This is the part where we pretend to have a damn clue and make predictions:
Capitals in 6 - I want to see the Rangers beat the Caps, but just can't come up with any logical way it happens. Lundqvist might have to steal 4 1-0 games for it to happen
Flyers in 6 - Same as above, Miller would have to be the best player on the ice for the series.
Habs in 7 - Everything says the Bruins should be able to pound Montreal over 7 games...but they didn't do it during the year (other than that 7-0 game).
Pens in 7 - Homer pick. Would be a hell of alot easier if Crosby was back. But, at some point James Neal has to start scoring, and that might be just enough to put them over the top.
Canucks in 7 - Probably the last team the Canucks wanted to see, but they've got just enough to win.
Sharks in 5 - LA just not playing all that well and have some injuries.
Wings in 6 - Keeping the right to revise this if Howard is terrible game 1, but Wings should be better, period.
Ducks in 7 - I don't like that most (all?) of the scoring for Anaheim comes from one line. But, that's still more scoring than Nashville has. See Lundqvist, Miller notes above and apply to Rinne.

I'll try to reserve the comments for series I have a slight clue about
Caps in 5
Flyers in 5
Bruins in 6
Pens in 7
Canucks in 5 - Chicago just isn't that good. Past be damned, the Canucks are scary in every department.
Sharks in 7 - I think LA keeps this very close and with Kopitar they send the Sharks home early again, but they just don't have the star power to actually win the series. If Quick looks like a young goalie this series could be over a lot sooner
Coyotes in 7 - obviously betting against Detroit is not a good idea, but I just get the feeling that the Wings are going to disappoint this year, and Bryzgalov is a stud in big games
Preds in 5 - a decent amount of negative-homer karma vibes in this one, but Nashville scares me a lot and this is a Ducks team that is pretty young in key areas and still takes way too many penalties. Plus a HUGE goaltending question mark - I can see a four seed followed by a disappointing early exit here.

Who knows what will happen, but the Wings did put up 3.44 GA on Bryzgalov last year in the first round. The series did go 7 games last year, so it should be interested to watch this time around.

Go Panthers!
...wait, you mean they didn't make the playoffs THIS year either? :(

Id expect there to be a huge upset or two in round 1. Out of all professional sports playoffs the NHL seems the most unpredictable. It seems every other year an 8 seed is knocking off a 1 seed.

Is there any word on Hiller? I haven't been following very closely.
I think if there was one team the Ducks could afford to not have Hiller against, it might be Nashville. They can not score.
Plus I am banking on them riding the Perry-train for another week or so.
I wish one year i'd have a reason to post in this thread:(

Look at the bright side-- you won't have to be concerned with The Official NHL Draft Lottery thread either (and not just because you don't have your first rounder)

I don't see how they can put Hiller in - his one game in 3 months he got completely lit up, he's still not completely over the symptoms as far as I can tell (but they are keeping it close to the chest) and they have 2 other goalies who have been pretty damn good when they've got a chance.
Maybe you throw him in first game of the second round or if you are getting blown out and the other two aren't getting it done but I think it's more likely he doesn't play again this season.

Sabres in 6 - Buffalo has been the best team in teh east since Pegula bought the team (16-4-4) Goaltending wins cups, They have Miller and Enroth probably the most solid tandem in the league currently.
Capitals in 5 - Hard to argue with this one. The caps are on top, the Rangers are hurting and have faded badly down teh stretch. I don't see that changing.
Canadiens in 6 - Blood Feud. You can ignore the comments that this is just another series, these two teams really hate one another. If Montreal avoids Boston's bullying and stays out of the box their power play will carry them.
Penguins in 5 - I'm just not a Tampa Fan. They started hot, then cooled off and finished kinda flat. Pittsburgh is the team this season that just finds a way to win games.
Canucks in 5 - Is this their year? its hard to tell with the bi-polar way they can play at times. I think they handle the Blackhawks and advance.
Sharks in 5 - They're simply the better team here. They let one game slip away but should cruise.
Coyotes in 6 - This is the team that may shock people. Very little coverage outside their region and they have one of the hottest young talents in the league. Goaltending wins bryzgalhov(sp?) plays huge this time of year.
Predators in 6 - Tough defensive team designed to win playoff games. They live and die with their goaltending.
Capitals in 6 - Dola, I want to see the Rangers beat the Caps, but with Callahan out, most of the team already badly druised and big question marks on the play of Christensen, Gaborik and Wolski, it will take a big team effort to overcome the Caps. Then again, if Henrik stops it all, Drury finds his game (hey, he managed to finally outscore Lundqvist this season with the goal in the Devils game) and the kids put on a show, then maybe...
Sabres in 7 - Flyers have been iffy for the last few weeks and Buffalo are playing well with Miler coming back as well, while Flyers are most questionable between the pipes.
Bruins in 6 - Tim Thomas wills it himself if nothing else.
Pens in 7 - Tough one to call, but Roloson is a suspect and the ice will surely be tilted for Bettman's pets ? ;)
Canucks in 5 - Surely they will keep their form ?
Sharks in 5 - Niemi will take them deep and they've got the depth in scoring.
Phoenix in 6 - Suprise pick of the first round ?
Ducks in 5 - - As long as Ducks get decent goaltending, they should have this one in the bag.
Obviously those will all probably be widely off the mark

I'm not going to bother predicting series finishes (since I'm terrible at it), but I'd just like to say:
1) I want the Coyotes to lose in 4 so that this whole "will Phoenix or Atlanta move to Winnipeg" thing can really start moving; and
2) Until one of them does move to Winnipeg, Go Rangers!

So I was at the Red Wings / Blackhawks game yesterday (in my Wings jersey thankyouverymuch), and it was kind of fun seeing all the long faces and dejected body language walking out of there. Sure, they still made it in thanks to Dallas wetting the bed, but I just don't see them getting very far.
Go Wings!

Anyone here up for fantasy hockey for the playoffs? I was thinking each team would consist of 4F-2D-1G, with 1 pt per point scored and 1.5 pts per win for goalies, unless someone else has a better idea. It would have to be a quick thread draft, as well.

I've done elsewhere, and here last year with a few others, the following:
Rank all teams 1 to 16. 16 being your Cup winner. Each win is 1* your ranking. I'd be willing to track again if we get enough interested.
But I'd do the fantasy draft as well.

I'd also be interested, but guessing it would be even harder now with it getting closer to the start.
Assuming we can't get it up and running, what about instead of a draft, we do something where we all select a team of players of our choice? Maybe double the roster spots posted above, no more than one player from each team, some other interesting rules possible, etc. Rosters shouldn't end up too similar, best lineup wins.
edit: If we do three forward lines, two defensemen lines, a pair of goalies, and an "extra attacker" per team, that gets us to 16 players or one from each club.

Since there's only been a few replies and we're out of time to do a draft, I'm going with Logan's suggestion that we select a group of players - 10 F, 4 D, 2 G with one player from each team in the playoffs. We'll use the scoring from the ESPN Playoff Hockey Challenge
Rules:
- Roster: 10 F, 4 D, 2 G - one player from each team in the playoffs
- Scoring:
Forwards and defensemen receive one (1) point per goal and one (1) point per assist.
Additionally, defensemen receive one (1) point per shutout as long as they record at least 1 minute of play on the ice.
Goalies receive two (2) points per win, and one (1) bonus point per shutout.
- Salary Cap: $140 million - based on ESPN Playoff Hockey Challenge values (listed in following posts)
- Roster must be posted by Wednesday @ 7 PM EST - no changes after playoffs start (I'm open to injury substitutions - let me know what you think)
When you're ready post the roster as follows:

No big deal on the deadline on my end. If Brandon Prust scores a natty HT in the 1st period of tonight's game, and he's on your team when you submit at 8:30 though...there may be hell to pay.
Can't concentrate at work even though I'm not expecting a ton out of the Rangers this series (although I do think we have a shot). Just very, very excited for playoff hockey.

Ugh. Sorry, we beat you all in a Cup. That'd be like me rooting for the Phillies now that they have Roy Halladay. I can't do it.

I might go with the Preds. They'll probably lose in the first round and that's familiar and plus, I hate the southern expansion but if Bettman didn't give them a team they'd have taken mine, so...I sort of hate them and glad they're not the Nashville Devils all at the same time.
I'd go with the Thunderleafs, but...I try not to root in-conference.

Bruins game tonight made no sense... you have this huge size advantage, so you should definitely spend the whole game not going to the net and trying to finesse the perfect shot.
Also what a stupid, selfish penalty by Chara. 2 goals down with 3 minutes left in the first game of the series, the perfect time to take a pointless roughing minor for absolutely no reason and make sure you don't get any shot at getting back into it.
Sharks - Kings game getting interesting, going to be a great series.

The Pacioretty incident, last night, and a handful of other incidents. It seems like when the game is pretty much decided, Chara can't control his emotions. I understand guys get frustrated, but he rarely does these things in-game.

Aside from the arena (which I feel is fine as configured, frankly, but rumours do exist that engineers are exploring expansion possibilities), what are your other reasons for Winnipeg not getting a team? Are they all out-dated preconceptions of an environment that has changed dramatically since 1996?

I haven't believed it in the past either, and certainly Bettman can still pull a rabbit out of his hat, but I think this is about as close as it can get without actually happening.
Keep in mind there is the Atlanta situation as well. One of our local journalists has speculated that the NHL would really like to keep the coyotes in Phoenix mostly because they want to have Winnipeg as the Atlanta fallback. If Phoenix comes to Winnipeg and no one steps up in Atlanta, the NHL is a bit stuck trying to find a situation they can drop the Thrashers into immediately.

Personally, I'd like to see them stay in Atlanta because I think even with minor successes in Tampa and Raleigh, a failure in Atlanta (generally considered the media capital of the southeast) would just renew the whole drumbeat from the snobs who want all the teams removed from the Sun Belt. This is in spite of the fact that it looks like Tampa has stabilized after a period of decline, Carolina is in Raleigh through at least 2024, and Florida, in spite of dismal failure on ice and in the stands, is pretty much going nowhere due their lease agreement, as well. Dallas has suddenly become vulnerable because of how badly Tom Hicks f'ed up things there, but the Stars, when they were successful, were among the biggest moneymakers in the league for a while, so I expect someone to step in at some point there.

Tonight's Bruins game went like this:
Chara a late scratch due to dehydration for a playoff game against your arch rivals. To be fair, he looked terrible on the ice in warmups but still, it's the playoffs.
Montreal scores twice in the first 2:20. The Bruins spend the rest of the 1st period peppering Carey Price with saves but cannot score. The Bruins then turn the puck over about 5,392 times in the neutral zone and try to force passes through two or three Montreal defenders again and again. The Bruins finally score a goal, first in the series, but Montreal regains its two goal lead on another bad neutral zone turnover and a bad rebound that Thomas failed to control. This team is done. They look listless and unmotivated and lack the on-ice leadership to make a difference. I fully expect them to be swept in this series.

Should have been a game though I am fine with two. The issue I had with it is there is no reason for anyone to ever make that type of motion with their foot on the ice, ever. What was he going to do if he didn't hit his foot, just step on the puck?

1) I am married with four kids and don't even have a basement.

Should have been a game though I am fine with two. The issue I had with it is there is no reason for anyone to ever make that type of motion with their foot on the ice, ever. What was he going to do if he didn't hit his foot, just step on the puck?
I think his explanation was that he was trying to kick his foot away and just got it all wrong. I honestly don't think Bobby Ryan is that kind of player to try to hurt somebody like that intentionally, but it didn't look good
As a Ducks fan I have no problem with 2 games. There are some things in a game of hockey that are so dangerous that a clear message has to be sent, and stamping on a prone player with a razor sharp skate is definitely one of them.

I'm with you...I think that's a good goal. Unless war room has above the goal view with clock, not sure how they determine time.
Official called it a goal, though I admit I don't know rules there as far as with the clock. He may be signaling its across the line, but has no idea on the clock.
Also, a Pens fan and Flyers fan agreeing on a goal for the Rangers...something wrong here.

Nice chance for Collie to make a statement on the Torres on Seabrook hit.
Under normal circumstances, the call on the ice may be enough. But blindside head contact, and it's your first game back from a prior suspension?
He got 4 last time, I'll say 6, which would take him until sometime in the middle of the 2nd round.

Bruce Boudreau is a complete idiot. I realize he is trying to bait the Rangers and take the heat off his players, but c'mon....talking shit about the other team's arena during a playoff series? I lol'd at him and his seven chins when I read this...
"Well, the one thing, its reputation is far better than the actual building," Boudreau said on 105.9 The Edge's "Kirk and Mike Show," according to The Washington Post. "I mean, it's nothing. The locker rooms are horrible. The benches are horrible. There's no room for anything. But the reputation of being in Madison Square Garden is what makes it famous. Also, our building's a lot louder, too. So I mean, they can say what they want, but it's not that loud in there."

Funniest thing I've seen in awhile on NHLN-- Kelly Chase on the Downie hit.
(Paraphrasing here): "I love what Downie did...Lovejoy is 6'3", Downie around 5'9". So, to play with these guys, you've got to get up to their level"

I think he was referring to the Rangers getting the calls in that game. I don't think there was a call I could point to as being terrible, but we certainly got plenty of PPs.
Boudreau's comment would be funny if it wasn't so stupid. Really, a 15 year old acoustically-tuned arena is more modern and louder than a 40+ year old building that is currently being gutted during a massive renovation? Pretty interesting.

If Bruce Boudreau is an idiot for talking shit about ther other team's arena during a playoff series, I guess you would have to add Scotty Bowman to your idiot list, because he did the exact same thing. I believe it was Colorado's arena at the time when he was coaching Detroit. He complained about the locker rooms and the lack of room on the bench. While not playoff related, the NHL and NBC are making a big announcement today.
It looks like the NHL will be staying on NBC/Versus (soon to be called "NBC Sports Channel") for the next decade or so.
NHL set to announce new TV deal - The Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/nhl-set-to-announce-new-tv-deal/article1991065/)
To be honest, I am perfectly fine with this.
I have no real problem with the NBC/Versus coverage of the NHL. It’s not perfect and they could still refine some things, but with ESPN carrying baseball, basketball, football and college football, I think the NHL would get squeezed out time and time again on that network.
Also, what NHL luminaries are over at ESPN that would be such a huge improvement over what Versus/NBC offer? Barry Melrose and Matthew Barnaby? Riiiight.
I just think ESPN’s docket is too crowded. Even if ESPN did have the NHL, it would still be treated as the red headed step child far too often. It would definitely get more exposure on the networks than it does not (that bar is low), but it would still be paltry.
Also, ESPN has really gone down the tubes ever since around 2004 or so. Unless there is college footbal or NFL football on, I never watch any of their networks. Sportscenter has become and over produced bore of a show. If I want NFL news/highlights, I will turn on the NFL Network. If I want NHL highlights/news, I turn to the NHL network.
As for “growing” the sport via ESPN. Let’s face it. Hockey is a niche sport. It’s a wonderful, fantastic niche sport, but I am not sure how much more it can grow. Look at what’s happening in Phoenix and Atlanta. Those were both efforts to “grow” the sport in the US. So long as the NHL can continue to function as it is and there are enough revenues, I am quite content to have the sport be the wonderful, little niche sport that it is. Move Phoenix back to Winnipeg. Put Atlanta in Hamilton and lets move on.

I'm with you on ESPN being too crowded for hockey. Not to combine threads, but it's why Big East football fans are so adamant about the TV deal being shopped to other networks, at the very least to obtain better terms even if they end up sticking with ESPN. Otherwise, the majority of BE football will go to the same place that the majority of hockey would...ESPN3.com.

Without watching both, Kunitz is inside the zone, about the faceoff dot (maybe deeper?). Downie is out by the blueline.
If anything, the Kunitz hit is illegal now because Crosby, I think, is right on him, and as the rule's written now, can't make the hit while already receiving lateral or back pressure. AKA the Colby Armstrong special.

Excellent series sweep by the Wings, now for some rest for the vets. Zetterberg and Franzen should both be available for the 2nd round series.

04-21-2011, 09:12 AM
I was worried about the Wings heading into the first round. The team had three glaring weaknesses since the All-Star break, all concerning the defense and all inter-related. First, they had trouble clearing the puck out of their own zone. Time and time again they just threw the puck up the boards only to have it intercepted and dumped back low. Second, teams could endlessly cycle down low on them. I am not sure if it is the defensive scheme or the players, but it happened a lot. Third, bad give aways in their own end. I think it was a combination of not being able to clear and being tired from chasing the other team cycling down low that led to some horrendous giveaways.
All three reared their ugly head in the first 10 minutes or so of Game 1 against Phoenix. It looked horrible. They finally managed to right the ship in the second period of that game and, besides some really bad penality killing, they never looked back.
Datsyuk has been playing some of his best hockey all year. He was a force of nature in the first two games. Hanzal shut him down, more or less, in games 3 and 4, though he had an amazing assist on the first goal last night.
Howard was solid. He didn't really give up a bad or soft goal all series and made some really excellent, timely saves. He completely out played Bryzgalov in each and every game. I saw some statistic that compared Bryzgalov's playoff numbers - wins, goals against and save percentage - against everyone else and those same numbers against the Wings. It pretty much told the story. He got some bad breaks, but also let in several very bad goals.
The biggest improvement for the Wings, over last years, has been the play of Helm and Abdelkader. Abdelkader was centering the second line, since Zetterberg was injured, and Helm was probably the Wings second best forward, after Datsyuk, in every game. His speed put constant pressure on the Coyotes defense. It was great to see those two young players take a much more prominent role. Kronwall has also stepped up his game. He was the leader in ice time for all Wings defensemen. Lidstrom's ice time has been reduced considerably, which is a good thing for him. Time marches on for everyone.
It was very much a "team" win in this series with 13 different Wings scoring at least one goal in the four games.
I think the time off will be good. The Wings didn't have Zetterberg or Franzen last night. Fewer games mean fewer bumps, bruises or worse. As we all know the Wings have been an "old" team since about 1997.
The Wings could still work on those issues I mentioned above, as they flared up from time to time, and definitely need to sort out the PK.

Some of my own thoughts on what I've seen thus far from the Wings:
Jimmy Howard might be playing his best hockey of the season, but the defense in front of him still looks a little leaky to me, which is a significant reversal from what we've seen over the past decade or so (Osgood -was- a serviceable netminder, but had really good defense in front of him). Time is finally catching up with Lidstrom. He's still good, don't get me wrong, and there is still no one else I'd rather have quarterbacking my power play. But Kronwall is probably the closest thing they have to a lock-down defender now.
As has been mentioned, the penalty kill needs to step it up a little bit. It's been far too passive for my taste ever since Babcock took over. Even a little bit of token pressure on the point-men can pay big dividends, so long as you don't over-extend.
Offensively the team is clicking really well right now, so I expect a lot of 4-3 results the rest of the way. Nearly everyone seems to be getting into the mix in the offensive zone, and I -really- like the change they've made with Holmstrom, moving him 6-12 inches further out from the paint. He's still effective, but we haven't even sniffed one of those horrible disallowed goals yet.
Helm continues to impress. The stretch last night when he took out Yandle, then fed Eaves for an easy goal was a thing of beauty. Bright, bright future ahead for him (hopefully in a Red Wings jersey well past next year).
I would pay money just to watch Pavel Datsyuk handle the puck. They should start playing Ragtime over the loudspeakers at the Joe every time he gets the puck on his stick in the offensive zone.

Wings need to stay out of the box and limit the sloppy play through the neutral zone, especially if we end up playing San Jose next. They have guys who can actually make us pay as opposed to the Jets. Our PK needs to step it up as well.

All this talk about the Coyotes moving back to Winnipeg has got me thinking whether Bettman might use expansion as a way of keeping his franchise in Phoenix (and Atlanta in a couple of years when that gets to be an issue)
Honestly I think of all the major sports hockey is the most conducive. For a start, a team is 25-30 guys with at least 22 or 23 of those guys contributing on a regular night. The average skill level of a third.fourth liner in the NHL isn't that much higher than the skill level of the average AHL first liner and many teams have exciting young players in the AHL who they bring up as soon as the rosters expand. And hockey is by far the cheapest game in terms of owning a franchise and paying the players. Compare that to football where the cost of just building a stadium is enormous and injuries are on the rise every year, or baseball where there seem to be very few replacement level guys in AAA, or basketball where it's all about the stars and even 9th or 10th guys on the bench of an average team are pretty much scrubs. Call me crazy but I don't think expanding by another two teams would dilute the league that much. I bet I could build a team of guys in the AHL at the roster expansion this year that wouldn't finish last in the entire NHL.

Just to make it clear I'm not arguing for it - I'd pull those teams out of Phoenix and Atlanta and move them back to a traditional market in a heartbeat. I'm stoked about the possibility of a team in Winnipeg next year. But just trying to think if Bettman is as stubborn as we think he is, and uses future expansion as a way to stave this off - is it really the worst thing ever?

Hard to know. Winnipeg is the NHL equivalent of the NFL's Los Angeles. As long as it's open, it's a weapon in the NHL arsenal against cities reluctant to meet their wishes (granted, the same could be said about Quebec, but the arena's already built in Winnipeg).

Maybe Ryan Miller should have kicked Carcillo a few more times. Or how about Kaleta opening the bench door so one of your Sabers can knock Zherdev into the bench. Please don't whine (like another Sabers fan) about the end of the game scrum when this BS happened during the game.
I will not argue that Richards deserved a penalty for his actions, but not 5 minutes. Say all you want about the win last night, and you guys won...but you held on for dear life in that third period.

The Sabres-Flyers game series has been a weird series to me. Each game has a different flavor it, but still with the emotional and physical aspects to it. And Hartnell, Carricollo, and Richards, Timonen (sticking Gerbe in the nuts after the game) certainly have had their moments like our guys. So don't whine about our guys when your guys are just as cheap and dirty.

Luongo is what's going on. He is a proven playoff failure, doesn't have the mental attributes needed to succeed at that level. He is the classic "great regular season but flops in the playoffs goalie." You can see that the rest of the team has lost confidence in him right now, and something isn't done quickly, they may end up blowing that 3-0 series lead in a big way.

I imagine you did hear something like that, but it doesn't seem to be quite that intense.
Glavine could invest to keep Thrashers in Atlanta *| ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-thrashers/glavine-could-invest-to-920418.html)
“I am not buying the Thrashers,” the Braves pitching great said Thursday.
Glavine said his main interest is in keeping the Thrashers in Atlanta. And he is willing to do whatever he can — perhaps even becoming a partial investor — to help ensure the city does not lose an NHL franchise for a second time.
“I have a huge interest in hockey and the Thrashers,” Glavine said. “I would hate to see them leave. My kids play hockey. It’s a big part of our lives. We want to be able to keep going to games.
“I’m trying to do whatever I can do to keep the team here. Whether that is putting together a group locally or finding someone from outside the area. Any way my involvement will help, I am willing to do it.”
...
“To be perfectly honest, I don’t have the money to buy the team,” Glavine said. “I could be an investor. I could go down that road. I’m not saying I will or I will not.”

This is all part of Bettman's...er I mean Pittsburgh's grand plan. Piece by piece, let the other teams in the East fall apart, then bring Crosby back at 100% health.
Ryan Malone is a wreck in the PIT-TB series. He's been nursing a shoulder injury. He got knocked down in front of the net during game 3, and he was like a turtle on his back, he laid there for what seemed like forever.
Oddly, Pittsburgh has had no inury issues, outside of what they came into the series with. Allow Staal and Talbot each sat out parts of the 3rd period and first OT the other night. Talbot got smacked looking for the puck. Head shot, but legal. Staal went for a hit and ended up head first into the boards.
