I know we have a bunch of Missouri folks on the board and shit is going down in STL right now.

We just had our own scare here in the Lexington area. We were 30 miles NE at a softball tournament when the weather started, and let me tell you - sitting in the car listening to the local weather guy describe your neighborhood while discussing the imminent path of a tornado sucks shit. But not as bad as it actually doing damage, of course. And we got lucky. It looks like a tornado went through downtown Versailles right through my neighborhood - knocked down our basketball goal, but the trash can on the curb was still upright. Amazing.

That STL storm is headed this way for the middle of the night - should be a fun night.

Stay safe.

Hope everybody got through this safe & sound. Watched a good bit of it on TWC at dinner as the storms were rolling into the STL area, that was some nasty looking shit.

The airport really got hit hard, lost its roof and had winds blowing through the inside of the baggage claim and pinning people against the walls. Just rained with a little hail where I live.

A tornado was spotted on the ground 5 miles from my area. Otherwise lots of rain and a little hail.

Im watching the news now. They are showing the destruction near the airport. Devastating. The neighborhood is a mess. 135 to 200 mph wind last night.

We've had nothing but wave after wave of severe weather today, too. It's crazy. Saw a really cool wall form just south of the airport as we were driving home. Looks like another night of waiting for a line of severe weather to come through.

Jeebus, more frickin' tornado warnings. Where exactly do you go from the 26th floor during a tornado? Today/tonight is supposed to be really, really bad. Good start, anyway.

Watching the tornado warnings roll across Alabama & into TN right now ... as my wife drives right smack into them with her mother (who was hellbent & determined to go deal with some b.s. on her old house that she's prepping for sale ... nvrmnd that she's had over a year for this stuff).

On track for the 4th rainiest month in recorded history for our area. Approaching 10" of rain, which for a month, is quite a bit. Have had constant flash flood warnings for seems like 2 weeks now.

My back yard is a mud lake.

Seeing reports on severe damage around the area in Alabama where I once lived (Arab and Guntersville is just south of Grant where I got my board name). This just the leading edge of what is supposed to be worse storms this afternoon/tonight. Everyone keep safe today.

I'm watching the live coverage out of Birmingham. T-town had two large tornadoes hit it, and they had it on webcam until hit right at the stadium on campus and took it out. The tornado is still on the ground and is 15 miles out heading toward them, but the debris is already falling around their studio, including 20 ft long pieces of plywood.

I looked it up, that appears to be south & west of nearly all the action so far. I've been watching these things roll up pretty closely most of the day honestly don't recall seeing Chilton County mentioned in any of the warnings. After about 2 hours on the phone to keep track of things, finally got my parents out of their basement north of ATL. Looks like they're almost in the clear for the rest of the night, had a Doppler-likely tornado get within about 2 minutes of them & then it hung a right and went elsewhere. That's a relief.

Now the fun round two, as Athens, GA is about an hour away from getting our first issue of the day. Heck, first rain I've seen here all day started drizzling about 15 minutes ago.

Hadn't seen the debris field images before.

I kind of got a chuckle out of the obvious delight they were getting out of those -- of being able to see them for real, in their own market -- was apparently the first time they've seen them for real since the new superduper radar was installed.

It will be really interesting to watch Storm Chasers in the fall as they document this stretch of tornadic weather. I just went to Reed's site, and it looks like they were in Clinton Mississippi yesterday. I remember from last year that they took a risk and went to MS when most of the chasers wouldn't go there - because of high population areas, trees, etc., which makes chasing very dangerous - and were in the middle of a bad one and helped some people out of destroyed houses, etc. But I doubt any of them went any further than MS. But watching the whole thing play out from their perspective, 6 months later, is going to be really interesting.

8 of the fatalities in TN were in my wife's hometown (or out in the county a few miles away).

Meanwhile one of the hardest hit parts of GA was Ringgold, where a three-story motel collapsed, every restaurant in town has been destroyed, and both their HS & MS were heavily damaged (students weren't in the bldg thankfully). That's along the route she drove home from TN yesterday, more than a close call for this husband.

There's up to 100k chickens abruptly free-ranging in the county where I grew up (somehow several chicken houses were destroyed but much of the poultry reportedly survived). Sounds funny but not the guy who had his livelihood destroyed. Nearby rescue workers finally made it into a ruined street & successfully rescued an elderly woman trapped in her home after several hours (and at least one, possibly two more storms passed over the rubble while she was still inside).

In Tuscaloosa, a former co-worker's college student son dropped his car off at the local tire shop for service. Luckily he ducked into a friend's off-campus apartment on the next block to wait out the storm. Minutes later the tire shop was leveled, still not sure where the car ended up. Another former co-worker is in Birmingham, she ducked inside a restaurant to dodge the debris raining down on the parking lot.

Glen rocks. You know, Their radar updates every minute and not every 6 minutes like conventional radar. He might mention that every 6 minutes. :)

We had a tornado jump us. It fell apart just before it got to us and reform on the other side of the county. Scary stuff. Pretty crazy night.

re: debris items -- there's about a half dozen or so pictures of things like that in a photo gallery on the WRCB-TV website. Receipts from a Trenton, GA tire store, a checkbook from Cullman, AL, a check re-order receipt from a different bank in AL ... all found in Chattanooga or as far north as Dunlap, TN. Average distance from launch to landing seemed to be about 85-90 miles.

well thought we might have escaped the tornado "fun" here in Myrtle Beach area-we've been under a watch all day, but the storm line has stayed just far enough to the west that we haven't even had any rain today. The watch was supposed to be over at 4 pm, they just extended it to 8 pm.

The Tuscaloosa videos, especially the one with the guy in Coleman Coliseum, were pretty unbelievable. What are they saying, F4 or 5? Surely an F5.

Smithville, about 50 miles southeast of here, was flattened. Some gruesome stuff from a friend of mine over there. He said his neighbors were looking at the damage in their backyard and noticed a woman lying face down that lived about a mile down that had been deposited there by the tornado.

I've never seen anything like this in my life.

So I travelled to south west Virginia this weekend for a wedding. Interstate 81 was blocked up at roughly the Abingdon area(nice place btw). We then attempted to take a bunch of back roads to avoid the congestion....holy shit the tornado carnage was insane. Telephone poles sheared in half. Trees down everywhere. I'm pretty sure the interstate was compromised at some point, as the traffic backup was so signficant.

Preliminary was F4, could change though. So far, the Smithville twister and the one that hit Hackleburg, AL are the only two F5's.

Smithville, about 50 miles southeast of here, was flattened.

That would be the area that caused Roy Oswalt to leave the team for personal reasons (he's from/has family in that area if I understood things correctly). I'm sure you knew that, I just didn't recall seeing it mentioned in this thread & figured I'd throw it out there.

FWIW, a stormchaser friend of mine linked the updated NWS stats on the outbreak today. Current count is still two F5, eleven F4 and 21 F3 from a total of 362 confirmed tornadoes between 4/25 and 4/28. Between 8a 4/27 and 8a 4/28 there were 312. Death toll for the three days is at 350, with all but 10 of those on the last day. It dwarfs the 1974 Super Outbreak in terms of total twisters and has now surpassed one-day and two-day death tolls back to 1936 and 1925 respectively.

Given the razed nature of sizeable chunks of Tuscaloosa, I'm rather surprised that the Tuscaloosa twister didn't measure out as an EF5, and if that's not EF5-level destruction, I'm not sure I want to see what EF5-level destruction looks like.

Pretty surprised as well, since the radar was clocking it at above 200 mph at the time. But I guess the extent of the damage must have been because of the size, and not wind-speed when they inspected the damage.

This will be fascinating:

THE SOUND AND THE FURY: BEHIND THE KILLER TORNADOS OF 2011
Discovery’s Storm Chasers Explain the Why and How in an all-new world premiere special,
TORNADO RAMPAGE 2011 on Sunday, May 22, 9 PM (ET/PT) on Discovery Channel
(Silver Spring, Md.) –With nearly 200 tornados recorded and over 300 lives lost in just a single day, weather history was made on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 in the worst tornado outbreak since 1974. Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers were filming that day in the center of the action and now present never-before-seen footage, recount their harrowing stories and put into both scientific and human context the overwhelming tragedy in the all new special TORNADO RAMPAGE 2011 airing Sunday, May 22 at 9PM ET/PT on Discovery Channel.Storm Chasers’ Reed Timmer, Sean Casey and Tim Samaras were all filming with their chase teams on Wednesday, April 27th for the new season of their series when they become caught up in unprecedented multiple tornados. Their exclusive, never-before-seen footage combined with meteorological expertise and years of chasing experience helps piece together a day that saw so much destruction and loss of life.

Tornados are one of Mother Nature’s most mystifying, deadly forces. When conditions are just right what starts as a breeze can becomes a mass of spinning energy as loud as a jet engine and as strong as a freight train. All three chase teams witnessed the storms from different locations across the South allowing Discovery to offer a comprehensive, 360° look at this unimaginable tragedy.

“In all my years of chasing tornados, this was hands down the most unforgettable day. The intensity of the storm activity and the sheer number of tornados that touched down is overwhelming and heartbreaking. By studying this historic day we hope to learn more information for our research and help better predict tornados and save lives,” said Storm Chasers’ meteorologist Reed Timmer

TORNADO RAMPAGE 2011 is produced for Discovery Channel by Darlow Smithson. Tom Brisley and Guy Davies are executive producers. For Discovery Channel, Stephen Reverend is executive producer.

The image traces the damage of an EF-4 tornado, the second-highest rating on the tornado damage scale (http://www.ouramazingplanet.com/tornado-damage-scale-image-110425-1435/), which tore through the college town (http://www.ouramazingplanet.com/tornado-facts-records-110428-1450/) on April 27.

In the picture, captured just days after the storm, pink represents vegetation and aqua is the absence of vegetation. The tornado ripped up everything in its path, scouring the Earth's surface with its winds of up to 200 mph (322 kph). The "tearing up" of vegetation makes the tornado's track stand out as a wide swath of aqua.

"This image and others like it are helping us study the torn landscape to determine just how huge and powerful these twisters were and to assess the damage they inflicted," said NASA meteorologist Gary Jedlovec of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

To detect the scars left by the twisters (http://www.ouramazingplanet.com/sideways-tornado-video-110428-1454/), the NASA ASTER satellite, short for Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer, senses the visible and infrared energy reflected from the planet's surface. Destruction that shows crushed houses, torn and snapped trees and uprooted crops are evident in the multi-wavelength images.

"A demolished house, debris and soil scattered on vegetated surfaces, and damaged trees and crops all change the pattern of reflected radiation measured by the satellite," Jedlovec said. "We can analyze these patterns to help storm survey teams evaluate the damage."

Ground teams conducting field surveys of tornado damage must try to pinpoint where the twisters touched down, how long they stayed on the ground, and the force of their winds. But some places are nearly impossible to reach by foot or car. Also, in remote areas, damage often goes unreported, so survey teams don't know to look there. This is where satellites can help.

The satellite's sensors can detect damage in rural areas, wilderness areas and other unpopulated areas, which allows surveyors to determine the true track of a tornado, Tracing a tornado's path could also help scientists learn how these storms form and move so that meteorologists can improve warnings.

Jedlovec and colleagues are working to produce satellite images of other areas ravaged by the historic outbreak of tornadoes.

Reading some crazy reports so far.

There are reports of a direct hit on Limestone Correctional Facility in Alabama. Also reports of massive hail in Indianapolis. One report said that the University of Indianapolis parking lot has so much big hail it looks like there was a snow storm.

It is the area, yep.

So far I have only seen this blurb from an official outlet about it

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Alabama - Madison County Commissioner Dale Strong said Limestone Correctional Facility took a "direct hit" from the storm. He said there are injuries and more than 1,000 feet of fence down around the prison.

"They called me and said they've got a bunch of injuries over there" at the prison. He also said at least one home was damaged north of the Sparkman Ninth Grade Academy and an 18-wheeler overturned on Jeff Road near the Highway 53 intersection.

Well we were in the basement for an hour today. Before we got home, the Mrs and I were out shopping so we raced home but didn't make it before the boys got home. We were on the highway and it's the first time that I've seen falling debris ahead of a storm. It's nice to be able to pull straight into the driveway and head right to the basement.

We had a lot of rain, but not the severity that we were expecting since our house was right in the path of a cell that had created tornado's throughout the day.

All's well from Northern Kentucky.

URGENT UPDATE: I just finished looking over the morning computer models and things have gone from bad to worse. The trend continues to show grave concern. We are in store for a 2 day outbreak of deadly tornadoes beginning this afternoon. There is a High Risk from the SPC tomorrow but there should be one today as well, if at least not a Moderate. Doesn't matter, don't let that affect you either way.... The point is we have two unique atmospheric conditions setting up which will give us the same result each day. Storms should start to fire by 4pm across W/SW/S/C OK and continue to develop during the overnight. The tornado threat increases exponentially after dark, but that's not to say there won't be short lived quick ones before dusk. I do expect them. The long track long lived ones may hold off until after dusk when we are all most vulnerable. The storms will continue through much of the night over the state before ending by day break.

The next round for Saturday still appears to hold off until late in the day, near dusk for another evening event. As the 1st round will work over the atmosphere to help stabilize it. This is the kind of situation where unfortunately people die. There's only so much you can do to take responsibility for yourself and loved ones. For one, find a sturdy shelter, two get a NOAA weather radio and pay attention, and three pray. I have a very bad feeling about this. I hope I am wrong though. Too many things are pointing to one of the nastiest events we've seen over this region in a long time.

Also, OK is not alone in this. N TX up to NE and points East will be affected also. This will be a storm system for the record books folks. I don't often get worked up over events until I see a setup that looks to take lives from strong tornadoes such as EF4s and EF5s, especially at night. This is one of those. Don't panic, just prepare. Be safe!

There is a very nasty weather pattern setting up for Saturday that seems guaranteed to produce some tornadoes. But for someone who has lived in tornado alley all his life, the advanced hype may be a bit uncalled for.

KC newscasts tonight were leading with the weather warnings for tomorrow and tomorrow night, which is very rare for thunderstorms and tornados. We get much more worked up over snow.

I think some of the hype and activity is due to the new language the NWS is using for tornadoes in Kansas and Missouri. They are testing new language that is more descriptive and aggressive regarding potential tornado activity and damage to see if it will make people take warnings more seriously without scaring people or going over the top. So far, I think they may be failing. Everybody seems to be either worried or thinking it's a TV ratings ploy.

That aside, it definitely looks like a dangerous setup for Saturday and I hope everyone watches the skies here. There was already a tornado in Norman, OK -- hope everyone there is well and checks in.

Interesting note, the is only the second time the Storm Prediction Center has issued a high-risk warning for tornados more than 24 hours in advance. The last time was in April 2006 when nearly 100 tornadoes broke out across the southeast and killed 12 people.

Worth keeping an eye on tomorrow. I'm a bit worried since a friend and I are planning to head over to Columbia for Mizzou's spring game tomorrow.

We've been very fortunate tonight as the tornadoes have been away from population centers, for the most part. When it went over Salina, the funnel clouds stayed in the sky. The tornadic storm appear to be going south of Hutchinson and the one in Iowa weakened a little bit ago as it's just a Severe T-Storm warning over Des Moines now.

No power since Friday. Swear it sounded like a tornado came through before the thunderstorm actually hit. We were extremely lucky with no damage to the house or cars. Huge tree near the house was snapped like a twig about 15 feet up. The top fell parallel to the house (was 5 feet from the house. It destroyed a gate to the back yard but that was about the extent of it. If it falls one was it crushes into the house. Another way it proably gets our propane tank. The other way and it take out our power lines. A lot of our yard still isn't safe with parts of trees hanging on.

Now for the fun part, cleanup and dealing with the insurance company.

No idea when we will get power back on.

Stayed with my wife and girls at my sister's house last night. Let my wife know about the call and that I was going to leave early to go back to the house to start getting things back online.

An hour and 15 minute drive later (thanks to about a half hour extra in detours)..... no power on. SOB!!!

That was one of the most frightening experiences that I can remember. Hearing that extremely loud and very ominous sound, not knowing what was about to happen without having a basement and then the crash of the tree as it snapped and fell. By the time the thunderstorm actually started it felt like a relief. Though as you said, it seemed like daytime with how often it was flashing and how extremely bright each flash seemed.

Still no power. Though i have now been called twice by the electric company to tell me that power has been restored. They're just effing with me now.

On another note. Glad i didn't get that pool a couple weeks ago. It would have been smashed.

Found out that i am screwed for the cost of getting the trees taken care of. Insurance will only cover it if it hit a structure.

Seems to be looking more likely that this storm will pack some serious punch to NYC as well. Not the 3 ft or whatever for Boston, but a good foot plus. I'm supposed to be driving down to Virginia tomorrow to visit a friend, and it's looking like we'll cancel as I'm worried about being unable to get back into the city on Sunday.

The funny thing is, we've been looking forward to this for a while as we were best friends growing up, our women are friends now, he's got a cute little kid, and we don't see each other too much anymore, and the last time we had all planned to hang out for an extended period was at another friend's wedding...and that got short by Hurricane Sandy! up to 30 inches of snow and it is still snowing! Front door can not be opened, only way out of the house right now is to jump out of a window. After it stops snowing in a few hours, we'll start trying to figure out how to get the garage door cleared enough to get the snow blower out and see if it can do anything with this stuff.

Between 24 and 30 inches here according to reports (I'm right on the line apparently - my parents are a town over and got 23).

I'm in an apartment, so it's really no big thing to me. Should call my folks and see how they're doing. Never lost power (although it flickered a little, only 1,000 people in my town apparently lost power), and my folks didn't either.

My sister and her BF live right by Fenway Park - they went out last night and took photos of each other pelting the park with snowballs in retaliation for the crappy season...thought that was pretty amusing - got to find a way to make that picture get out there to the public.

Facebook friends probably have already seen these, but here are a couple of my pictures. It is not much fun when the snow is twice as high as the snow blower. I actually went through and had to shovel off the top 6-10 inches of snow to the ground to keep the snow blower from stalling out.

Overhead power lines + many trees + winter climate = Yikes.Outside of maybe the first hour or two where it was normal density, that was some of the lightest, fluffiest snow I can recall. Which led to the massive blowing and large drifts that made travel so dangerous during it (not that many tried - from what I saw driving home from work at 5:00 people didn't exactly adhere to the 4pm ban, but I don't think anyone intended to enforce it then, and everyone except plows and emergency vehicles seemed to off the road entirely by like 7 from what I could see - no repeat of '78 with cars getting trapped on highways up here), but led to very easy shoveling afterwards.

The trouble was/is, there's nowhere to put that much snow, so with weather projected to be low 40's at best and dry the next week after today this precipitation will be very important. I'm rooting for it to switch from snow to rain as early as possible and melt at least half this stuff, but that increases the risk of flooding along rivers (or any storm drains that are clogged/get backed up), and roofs/tree limbs collapsing due to weight. Outside of a couple South Shore/Cape communities that got hit hard the timing (starting Friday night) and density of this storm was pretty perfect in terms of keeping people safe and the economic impact to a minimum - and people have basically treated it as a 3-day vacation, drinking inside, walking down streets, accepting that all roads are half their normal width if they do have to drive somewhere, etc. We'll see how things play out today - hopefully the region's luck holds out and enough melts we can widen the roads back to their normal number of lanes, etc, but it could be dicey.

Just saw a road cam with someone out of their car on the interstate clearing their windows. A funnel cloud spotted over my town. But our Tornado warning expired. A tornado was spotted about 15 miles northeast of us.
A mobile home park got hit by a tornado 25 miles southwest of us. Why do tornadoes like mobile homes?

We had golf ball sized hail the other day. Had a roofing guy out today. Roof needs to be replaced. Yay.
He pointed out 2 softball sized dents in one of my gutters. New gutters, also.

Looking at 10-15" of snow here today.

We'll be at 18" within the hour, and the forecast is that "the rate of snowfall will slow by morning." It's coming down at 1" per hour now.

Damn, I just saw that. Wow, the only upside is that it's April and not October. It shouldn't last too long by comparison. That's pretty much the reason I was ready to leave there after graduation.

More snow. Surely someone will tell me at work tomorrow how great this is and how we need the moisture. I know it's true. Doesn't make me like it anymore.

:)

We closed to college at 1 today, after being open initially. I think the worst of it is done, though.

Still fascinated by temperature extremes. Right now, 44 in Amarillo but 90 in nearby Lubbock.

Yeah. It is 85 in St Louis and 3 hours NW in Kirksville it is 48.
The news was showing a funnel cloud west of Jefferson City, MO. This storm is moving from W to NE. And it loks to miss us.
But it is an early indication of what could be coming tomorrow.

The wind map today is pretty interesting:
Wind Map (http://hint.fm/wind/)

There's a distinct line where the big front is. The front just came through in the last half hour and there are 25 degree gradients across 100 miles. It's in the mid to upper 70s near the coast while it's in the low 50s back towards the hill country and Austin.

Its like a fault line from Baton Rouge to Lansing. That explains the three days of storms we have had here in Detroit.

Still haven't had a day over 50 yet in Central WI. We're due for one on Sunday/Monday before it goes back down into the low 40s again for next week.

I heard that about Fargo, too. I'll just await the big thaw and what flooding may come (to my part of the state) or will come (to Fargo).

Yikes. We just had about 10 minutes of golf ball size hail, and there was a possible touchdown about 2 miles from us. Scary stuff.

I thought I heard some thunder. Evidently there is some massive hail in this storm.

Massive Tornado has hit the city of Moore Oklahoma, just south of Oklahoma City. At least two schools look totally decimated-children might have been sheltering in them
