Vince, Pt. II

I'm putting together a presentation at work a la Family Feud - and I'm using a PowerPoint presentation on a laptop through a projector to work its magic. However, we're having issues with sound, specifically when we hook the laptop up to a set of speakers to amplify the volume past what the laptop can pull off on its own. The sounds play perfectly fine through the laptop speakers themselves, the problem arises when we output through the external speakers.
Basically, all the sounds play and do so at the right time, however, they begin playback almost muted and then (after about half a second) climb quickly up to the correct volume. The problem is that most of our audio effects are short, so nearly all of the effect is done by the time it gets up to the proper volume. This sort of ruins the effect.
The problem has occurred with three different sets of speakers, so I'm sort of at a loss as to what is going on. Sound through all other programs on the computer seems to work perfectly (iTunes, etc). Here's the rig:
Sony VAIO VPCF115FM Laptop running Windows 7
Microsoft PowerPoint 2010
Speakers (and subwoofer) are connected through the laptop's 1/16th audio jack.
