Pulling out of game specials, Frozen Synapse is out now, including PBEM support. Figured we could use a thread for handing out free copies from those who buy ($20 right now, and you can gift a copy), and handle matchmaking for anyone who wants to PBEM.

Haven't bought my copy yet, probably tonight or this weekend.

Their servers are getting killed right now.
I bought this during beta and gave a copy to thesloppy. Have not played online yet, just the single player mode. This game creates some great moments. When you win, such a good feeling that you master the tactics but when you lose (and you will lose a lot) man does it make you mad. Love it.

My only gripe so far is the loading time when switching in between games. I accidently got 4 games going at once because I was messing with the button that toggles whether you want more games. I'm hoping once the server is less slammed it will get better.

I'm only a couple of missions in, but the game seems pretty fun. I can see where multiplayer will be its best feature. When the guy in the video claims that all of the combat is based on mathematics and not luck, he isn't kidding. I've gotten into a couple of situations where my enemy achieved a better position and I could not find a way to avoid death.

I got a little better at this when I started planning the red teams moves in my replays as well as my own, instead of just leaving them standing there. It's pretty fun when you start to get the hang of it.
I know it goes against the whole principle of their design, but if they had put an RPG/loot wrapper on top of this game I would probably hole up and play it for months.

Got through the hacker mission. Took a few tries but finally had one setup where my shotgun wasn't pinned down from the start. Setup a nice killing zone which pinned down the reds after taking out their snipers.
This is one of those games where it feels great when you see a plan come together. Definitely worth it.

Just failed the hacker mission 4 more times. Every time I seem to find a new way to screw up the first turn and lose my shotgun guy, which pretty much seals my fate. I like the challenge, but if all the subsequent levels are this hard, I might get tired of the frustration.

I think that hacker mission was the toughest I've dealt with so far.
A tip that may or may not help...I kept thinking that the AI didn't know where my guys were (no idea why I thought that) but after getting it through my head that I wasn't sneaking up on them I found myself making better decisions.

This does seem helpful, I've been assuming the same thing. I figured all they knew was the location of qthe hacker, so I made all my assumptions based on them moving in that general direction, looking for those sight lines, etc. My attempts tomorrow will hopefully be more fruitful with this newfound knowledge :)

I could be wrong but I think they look for other movement first. I noticed that I wasable to free up my shotgun if I kept him out of sight that first turn. The red started to move on the hacker at that point and I was able to use the shotgun to get behind a couple that were near him. After getting them I was able to set up a pretty good kill zone with my two.
Though maybe I read too much into what happened when I was successful (finally).
Also, as someone else mentioned; that one seems to be the hardest one so far (the next ones weren't as hard). I was also worried that the missions would keep getting harder.

On the bottom I had the advantage on him with positioning, though was disappointed to lose my shotgun at the bottom in round one. Up top I managed to get good position on his machine gun which came through guessing what he was going to do. I got kind of lucky taking out his last shotgun because if he saw me first I was dead. Thankfully I managed to get behind him, not sure how things would have gone for me if it was one on one between our last shotguns.

I've found playing some things out until you get to the point where you feel comfortable predicting the enemy moves and then making your plans from there helps a lot. In the game I posted the video of I was helped out by planning my opponents move I was helped out by playing through my enemies moves by figuring out that I my machine gun on the bottom right was dead in turn 2, but if I moved him back a bit I'd be able to get my shotgun to the cover in time I could take out his shotgun as he killed my machine gun. Then again by figuring out that my last machine gun up top was dead if his shotgun saw me first, but after mapping out where I thought his shotgun would be going I guess my machine gun could go up and stay out of his expected line of sight.

I can't figure out how the play by email feature works in this game. I gave my free copy to a friend and would like to challenge him to a match but we both keep very different hours, so play by email is optimal for us. I went to create a match last night but when I enter his username it tells me he can't be found on the server... Does this mean that in order to begin a match, he has to be available and online at the time the match is created? If so, thats a real bummer for me. I hope I'm just doing something wrong...

I see the price is now $24.99. I wonder of they raised the price too much? $15-$20 seems a bit more reasonable. They need many more players.

I just logged in - looks like they are migrating to UK1 server. You can finish all current games on old servers.

That is the original price of the game. The game still comes with 2 keys, so if you split the price it's really only 12.50. I haven't played for a few days, because I've been stuck on OOTP lately.

This is the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jJrUY27O0Y) linked earlier that talked me into buying it (along with fellow FOFC recommendations). This was also my introduction to Total Halibut. I've subscribed to his channel now...

Glad I opened up this thread.. thinking about giving this one a try.. although momma said I need to watch my gaming spending. :)
Maybe I'll wait to catch it on sale.
Just the mention of the game Neuromancer has me very interested, I loved that game on the C64.

Now that's an excellent deal.. wonder why they don't just sell it for $12.50? I could fit that under the wife radar. :p

Find a friend, get them to spend the $25, you send the $12.50, then you're golden...
I think this way they expand the player base quicker.
Got your game, johnnyshaka, may have to challenge some others soon as well.

Yeah, I challenged everybody on the list with usernames I could find. Love that you don't have to be online and playing to get challenged adn that you can make moves at your leisure.

This game might be one of the most engrossing first impression games I've ever played.
It's so perfectly laid out, everything just seems well thought out and I love how the tutorial only scratches the surface of what tatics you can deploy. It's more of a learn as you go and I love that.
I went through the tutorial and then on to the first single player mission. I failed the first time, but as I started to learn, the game became its own world and I felt like the outcome is all up to me and my tatical decisions I made.
I had one instance where my guy with a shotgun hid under cover and then popped up and killed two units with one shot, it was quite a exhilarating feeling.
Having to sit through each decision and then try to figure out where the bad guys are going to do, is quite mind taxting.. but extremely fun.
I'll give my neighbor the 2nd copy and he's going to love this game. An absolute steal at $12.50/$6.25.
I'm going to be up late tonight.
With 55 missions and then online play, this game will have plenty of wheels for me. Shoot, the first mission took me quite some time to sit and think about each move.

Once you think you've mastered the solo stuff forget everything you think you've learned if you plan to play dark extermination on multiplayer. :)

I had some real trouble with this level until just now. I've uploaded it. I got a little lucky to start, which is rare, but achieved my goal in record time.

I need to post a Youtube video of my game with johnnyshaka. Absolutely nuts. Small map, all four rocket guys start in the upper left around a small room. The whole game lasted all of 3 turns with all the rockets flying around at the start.

I haven't played this for a while, but right now, it's 50% off on Steam.
That's 2 codes for $12.49, for those that don't have it yet.

So, have you guys been playing much lately? I know I have still have a few matches with some of you in "Waiting for Opponent" stage but, otherwise, I haven't really had much time to play.
Maybe I'll fire out a few challenges tonight.

I haven't been playing much at all lately. I didn't intend to abandon it, but I get distracted by other games and stuck in a rut with something else pretty quick.

Looks like their server consolidation (or something other event) squashed all the ongoing games I had with some of you. I'll re-issue challenges again when I get a little time...perhaps tonight.
