I like how it's 9.99 regardless of which currency.

I fear we've demonstrated we're not very good at this game. I predict we'll lose - the only question (which looks increasingly unlikely) is will we win the space race first so that the species survives.

Oh wow - it's a real game...and that's the theme??

Very interesting...will read up on it later and may preorder tonight.

This could easily be a cover for the feds (not just US) to see if anyone else has any bright ideas on how to fix things. Would be brilliant, too.

Very interesting. They're definitely getting a lot of press. There's some more details here:

Global Warming for Gamers - NYTimes.com (http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/02/global-warming-for-gamers/)

I like this part:

"Far darker options are available for seriously unscrupulous planet savers. These include sending secret agents to overthrow recalcitrant governments and surreptitiously adding contraceptives to the water supplies of nations resistant to birth control. Those with apocalyptic leanings can even release a genetically engineered virus to crash the world population."

They're clearly going for a mainstream crowd, so I just wonder how well the game plays for a person who's played sims before. (i.e. is it oversimplified, etc.)

The first question in the FAQ is "What is a beta?" so yeah. I love the concept though, in a way it reminds me of Conflict, a little known sim in the 80s where you are the Israeli prime minister and try to outlast your Arab neighbors, getting a number of different choices for policy options, dealing with the "Palestinian problem", etc... Simple but fun game.

There was a more updated/recent version of this that definitely wasn't 80's...I had a demo installed months back...hmmm

Hah. That took all of 2 seconds

The Game :: PeaceMaker - Play the News. Solve the Puzzle. (http://www.peacemakergame.com/game.php)

I almost pulled the trigger on it then - I guess I still might one of these days now that I found it again.

Purchased. Downloading. About to install and fire it up. If it's worthy of a dynasty I'll let you guys know and fire one up in the dynasty thread.

Just a beta, so there's only one mission available in the beta, but it certainly seems like it's going to be fucking hard, and cool.

I've already lost the vaquita porpise and the walrus in two turns, despite doing what i thought was as much as i could.

DaddyTorgo

Oops - just discovered one thing I didn't realize. Maybe I could have saved the walruses.

Restarting!!

Sweet - I was just banned from the Middle East and Northern Africa.

This game is tough - you have to balance the environmental with the social & economic & political. Yikes.

DaddyTorgo

FYI - looks like it's going to be available through Steam...if I'd known that I might have bought it there instead of off their website (just for ease of licensing...playing in multiple locations, etc).

Maybe that'll spur some of you folks into checking it out when the full version is released - the beta is a bit limited with only one scenario unlocked, but still good.

I killed 34% of the world's population and was pretty damn aggressive in my policy choices and my emissions were still rising at the end of the game.

This shit is fucking HARD.

I even managed to cut global oil consumption down to 71,508Twh by the end of it all, but it wasn't enough.

What's the end of the game?

Well in this scenario (the beta only includes one scenario) I failed one of the goals and got my organization kicked out of 8 regions. It was close to 2120 (the "survive to this date to win" date), and I was just trying to hold on and arrest rising temperatures by cranking back even more on oil production, and that triggered a big global recession which exacerbated even more some of the jobless issues and security issues in places like North Africa and the Middle East.

I think I learned a lot from the first time through the game though. The full game is going to have a bunch of other scenarios with different goals as far as "how to win," but i suspect all of them (except the "wreck the earth" one) will be similar to this one: "survive to a certain date without temperature rising more than x degrees, without standard of living falling off a cliff, etc.

Have the developed world focus on pushing technological innovation, make sure you get political and welfare offices everywhere right away, potentially even go for black ops and deep black ops (to enable you to do things like slow down growth rates in places like india + china) earlier than I did, try to get everyone onto plans to cut down energy use and push renewables and nuclear early (because they take a while to get fully instituted), devote extra agents (you "buy" agents for a one time cost to give you more slots to institute policies in regions - 1 policy per agent) to places like the middle east and all of africa to try to stabilize them politically (because once you get booted out you can't control their policies and they can totally fuck up your plans).

For $10, totally worth it.
