbers will be less, but for me they say Tuesday I'll get 8 inches, Wednesday another foot possibly. Basically two storms going back to back causing it to snow from Tuesday morning through till Thursday at some point.

One-Two Punch « CBS Boston (http://boston.cbslocal.com/2011/01/31/one-two-punch/)

#1…The first part of the storm will bring us snowfall Tuesday. The majority of our viewing area will receive 3-5″ (6″ in spots) during the day. However, the rain/snow line appears to create a rain/freezing rain/snow mix for the Cape/Islands which will lower the snowfall totals to 1-3″ in those locations.

#2…Late Tuesday night thru Wednesday Night…This is the biggie! The ‘panhandle hook’ is transporting loads of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. The rain/snow line with this storm system is going to be key in terms of how much snow southeastern Mass. receives. The current forecast would lead to this timeline…

-Early AM Wednesday–the initial onset will be snow

-Mid-AM thru Afternoon Wednesday–heavy snow prevails for areas north and west of the Pike, but a mixture of snow/sleet/frz.rain/rain will be an issue fro neighborhoods south of the Pike.

-Wednesday evening–the heavy snow prevails to the north while suburbs south of the Pike start to transition back to snow.

***Overall Snowfall Projections: 12-18+” for north central Mass just north and west of 495 and ‘burbs near Worcester , 9-12″ for the North Shore/southwest diagonal from Boston to areas southwest along the pike boundary (south of Worcester)…6-9″ just South of the Pike/South Shore…3-6″ near Cape Cod Canal/Buzzards Bay…1-3″ Cape/Islands. There is also a chance that we receive some ice accumulation (1/4″+) for areas south of the Pike.

Wade, I don't think anyone there fully appreciates how good the Virginia weather is. Short of somewhere like San Diego or Hawaii where it's always warm, you have the best weather of anywhere in the country.

There's a legitimate 4 seasons, which is incredibly rare. Spring and fall are lengthy and extremely pleasant. My wife summed it up perfectly: "I never understood why people liked fall until I moved here." Everywhere else, it's like this short interlude between a really hot summer and winter crap. There, you had this gradual cooling (and warming in the Spring) that lasted for a couple of months and you got to see the trees change colors or flowers bloom, depending on the season. It really was gorgeous.

The combination of summers and winters are mild, by the rest of the country's standards. It never really gets too hot or too cold but I think this needs a little further explanation. Yes, upstate New York has milder summers. However, they also get feet of snow in the winter. Similarly, Houston has mild winters but at the expense of 7 months of summer. In Virginia, the summers were fairly mild as were the winters, last year's crazy snows excepted- that was a rarity, I sense.

You want to see wild: pick a day in the Midwest when it goes from 50 in the morning to 80 and tornadic by evening to 25 and snowing the next day. That variance in Richmond was muted and much less common.

Seriously, if I could pick weather of anywhere I've been in the country and the obvious places like, again, California or Hawaii were thrown out, Virginia would be right there on my list. Everyone thinks they have crazy weather but you guys have some of the most gorgeous weather of anywhere I've been :)

Oh, and I'm sorry, but, really "it didn't hit us so it's not a big storm" people? Yes, weathermen do exaggerate but winter storms typically have pretty extreme gradients. Again, depending on where in Missouri, you could have anywhere from 1 inch to 2 feet of snow. Where we are, it's an icy nightmare in the 20s. 120 miles from here in Evansville, it's 54 and drizzly. Parts of Chicago aren't too bad. O'Hare is closed. This happens.

There really are a lot of other people experiencing what will be the worst storm of the year. Hell, almost 300 miles of I-44 are closed. That's a pretty bad storm. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get something crazy next time ;)

It's interesting- if you look at the radar, the storm is spinning around St Louis. Nothing there but go an hour west and you're looking at 1'+

Oh, and I'm sorry, but, really "it didn't hit us so it's not a big storm" people? Yes, weathermen do exaggerate but winter storms typically have pretty extreme gradients. Yeah except for that the fact when I went on weather.com this morning it was telling me a whole different story than any of the local weathermen. Sorry but that seems unusual. (weather.com was saying 2 to 3 inches, they were still predicting in feet)

Wind is pretty insane by me. There is a construction site next door and shit is blowing around everywhere. I'm worrying the scaffolding will fall and knock out our power/cable (the wires are just to the right of it). I give it a 50/50 chance.

Your lights flicker? We've had that happen here a handful of times.

We noticed a crack in a window of our baby's room yesterday, and then this afternoon we saw some water and snow seep through. Figuring we wouldn't be able to get a handyman, we patched it up with tons of duck tape, covered the window with garbage bags, and put a space heater in there. Oh, and closed all the vents I was able to in other rooms. It seems pretty close to the same temperature in there, and he's sleeping fine so far.

Well...we've had nothing but ice this whole time and we've lost some major branches off this tree. Pretty much a done deal that it'll have to come out. Will insurance pay for that or would it generally not be worth it to claim something that minor?

Of course, at this point it's minor. If some of the rest of this tree comes crashing through the roof, it's going to change things real damn quick.

Ice sucks. I'll take 2 feet of snow before I'd take the amount of ice we have.

Time to go to sleep and hope the power doesn't go out. A slight bit of good news is that it's just warm enough (33) to melt a little bit of ice off of the roof. Sure, it makes the road worse but if it turns some of the ice into water and off the roof before the wind picks up... well, I'll be happy :)

I don't know if you ask the insurance to remove a tree (unless I suppose it does damage to property). If it is around power lines you can sometimes get the power company to remove it for fear that it will fall and bring down the other power lines. When our oak went, the power company took it down and left it there and then we found someone that wanted the wood for their furnace and was willing to cut it up so we didn't pay anything.

I prefer the snow. This frozen rain is going to cause some horrible power problems. Plus dealing with frozen rain on top of 14 inches of snow is going to be a nightmare later today. (Makes the snow like 4 times heavier to remove and we already have no where to put the snow as it is).

Well, day two of being snowed in. I live at a T in the road in my neighborhood. It looks like one or two trucks have driven down the road, leaving huge ruts in the snow that my car could not clear. One side of the T has not even been touched. Given that they probably won't clear the neighborhoods, I'm severely doubting my ability to get onto the street from the cleared driveway tomorrow.

I went out and chipped away at the driveway this morning with a metal ruler to see what it looked like. At least one inch of solid ice and then one inch of refrozen sleet (it's solid to walk on but packed more like really dense snow). I say "at least" because I wasn't really sure if I was at the driveway or just a more solid layer of ice that I couldn't chip through.

I need some advice from the cold weather contingent of FOFC, I’m not used to these temp’s that we are getting here in Texas.

Before the storm hit I put the Styrofoam covers on our two outside faucets, so they have been covered the whole time. The last two days have been fricken cold, high of 20 and lows in the single digits. So I went outside today figuring I would open both faucets and let some water run, but I can’t even budge the spigot. They seem frozen pretty solid, but I didn’t want to strain them so I didn’t use much force.

It’s supposed to stay well below freezing until Saturday, so is there anything I can do in the mean time to relive pressure on the pipes? My wife is absolutely freaking out about the thought of ruptured pipes.

Turn on a faucet or two and let them drip slowly.

Maybe I’m okay then; I’ve had the two indoor faucets that are against an exterior wall dripping the whole time. And now that I think about it even if the outdoor spigots do freeze the pressure should be able to back up to the running faucets in the house, right? So I would think that as long as we are regularly running water inside we shouldn’t rupture anything.

Anyway, thanks guys. I guess I won't know for sure until it thaws.

nilodor
02-03-2011, 03:37 PM
For my outdoor faucets I've never had to do anything with them and they work fine and I don't think there is anything special with them, I do blow the one out that has the hose attached to it but I've never had any problems.

Also a note that I think has been touched on elsewhere, people here are making fun of people down there and how tough it is with a little bit of snow but they totally forget that
- There is limited snow removal and we have 160 plows ripping around non stop
- We salt and sand the roads
- And ice is worst right around freezing (which we get a lot of when temperatures can go from -24 C to 8 C in a day and back down to -10 at night). Besides no one here drives that well in it anyways!

It has already started. I've been in Houston all week, and was hoping to wrap up this stuff with the client by 2pm. It ran on until 8pm. I just now got home. Almost 5 hours to go 180 miles. The last 5 were by far the worst. There are a couple of back to back low water crossings, with fairly steep entries and exits near my house. I slid sideways at 5 mph down most of the first one, and crept along at 1 mph on the next one. The road was a sheet of ice. My fear was that while on the crossing the car would slide into the water.

I hear that even if the earth warms up or cools 5 degrees, winter is still cold and summer is still hot in most places. So the local forecasters were all doom and gloom earlier in the week predicting at least 10 inches of snow and ice and probably more. A bunch of businesses shut down and they even cancelled a Blues game. Net result: About 2 inches. Fast forward to last night. Weather forecast: Light dusting, possibly 1 inch so I decide to stay downtown (about 25 minutes from where I live) I wake up this morning to about 6 inches of snow on my car and one of the worst drives I have ever had in my life. I'm sure it has nothing to do with weather being hard to predict, especially winter weather.

Again, you wouldn't really notice the difference between 1/5th of an inch of rain and 1/2 inch of rain. Yeah, one would be more but not substantially more on the street. If the water ratio is up to 15:1 or 20:1 like it was for this storm in a lot of places, that's the difference between 3 inches and 10 inches of snow which, yeah, is pretty noticeable.

And you've lived in the Midwest too long to not know which stations to trust as trying their best and missing versus the "we're the first station on and last one off the air" apocalypse mongers. I've only lived in Indy 6 months and I'm starting to be able to tell them apart here much less in KC where I knew exactly which forecasters to believe if I wanted an accurate count instead of just entertainment.
