Intels vs AMDs

Has anyone built machines with the new Intel Sandy Bridge or AMD chips? I'm looking at building a new Linux server and trying to decide which to go with. Right now, I'm looking at an ASUS P8P67 board with an Intel i5-2500K. However, the AMD X6's look good as well.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Sandy Bridge is the latest tech, so I'd go with that by default. Actually just put the 2500K in my Home Theatre PC I recently built.

Which board did you use?

I got a Biostar h67 basically because it was the first mITX revised board that became available at Newegg. It's lacking features and I can't even overclock the processor with the board. That's not a big deal to me, but the k in the 2500k means it's overclockable so the h67 is a bit of a waste there. However, I did need to get the h67 so I could take advantage of the integrated graphics on the processor. I got the 2500k specifically because it has the 3000 series HD graphics while most of the lesser processors have the 2000 series. Going to see how long I can go without getting a dedicated card. Will probably upgrade to a z68 motherboard at some point - they aren't even out yet.

Ok, thanks for that. Do the P67 boards have on board video, or just overclocking? What's the advantage of the Z68 boards?

No integrated graphics on p67s and z68 will have both overclocking and on-board video.

Just built myself a new PC with the Interl Sandy Bridge

For the basics

Intel Sandy Bridge 2500K (for overclocking capacity)
ASUS P8P67 Board
8 Gb RAM (Gskill Ripjaws X)
Graphic Card : GeForce 460


For my more geeky side

(I kept my well designed Antec Solo "box")
Seasonic Multi-Flex 650W (3 modes : fanless, moderate fan, full speed) for maximum silence
SSD 64GB disk for performance & silence (installed the system on it)
WD Green 1 Tb for the storage (and silence)


Works just perfectly well (quadcore makes it that the PC is always fast even with multitasking)

Sounds like a good system, Alf. Sounds about where I'm at with the CPU and board. I don't need a powerful graphics card right now, as this will be a home server and an Oracle test box, so I'm considering an H67 board so I can take advantage of the integrated graphics.

About how much did that setup run you?
