Not really a thread for anything but nostalgia and just because I am feeling reflective lately. Expect other top tens to come, for the same reasons.

In this thread I am addressing PC Game; not including games that I play on a console, PC only.

Your mileage may vary and I am definitely not saying that these are the ten best games of all time. Just that they are the ten games that I have the best memories of, or most enjoyment from. The list is not in any particular order.

Starflight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starflight) - I loved this game. The feeling of exploring space, collecting resources, deaing with other races and battling it out against them. Seemed to have a lot of places to go and enough ways to upgrade to keep the game moving along.

Earl Weaver Baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Weaver_Baseball) - This game combined two passions, PC games and baseball. I loved being able to create my own stadiums and teams. Used to have leagues with friends and spent countless hours playing this game. Really got a good feel for some of the historical players in the game from this game.

Front Page Sports Football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_Page_Sports_Football) - The original blew me away; even though it took forever to run a week of games. The other versions all added something extra to it but still nothing tops that feeling of "what a find" when stumbling across the game.

Front Page Sports Baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_Page_Sports_Baseball) - The 96 version tops them all. LOVED the soundtrack. I used the 98 version to run leagues but loved playing 96 for my own games. Went through several seasons of that game; to the point where I remember the feeling when I had a player reach 300 homeruns. It just brought back the memories of baseball with my dad.

Alpha Centauri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_Alpha_Centauri) - Thought this game was much better than the Civ series. Something just made it easier to grab my attention. Maybe that there is no history attached to the sides that you chose and that you get to start with better technology earlier.

Half Life 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half_Life_2) - This one had a nice story and loved the physics gameplay. A lot of fun to play. Nothing sentimental, just fun.

Lords of the Realm 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lords_of_the_Realm_II) - Loved this game. Would play this for hours. Loved the combat within the game; the castle sieges and the open field battles. Using your troops in the right formation and coming away with victory. Hate RTS games and loved that only the battle was RTS.

Knights of the Old Republic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic) - Not a Star Wars guy but really liked this game. I liked the plot twist and the freedom to let my inner dark side out.

Deus Ex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex) - Another great game with freedom to chose and having choices that affected later gameplay.

Football Manager 2011 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_Manager_2011) - Not a soccer guy by any stretch of the imagination but this is a great game. I have not played this enough because of some time limits lately but this will easily rank up there in my play list at some point.

I like a lot of your choices. I'll add a few:

System Shock 2 - One of my favorite games of all time, bar none.

The Operative: No One Lives Forever - another old school first person shooter. Loved the humor and the game

Front Office Football - I've always loved the game. Still do.

Deus Ex
Baldurs Gate 2

Those two are by far and away my top 2, the only games I go back to on a consistent basis. After that it's going to probably be a bit hazy... these are off the top of my head and in no particular order

Championship Manager 2
Sim City 3000
TCY
Theme Park
FBCB1
Civ 2
EHM 2007
Unreal Tournament

I'm sure there is a lot of stuff more recently that I'm completely missing, but most of these are my high school years of having time to play games (and no console to play them on)

EDIT - I just went through my Steam list and I can't believe I left GTA: San Andreas off. So I now have 11

My top ten hasn't really changed that much over the years

1. Thief: The Dark Project - Totally immersive first person action adventure. Perhaps the first first person "sneaker" there ever was. Getting in fights? Not a good idea. You come equipped with a plethora of arrow types (moss, damage, ropes, water for torches, etc). Total freedom in the game too. COuld solve the objectives in any order you wanted. PLus it was great dark fantasy. Sooo creepy. Great elements of Survival-horror in it. And what a story. YOu think you are the center of the universe in your own little thieving world stealing from lords and soon unravel an epic battle of gods. And the main character was pitch perfectly sarcastic. Thief 2 even improved the gameplay with imrpoved lockpicks and food and sprawling world. Overall these employ the best use of sound of any game I"ve played as it incorporated sound in the gameplay. Ever play Assassin's Creed or any of those covert ops type games? They have this one to thank for it.

2. Unreal - When it comes to flat-out first person shooters, none have drawn me in more than this one. YOu start as a prisoner aboard a prison spaceship headed for a prison planet, when your ship is drawn by a tracot beam onto an unknown planet and crash lands. OKay there's the background...GO! WOnderful graphics for its time, HUGE areas, great setups and gags (Exitting the first ship for the first time is breathtaking, while I defy anyone in the lights out tunnel not to shit their pants). Every other year I play this again from the beginning. Each time I get a little further. Still haven't finished the thing. :) For me this is an example of how good a game can be when it has excellent level design.

3. Out of this World - Most games don't have veried gameplay especially in an action game, especially way back in 1991. But here comes this sci-fi game where you log onto your particle accelerator computer and are zapped onto another planet. Pretty much every area was a new challenge. DIfferent gameplay, different tactics, had coop and everything. shooting, sneaking, LOTS of platforming, very arcade game style stuff too. And even on VGA it was way ahead of its time in both cinematic storytelling and emtion. The half LIfes would not have existed without this one.

I would be amiss without showing this: the many death scenes...

4. Sam n Max Hit the Road - Ripped from an underground comic, the Noir-talking suit-wearing dog Sam and the anthropomorphic nakes bunny-like creature Max drive around and solve crimes. Using the often-used point and click adventure game system, but this is not fairy-tale jazz. Hilarious smart mouthed comedy at its best. Excellent writing, voice acting and a really challenging adventure.

5. Wizardry (I): Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord - One of the first computer RPGs ever and still my favorite. A dungeon crawl for all dungeon crawls. You have one goal. Gather your party of 6 and Kill Werdna the evil archmage at the bottom of his 10 level dungeon. What could be simpler? (That is if the local healer doesn't turn your mage into ashes trying to resurrect them) Ready???? TILTOWAIT!!!!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-iOZzwIlMA

6. The Orange Box/Half Life 2/Portal - Okay this possibly isn't fair to have these in the same listing but Valve really out did themselves. Earlier I had HL2 down at 13 and since I just played and solved Portal I have to bump this way up.About Portal: Sensational game. I'm not even sad that Portal is short. Very satisfying. Best villain ever. I think I waited this long to get it a) because I didn't want to buy the orange box when it was 50 bucks and b) I was already tired of the fame portal had reached...as in.. it had reached MOnty Python and the Holy Grail standards. Everyone quoting it. Everyone mentioning it. But it is a terrific experience. The endgame was intense. :) Challenging puzzle and fun. My original reaction to HL2:
Pretty big rollercoaster. Took the sprawling action adventure story to a heightened level. I still don't like a few of the levels but still really good. The opening sequence alone is worth playing. Those guys with the gas masks...perfect touch. They always creeped me out. Awesome voice acting by Robert Culp and Robert Guilluime. Plus the opening sequence was just so damn intense. Sadly I did not play Half Life 1 when it first came out. Didn't get to it until 10 years later...and it just did nothing for me with the likes of thief and unreal. But the HL2 series definitely hits the spot. Love how the person playing in these links plays like I play, especially the second one...throwing random furniture out the windows...:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMENMAyNXHM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npaFKBOqPbk

I'm also remembering the parts of HL2 I did not like and now realizing that I think it had more to do with my system not being able to handl too many monsters at the same time. I really should play it again because the immenseness of the game was fantastic. I remember seeing a bridge in the distance, then suddenly I had to cross the bridge....then I was underneath the bridge and the tiny bridge in the distance was now immense and falling off meant a long drop to death. As games like Minecraft and HL2 show, sometimes it is just wandering around that is the game....at least before you're swarmed with enemies again.

7. Zork II/Wishbringer/Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Before the complex notion of "graphics" in game, there was a company in Massachusetts known as Infocom. They wrote what they called interactive adventure games (These 3 were my favorites). Basically a cross between a novel and a game. YOu read, you moved in a direction, you picked things up, you tried them on other things. Yet they were so engrossing, the worlds so immersive, occasionally I find myself thinking, "I remember that one game with the great pictures... oh wait no it was an infocom game." And if you've never tried to get a babelfish, well, then you can't really call yourself a gamer.

8. Starcraft - Favorite RTS. Strangely I'm seeing a lot of scifi games in my list, when I really prefer fantasy genre more. BUt Starcraft was just so much more fun for me than Warcraft with its coop mode and differnt AIs for opposing NPC players. Especially the fact that the Zerg and Protoss each had their own bags of tricks. You can play a defensive game or offensive, aerial game or ground. There are options galore for each race. Sure you can do mutalisk swarm, sure you can do reaver drops, sure you can send in a fleet of Carrion ships or even a zealoy rush, but I think there is no more giddy feeling than succeeding with a crackling rush.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfbE-GdT1ZY

9. World of Warcraft - Okay there's a reason for all those damn users. I've tried many MMos over the years and have been bored to tears by them. Then finally, on the April before its second expansion came out, I gave it to myself as a present for finishing my taxes. I tried out the different races and classes and found one that I really liked. MMOs chief fault I feel is that it is stagnant and unemotional. But when you find the right character, you create your own story in this game. So much to explore, to quest, to do in this game. And really almost every race I tried there was a different feel and thought behind it. That too was a nice touch. There is just so much to do in this game. Still haven't done it all. Yes there WILL be areas and sthings you hate. But when there is this much content, you can easily just stop what you don't like and find 10 other things you do.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlDjdFh56Co

10. Diablo - The classic that has not been able to be repeated. Sure Diablo 2 had more sprawl, more characters, more dungeons, more quests, blahblahblah. But Diabloe was the one. It had the eeriness, that intensity, that urgency, that relentless barrage of hellish creatures coming at you. YOu felt like you were from this town and on this quest. SOmething about the music and characters and voices of this game was just perfect. And oh what a kickass dungeoncrawl full of fighting and STUFF!

11. Ancient Domains of Mystery/Rogue/LARN/nethack, etc - ASCII real time dungeon adventures. Look in the thread about Angband to find out more about what these addictive little buggers are.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9l_U7WSqNo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aINYtZKGZW4

12. Sanitarium - Another adventure game with an often used beginning...you have amnesia, you are in a dark asylum cell and are wrapped up in bandages. The story does to some really far-out places and employs the grotesque very effectively even though everything is still little pixels. Great use of sound and voice acting. And the game itself was very challenging and satisying. In different chapters you become different characters which helps the story stay fresh too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gL2957zF36w

13. Alone in the Dark
Obviously I do like a good horror game, the survival horror genre is a favorite of mine. So I would be amiss if I didn't have this one on my list. The one that invented the genre. Directly based on the works of HP Lovecraft...I've never been more frightened of polygons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKpAyc_GvPg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-6PIjPe8pA

14. Lighthouse: The Dark Being - Really really good game. It was like if they took MYST and actually gave it a story. Similar types of puzzles that involved engineering and machines.

15. Castle Wolfenstein - First PC game I ever bought. For the Apple IIe. Oh yeah! Kill those nazis! Schweinhunt!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uTBVapjyYA

Others I still like:

King's Quest 7 - I liked all the adventure games out of Sierra, but my favorite was 7 that flipped back and forth between two different characters to solve the whole thing. Nice and toony graphics made it appealing. Intuitive clues and object matchings (unlike some of its predecessors). Just a really fun game.
Doom 2 - Sneaky with its level design. Cool with its new monsters. Still really freaking scary and intense. This game really opened up what level design in an FPS could be.
Civ - Doesn't matter which. The fun of researching and resource building has never been better
HEroes of Might and Magic 3 - turn based quests and monsters. SOunds pretty dull...until 9 hours later, you're still playing it! :)
Baldur's Gate - This was probably my favorite of all the D&D translations into computer RPGs

1. Football manager series (Fm2007 was the best IMO)
2. Jagged Alliance 2 (Awesome game i have played this many times over)
3. Civilization Series (especialy 2 and 4)
4. Morrowind (Didn't enjoy Oblivion as much as this)
5. Total War series (Rome and MTW2, hopefully Shogun 2)

Oldies: Panzer General, Police Quest, Sim City, Alpha Centauri.

Sports Sims: Out of the park baseball, Eastside Hockey manager, FOF, Madden before they killed franchise mode.

For my list, I'm not going to go by best games, but instead the games that brought me the most enjoyment throughout my life (that I can think of this particular moment).

Sonic the Hedgehog
Madden
Out of the Park Baseball
Warcraft
Starcraft
World of Warcraft
Civilization
Streets of Rage
Street Fighter
Front Office Football

Most of these games, I'd have no interest in playing today.

A fair few of these are somewhat archaic ...

System Shock
Fantastically atmospheric RPG, really got into this when it came out.

Lords of Midnight (not really a PC title - came out of the Spectrum)
Was a fantastic turn based strategy game with the added hook that you had to 'recruit' your army and who you approached people with affected whether they joined you.

Chaos (another 'board game' from the Spectrum)
A simple but 'deep' board game converted to computer, incredibly addictive ... there are a fair few emulator versions kicking around.

Civilisation
Master of Magic (Civ clone w/added magic)
Warlord series (any non-RTS ones)
All deep strategy games - always appealing to me :D

Eastside Hockey Manager
Out of the Park Baseball
Front Office Football
Fast Break Basketball
All very good sports sims :D

PS - Left my own sims out of this ...

Planescape: Torment
XCom
Civ 4
Fallout
Secret of Monkey Island
Half Life 2
Front Page Sports Football
Front Office Football
Witcher
Company of Heroes

Good list.

In no particular order:

Planescape: Torment - Still the gold standard in terms of writing and storytelling in my book.

X-Com - An incredibly fun strategy game that has nothing has come close to equaling, despite repeated attempts

Civ 4 + BTS - The best turn-based strategy game of all time, hands-down

Baldur's Gate II + SOA - Massive, amazing story to go along with tough combat encounters. Best D&D adaptation.

Ultima 7 + Black Gate - The world that was created has still never been equaled. Excellent story, too.

Front Page Sports: Football - Brilliant game and it's a shame that Madden somehow won the NFL war

World of Warcraft - Could have been Everquest, but I spent 5 years of my life playing WoW, almost always having a great time. Of course, I think it's now a shell of what it used to be.

Football Manager 2011 (pretty much the entire series) - The premier text-based sports sim, it's a grognard's game

SimCity 2K - The best of a great series

Fallout - Awesome world, excellent story, many options...showed what a modern RPG could be

Honorable mention: Flight Simulator, Diablo, Mass Effect 2, Sam & Max, Zork...

(in chronological order)

Wizardry 1 - I had played some rudimentary D&D with a friend and brother, but this was the first D&D experience on the computer. Played the heck out of this one. I asked my mother what a cuisinart was as a result of it (best sword in the game I found).

FPS Football - I remember a salesman talking to another one about this game, talking about how it did things right compared with other football games on the market (he was specifically talking about how it had fair catches). Whether he had nefarious motivation or not with the idle chit-chat, I got more than my money's worth out of this.

Pools of Darkness - I loved the gold box games, this was the most memorable one to me as I recall the final series of battles was incredibly tough (for me at least).

Empire / Empire Deluxe - Very simple concept, but tremendous strategic game. The AI wasn't great by any means, but you could offset this by turning up their production / combat efficiency for a good challenge. A friend of mine and I played the heck out of this one, both against each other and as teammates, and had numerous memorable games over the course of 12 or so years.

Civilization (or maybe Civ II, can't recall) - This was the first game where I experienced 'Just one more turn'...and somehow played through the night until 7am without realizing where the time went.

Age of Empire - My first RTS (and one of the few I ever really enjoyed playing). Another game I got a lot of mileage out of with cooperative / competitive play with friends, fun campaigns, user creations, and so on.

Magic the Gathering: Shandalar - Played the actual card game only once, the computer game was actually my first exposure to playing MTG. I enjoyed seeing the card combos and going, "Ah ha, that's clever" or the rare occasion when I pulled one off myself. I still find it to be a fun game to pull out every now and then.

Balder's Gate II (+expansion +mods) - Probably my all-time favorite. Fun battles, party and character planning was very enjoyable, great villain, good humor. Some tremendous mods for this one. I actually can't really play the game now because I've played it so much in the past.

Planescape Torment - The first time I recall enjoying a game where I didn't at least moderately enjoy the combat. I don't want to spoil anything in case someone hasn't played it (you should if you like a cool story), but the most memorable point in the game was near the end. It was a big surprise to me, I got a big smile on my face and said, "That's awesome!* Brilliant."

Omerta - Not sure if browser-based games count, but it was great fun playing with other FOFCers and rising to prominence in a number of difference families. A stressful sort of fun, but made some long-term online friends from it and overall it was a fun gaming experience I never before had (and never again will).

Honorable Mention:

Knights of the Chalice - I have to give props to this indy game for a great modern gold box-like experience. Excellent AI, challenging but fun, and very nice translation of open game license version of AD&D 3.5 rules. I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

Roguelikes, especially Tales of Middle Earth - Challenging, unforgiving, sometimes frustrating, but also lots of fun planning out a battle against a tough opponent and weighing risk/reward over and over again. ToME gets the nod over the others for having a nicely fleshed out story (courtesy of Tolkein), quests, themed dungeons, and challenging special levels with no teleport allowed.

Thought of a couple that I can't believe I forgot to mention, may need to expand that list. :)

Autoduel - Loved playing this game. Very basic game but it felt deep and more importantly it was fun.

Duke Nukem 3D - Remember trying to match up comm ports to dial up to a friend's PC just to play head to head.

FOF 2007 - seems to be the version that I got the most mileage from.

Sticking strictly with PC games (or at least the ones that I played on the PC) and steering clear of MMOs:

1. Fallout 3: Loved it so much that I bought it twice, first on the 360 then for the PC so I could start messing around with community-created mods. No other single game has ever eaten up so much of my life. For all of its quirks it is still, in my mind, the ultimate open-world RPG.

2. Steel Panthers - World at War: To this day I am still amazed at the amount of detail and replay-ability this completely free game has. I've never been into RTS games because I end up feeling rushed. I much prefer to plot things out to the Nth detail, which SPWaW allows you to do. A must-have for any World War II tactical buff.

3. X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter: My all-time favorite joystick game. I played this a ton during college, and used to have a blast playing co-op over the LAN in the dorm. Nothing makes you feel like quite the X-Wing hotshot as seeing a Star Destroyer go up in a fiery conflagration after the determined efforts of you and your wing-mates.

4. Hearts of Iron II: I've always felt that what Steel Panthers is for World War II tactical sims, Hearts of Iron II was for strategic sims. Yes the AI has its weaknesses (what AI doesn't), but the joy of building up your nation's military infrastructure and then conquering half the world is difficult to match.

5. Civilization: As was mentioned previously, this was the original "just one more turn" game for me. There was a definite thrill in taking one civilization after another from humble beginnings to world domination. Hmmm...maybe I'm just a closet megalomaniac?

6. Diablo II: Was and still is the best "action RPG" as far as I'm concerned. Spent countless hours playing this both solo and co-op. I think what I always appreciated the most about the game was the dark, brutish nature of survival in the Diablo world, a-la Hyboria.

7. Trade Wars: The first true "online" game I ever played, always a blast and always tears to be shed when a BBS or server reset itself. A great game from back in the day when you still had to use a little imagination.

8. Front Office Football: I haven't fired FOF up in ages, but its still the best football sim ever, as far as I'm concerned. And I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get much objection, given the audience here. :D

9. MechWarrior - Mercenaries: I played a ton of tabletop BattleTech back in the day, and playing as a Merc was always the most entertaining way to run a campaign. Then along comes Mercenaries which allows you to basically do the same thing on your PC. Brilliant.

10. Panzer General: My first real introduction to PC wargaming. Definitely simple compared to things like Steel Panthers and Hearts of Iron, but I still have a lot of fond memories of this game.

1. Everquest - I never look back with nostalgia on WoW. EQ? Absolutely. In EQ if you died you truly suffered for it, and you couldn't find out everything about the game on the interwebs immediately. There was a sense of wonder and exploration that is impossible in any new game. You couldn't look up everything about a new zone, and you were terrified every time you turned a corner b/c what if there's some giant mob there who's going to one shot you. We'd never put up with it today, we're all pussies now. But that sense of exploration in a game is something I look back on really, really fondly now.

2. Football Manager - I believe I've now spent more time with this series than any other single player game ever. This game taught me about the sport.

3. Civilization - The ultimate "one more turn... oh shit the sun is coming up" series for me.

4. Railroad Tycoon - it launched every other crappy tycoon game ever, but this one was truly great.

5. Starcraft - best RTS ever, a number of us installed this on our work PC's and would play lan games after hours during my co-op job in college.

6. Fast Break College Basketball - I've played the hell out of single player, and while SirFozzie gets the credit for starting the online league, I've run it for about 7 real years now, its been a great gaming experience.

7. Computer Baseball - I eventually owned Microleague baseball, but the very simple Atari "Computer Baseball" game is the one that brought out my text sim geek traits as a kid. All it had were 30ish historic teams. The 75 Reds were my favorite, 27 Yankees were the root of all evil for being better than my 75 Reds. I had notebooks full of stats since it couldn't keep season long stats.

8. Dragon Age - I don't have the long history with RPGs that most have here. Fallout was a console game for me, and the classics like Baulders Gate I never really got into. Dragon Age sucked me in and is one of the few that I played all the way through.

9. Total War Series - I've owned most of them, with recent incarnations as long as you wait for a few patches its still a really, really good series. I spent large amounts of time with Shogun waaaaaay back when.

10. League of Legends - I'll give a nod to the game I'm playing currently. I never got into dota (defense of the ancients) which I believe was the first in this genre. But I've been playing LoL for about a year and a half now off and on and the evolution of ranked matches and ratings has shown me that I'm just average at best at the damn game compared to many, I thoroughly enjoy it and expect I'll be playing it for a long time to come.

Thought of a couple that I can't believe I forgot to mention, may need to expand that list. :)

Autoduel - Loved playing this game. Very basic game but it felt deep and more importantly it was fun.

Holy crap I so remember this. Gotta love the Apple IIe :)

Another great title for this was original Castle Wolfenstein. NO, not the doom precursor... but this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsTwTTwmCLw

No particular order:

The Civs, original through IV

Gold Rush -- early Sid Meier game that I played with my daughter every Saturday morning until we found the gold mine. Possibly the best gaming experience of my life.

FOF

OOTP

Panzer General and PG2

Heroes of Might and Magic original through IV. Version V sucked, awaiting VI this September. Dubious.

Might and Magic series of RPGs

Warlords III

Age of Wonders -- bought the Steam versions and beginning to rediscover this one.

Oregon Trail
Quake series, mainly for multiplayer including the original Team Fortress.

It's hard to figure out how old, classic games fits in the top 10. Here's what I can think of, focusing on series:

1. Civilization series (2, 4, 5 and Civ4Col)

2. Impression Games series (Pharaoh, Zeus, etc.)

3. Gothic series (1, 2 and esp. 3)

4. Mafia series (1 and 2)

5. OOTP5 (best one of the series for real historical leagues)

6. FBCB ('nuf said)

7. MoH/CoD WW2 (PC) (some excellent chapters in each)

8. SimCity (original) (what got me into PC gaming)

9. Pirates Gold! (for years my favorite game)

10. Conquest of the New World (best 4x game not named Civ)

Honorable mention: Imperialism 2, King's Quest series, Battleground series (Civil War wargames) and Railroad Tycoon.

Master Of Orion
X-Com
Earl Weaver Baseball
Those Three are in a league of their own.

Front Page Sports Football
Empire ....still a favorite in my wargaming memories.
Railroad Tycoon
F-19 Stealth Fighter
MS Flight Simualtors through 2004

I'd round out the crop with newer titles
Football Manager

In no particular order except for #1:

1) FBCB (and FBCB 2) - I've spent more hours playing this than any other PC game, and it ain't even close.
Fast Break Basketball - Haven't fired Brian's pro game in at least 18 months, but spent a ton of time on it over the years, especially once I started importing my FBCB draft classes.
Half-Life 2 - Although the 2nd half of the game doesn't live up to the 1st IMO, still an awesome experience.
Fallout 3 - I was hooked from start to finish. Loved New Vegas as well, but FO3 was the better overall game.
Baldur's Gate - Most people prefer the sequel, but me and my buddy used to stay up all night playing the original. The joys of being a geek!
X-Com - I was never good at it, but I spent many many hours watching my little soldiers die.
Jagged Alliance 2 - Oh how I wish for the next great turn-based strategy game.
Crusader Kings - The only Paradox game to thus far suck me in completely, thanks mostly to my interest in the setting.
Total War - Prior to Shogun 2 (which I enjoy very much) I hadn't played them since Rome, but I spent a ton of time on that game, as well as the original Shogun.
C&C: Red Alert - I still remember how much trouble we had setting up "LAN parties" back in the pre-windows days to play the various C&Cs. Red Alert got the most burn.

1. Earl Weaver Baseball. I played that game. And played it. On those off years where you couldn't buy a season disk, a friend and I would create them ourselves. One year we literally played every single game of an MLB season. We'd take turns passing the disk back and forth to avoid burnout. I remember keeping the games running through the night and would wake up once in a while, start the next game and go back to sleep. It was insane.
2. Everquest. The magic of being in a world for one of the first times with all your friends, and all these cool things happening. I did all kind of dumb things in the first game, start a group with 2 wizards and try to manage aggro by taking turns casting and hoping the mobs would mostly be stuck in between us. I had so many real life friends all together on the same server. I tried the same thing in Rift and it all fell apart. We're in 3-4 different servers due to server congestion fracturing all of our plans. Then all the friends that managed to make my server have already quit. Plus we're all in our late 30's and most with kids, you just can't capture that magic anymore.
3. Out of the Park Baseball. I love that game. I play and play and play. My custom Canadian Baseball League has gone from 2006 - 2020 and I have been playing 2-4 games a week for my team. When I've been forced to get rid of my all-time leaders due to injuries or insane contract demands I've felt horrible. I was overjoyed when seeing one of my players make 500 home runs. After having played that many seasons it feels like a real world with real history.
4. Front Office Football. Hey, it's why we're all here, right? I think it was around the year 2000-2001, maybe FOF2? I had a really long-term league and shared with a co-worker. We'd each play a season and then pass it back. The cool thing about that was that we could talk about our league every day over lunch at work and it wouldn't be boring because the other guy was also playing your league.
5. Front Page Sports Football. I remember being in a convenience store reading an article about this new game coming out, it would have a career mode where players would progress and then eventually age out and retire. You'd have drafts, etc. NOTHING in the world sounded better to me than that. I still remember reading about it, and that was 16 years ago? And in execution it was everything that I hoped it would be. The game has obviously been eclipsed in terms of depth with all the text sims that came later but this is really the game that started my love of dynasty games.
6. Front Page Sports Baseball. Same as football, loved it as well, I think I played more football because you could get through the seasons quicker.
7. Diablo 2. Addicted. 10 years later, no one has been able to make a better version and many have tried.
8. Championship Manager 93-94. Sure future games have been better, but for a soccer newbie like me, it was easy to play this game and plow through several seasons, developing my team even though I didn't know the difference between a 4-4-2 and 4-3-2-1-blastoff. It's only been this past version, Football Manager 11 where I've made it as far in terms of seasons. No career game has been as good at making you feel that you're managing actual people as opposed to a series of numbers that produce stats for your team.
9. Baseball for Windows. The sound of Ernie Harwell calling my team's games was awesome. Again, nobody has been able to replicate this. In most cases it was pretty smooth, and even after playing 80 games for my team, I'd still hear calls that I hadn't heard before. This game captured the magic of being at the cottage on a Saturday afternoon during the summer, sitting on the dock with a portable radio and listening to my favorite team play an afternoon game.
10. Links 386. I don't even like golf. I played for a few years and quit. But I love playing golf PC and console games. It's just relaxing to "hit the greens" and click 2-3 times to simulate a shot. It's strategic, and therapeutic for me.
11. Eastside Hockey Manager. I met Riz at E3 one year, he was a super nice guy. He showed me the ins and outs of the game even though I was essentially working for another vendor and would not help him sell anymore than 1 copy of the game (the one I would buy). This to me came in at the time that Football Manager was getting too complicated for me and hard to get into, but as a hockey lover I was able to embrace a lot of that same engine and vibrant world. I still keep playing this one to this day.

In no particular order:

MULE, 7 Cities of Gold, Pirates (orig) - many hours with friends on C-64. Same group with boardgames llike Avalon Hill Squad Leader, Diplomacy, Bull Run.

Knights of the Sky - spent tons of time on this on an old 264 (I think). I never did get into Red Baron.

F19 Stealth - same time around KotS. Great time doing nothing getting to target and then launching a maverick.

Pirates (from 2006'ish) - much better graphics than original and other older versions. First game with my son looking over my shoulders and him really playing.

Space Rangers 2 - really wish they would come up with v3 and add additional goodies.

Front Page Football - forget the version I really enjoyed (not the last one 97?). Best drafting until FOF.

Dragon's Age - haven't gotten into 2 yet. Wish it was more open ended.

Civilization - I think I enjoyed I and II the most. Latest version is missing something ... or we've just grown apart.

Just finished Portal and for sure this bumps the Orange Box /HL2 up on my list. Sensational game. I'm not even sad that it's short. Very satisfying. Best villain ever. I think I waited this long to get it a) because I didn't want to buy the orange box when it was 50 bucks and b) I was already tired of the fame portal had reached...as in.. it had reached MOnty Python and the Holy Grail standards. High Heat Baseball..... how could I have forgotten that?

Loved that game. Was it 2000 that was the best of the lot, been a while. That game had what other baseball games need; a way to visually recognize pitches better than any other game. I find few other games where the battle between the pitcher and batter has been so perfectly represented.

I played in/commished high heat leagues for years. Definitely an alternative to ootp. It had so many bugs tho that it would crash for any little reason when running sims.

I DID like how it handled minor leagues a ton better than ootp. I liked the high heat editor too where you could see a player's true behind the scnes expected numbers. NO vagueness. Also had a blast running the allstar game and the home run derby. Used the players from the league and actually played it out realtime. Lots of nicew buttons and whistles. But man 3DO as a software company really sucks. That's not the first game I've seen them underdevelop , prematurely release and then not support. (They ruined the Twisted Metal series with 3 and 4)

Now, with that out of the way, the few hours I spent with this demo version of Pirates of Black Cove were great fun! Comparisons to Sid Meier’s Pirates! are inevitable as the game map is situated in exactly the same part of the world: the Caribbean. Pirates of Black Cove also looks like a graphically modernized version of Sid Meier’s updated classic. Ship control and gunnery are also set up identically, with the Q, W, E and S keys moving and maneuvering the player’s ship faster and slower as well as to port and starboard. The controls are easy to learn and most players will set sail in no time.

Some of mine:

Half-Life - The first real shooter with a great plot, I felt like I WAS Gordon Freeman

Deux Ex - As others have said, the freedom to do whatever you wanted in this game was incredible

EHM 2005/2007 - Still play it

Age of Empires 2 - Better than the first one, this game was a lot of fun for what it wanted to accomplish

WoW - Haven't really played in over a year now, but it was all I did for nearly 4 years. Most addicting game I ever played (had almost 100 mounts for my warlock)

Mount & Blade - Average graphics, somewhat repetitive gameplay at times, but this game was/is a lot of fun for fans of medieval genre. Riding a horse at full speed and lopping a guy's head off with a broad sword is pure gold

Max Payne - PC version was a lot of fun, bullet-time is great

Civ 3 - Only game I played for nearly a year. Sid Meier is a gaming genius.

Morrowind - Fantastic gaming experience

1. World of Warcraft - like so many, I've played hundreds of hours
2. OOTP - I've been in so many online leagues over the years. Boughts every version since version 2
3. Master of Orion - This was the first PC game that I ever really got into. It was really awesome when it came out.
4. Civilization IV - IMO, the best Civ ever
5. Baldur's Gate II - Pure awesomeness
6. X-COM - This, the 2nd and Apocalypse are all great games. Hard, but great.
7. Roller Coaster Tycoon - Really, really fun game.
8. Alpha Centauri - I really wish this would get a sequel modeled after Civ IV/V
9. Command & Conquer: Red Alert - This is the game that got me interested in RTS games.
10. SimCity 2000/3 - 3 was the last SimCity I ever really played.
10a. Rise of Nations - This game rocked.

Since I had to write them down to remember some, I went ahead and put them in order.

10. Close Combat - A Bridge Too Far.

I'm more of an operational level type player, but I really enjoyed this game. It was the only one of the series I played, but I played this a lot.

9. Talonsoft Games - West Front, East Front, etc.

West Front was my favorite of the series, but I really enjoyed these. Good graphics for the time and great game play.

8. Front Office Football - Wasn't my first text sim, but it was about my favorite sport. Though I might argue it's greatest achievement was helping me find this forum where I get all sorts of good info, the game itself was fun. Still have the original game.

7. Rollercoaster Tycoon - Just a fun game to play. First game my wife got addicted too as well and helped her understand my gaming addiction.

6. Panzer General (Allied, Pacific) - Great war series. My favorite straight war series ever. Was very excited to find a version that works on Windows 7.

5. Railroad Tycoon - Liked the first 2 much better than the third. Always been a train buff and my kids all love Thomas. One of the few games I could spend an entire night playing.

4. Football Manager - In all its various forms. Think I started playing in 1998 or so. Not nearly addicted to it as I used to be, but it's still the best PC sports game ever and I play it probably just as much as I play Madden. I find PC gaming much more relaxing for some reason.

3. Europa Universalis - I'll include Victoria and HOI in this group as well. Victoria was one I had a soft spot for, but EU III is just an amazing game. Love the openness and strategy to it. Best friend from school and I played the heck out of this online.

2. SimCity - Tough to choose between this and Europa but I think the kicker is if I had a Saturday to blow, I'd be more likely to play this. 4 is the best version.

1. Civ - Even though I hated 3, I loved 2, 4, and 5 is growing on me. If I start a game up, it's literally all I play for a week or two. And unlike any other game, I can repeatedly fire it up without getting bored.

I never played KOTOR though it ranks as my favorite console game ever. Does it and KOTOR2 work on Windows 7? If so, I'll pick them up cheap sometime.

Honorable Mention: Plants vs. Zombies, Traffic Giant, Age of Empires, Age of Rifles, Medieval Total War I, and Rise of Nations.

I don't think I could do a top 10 if I had to restrict myself to games in the last, say, ten years. But in no particular order:

Police Quest
SimCity 2000
Front Office Football (the original)
CM 99/00 (where I finally started to 'get' soccer)
Torchlight
Civ IV: BtS
Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire
World Hockey Manager (although this is on my laptop, which is on its last legs, and I've no idea if I could transfer it to my desktop)
Neverwinter Nights

I'm not sure I'd include SimTower in my top ten, but it was a game I certainly enjoyed and wouldn't mind playing again.
