We just selected the draft order for my $$$ fantasy football league. I'm selected at the 4 spot and the guy that is 8 wants to move up. I don't want to just "swap" spots with him - I want some compensation ;)

What should I offer the guy so he can move up?

Thanks for any input!

He should be making you the offer if he wants to move up.

Question is are there going to be players at four that you want that won't be there at eight?

I think the following analysis is right, someone please free to correct...

Using VBD (Value Based Drafting) provided by footballguys.com, the 4th best player (Ray Rice in this case) is worth 99 "value" points. The 8th player is worth 86. So you need to make up 13+ points in the deal, which would be the equivalent of a late 5th/early 6th in a standard 12 team draft.

If you guys swapped firsts and seconds, you would come out 5 points ahead.

This might be a good place to start.

Not sure I'd make the pick based solely on that trade calculator. I think the first criteria is there going to be a player he really wants at 8? Making the trade with no strategy behind it seems like a bad idea.

Agree with this. Assuming it's not PPR, I think there are about 5 good RB's out there in that first tier, Peterson, Foster, Johnson, Rice and Charles.

If you generally like to build your team with RB's, I don't think you can trade that pick, unless you feel the same way about a guy such as MJD or McCoy as you do about the guys in that first tier.

However, if you are comfortable going with a QB such as Rodgers or Vick or a WR such as Johnson in the first round, I say offer your 1st and 2nd rounder for his 1st and 2nd.

Assuming 10 teams, this would probably leave someone live Gore/Turner/Mendenhall as your #1 RB to go with whoever you grab in the first.

Yeah, I should have gave you guys some back round in the league. It's a 10 team PPR league with 6 pnts for all TD's.

I'm thinking dropping down to 8 and rolling the dice to pick either 2 WR's or Rogers and a top tier WR. At four - I'm thinking Rice, Peterson, Foster, or Johnson. Not in that order but I know I'll be able to get one of those top tier RB's.

I guess I'll e-mail the guy to see what he'll offer I just don't know what is a fair pre-draft trade for draft picks...

How about cash money.

Im thinking about 10% of the entrance fee to change 1st rounders. Maybe more.

I think I'd offer a 1st, 2nd, and 4th swap with him. See if he bites :). After all, he's the one that's seeming desperate to land a top 4 stud RB. He obviously believes there is a significant drop-off after that. And sell it just like that .. "Hey man, you're getting one of the 4 studs, there is a big drop off after those guys". This may re-assure him that his thinking is right. This sets you up with the 3rd pick in the 2nd and 4th, and your 4th pick in the 3rd. A steal to drop 4 spots in the first.

If he bites, I'd cross my fingers that McCoy falls to you & nab him up. He's a PPR beast. If McCoy isn't there, then you should be able to land top 3 WR, and grab a RB on the turn.

If he counters with a 1st and 2nd swap, I'd take that too - but I'd make him believe you're really on the fence with that deal; maybe make 'em sweat it a little.

Are QB's 4 or 6 points for a TD?
