I JUST found my copy of System Shock 2 and am trying to install it on Windows 7. Have had to modify the exe a couple of times so far to stop it crashing but now the sound cuts out so I'm trying some more things.
So far I love this game every bit as much as Thief. :)

great game, one of my all-time faves. I've played it about 90% of the way through twice (the ending kind of petered out for me).
sound is extremely important to the experience, IMO.
oh, and might want to do a search. pretty sure some folks put together a textures pack to improve the graphics.

Yeah I found the Looking glass site which has massive amounts of tech and FAQ info. There are already huge sections on what to do for XP/Win 7 and multicore systems.
Yeah these games are so much about sound.

[Step-by-step modding guide] System Shock 2 - "Look at you, hacker..." : gaming (http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/chefr/)
Not sure it will help with the sound issues, but a modding guide that should help with a few good additions.
Also, I was excited to read that System Shock and Thief designer Dough Church was hired by Valve (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/deus-ex-system-shock-designer-doug-church-joins-valve/). I'm hoping they let him lead a new project that will have the typical Valve polish, and look forward to it coming out in 2016. :p

2016 bleh.
I have been working on this stupid think all day. Basically I deleted the whole game and started over and downloaded their special SSTool patch system and mod manager. Although parts of their instructions are totally wrong as far as WHAT you have to do and in what order.
Thanks for that link mckerney I appreciate it. It has more things than the other guide I was following. If this weren't a Looking Glass title I would not have bothered going THIS far.

2016 bleh.
Just a guess, with Valve Time it could be a few years longer. :)

I spent all day trying to get this working. Still keeps crashing. I DID get the sound to work in the OSA/Navy sections. I had to undo the Mod tool because it caused another file to crash. I also fixed the use bug. There are SOOO many fixes for this damn thing. :(

FINALLY! After powering through 3 major crash issues and 2 other huge bugs (like key bindings and a problem with the USE interface firing guns instead of picking up objects), I can finally play. :)

I am absolutely floored at how shameless Doom 3 was in ripping off SS2 in every way. Yet I really had to put D3 down as it just wasn't fun.
