Got a network setup issue. Thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas on what might be happening. I've got an AT&T DSL modem that goes into a 8-port switch. It then goes out to multiple data ports in the building. One of the data ports has a wifi router attached to it. Another has a point of sale computer directly attached to the port.
I keep getting random disconnects where the internet gets 'limited or no connectivity' message and loses internet connection. After several minutes, it will suddenly start working again. Is there some IP issues or is there something related to the router or a firewall that might be causing the issue. Any assist is appreciated.

Where are you running DHCP? Or are you using all static addresses?
* The modem goes to a "switch" or does it go to a "router"?
* Does the modem or "switch" have an integrated routing capability?
* Does the modem connect to the uplink port or is it just 1 of the 8 ports on the "switch"?
* Also...does your wifi router run DHCP?
Not trying to nitpick or anything but just trying to understand what your setup is supposed to be doing.

-Dynamic IP Will that cause a problem if multiple PC's or routers are hooked to same modem?
-Modem goes into a switch. Switch is used to create a 'one to many' scenario where I can send it out to multiple wall outlets. One one of the wall outlets, I have a wifi router connected. Another outlet is connected directly to a PC. Other cables just run to outlets at this point.
-Not sure if either has integrated routing. Modem is just standard issue modem. Switch is an 8 port switch where the modem connects to one of those 8 ports on the switch.
-Wifi router will do DHCP.

Does your PoS system needs to be available to the internet or just locally on your network? Do you have it registered with a DNS service?
There are some real network professionals here that can probably offer better advice but my thinking is that you need your modem to interface to a router prior to your switch, PCs, and other devices. This router should do DHCP for all of the devices on your network and also needs to be able to forward DNS messages as well (most I believe will) for your PoS system.
Your wifi router can still hang off of the switch and do DHCP for wireless clients as well and have some more restrictive setting if desired (i.e. guests).

That actually makes pretty good sense. I have a feeling that the multiple points on the end of the switch are not playing well with the modem. I have several routers available. I'll stick one of them between the modem and the switch today when I go out to the winery and see if that clears up the issues.
Thanks and stay tuned. :)

That appears to have solved my problems. No issues thus far after that change. Thank you for your help, Steve!

No problem at all... glad you got it working again.
