My brother was in a really bad accident last night and is on life support. Other than that I don't have much information yet.
I'm not one to post stuff like this on a message board, but I'm 3000 miles away and I've never felt so helpless about something in my life. Thoughts, prayers, anything. I'm not picky.

Thanks everyone.
He's out of surgery. They really don't understand what happened yet. He was passenger in a very bad car accident is pretty much the extent of what they know.
He just got out of surgery. They had to reduce swelling on the brain, remove his spleen, and do some work on his neck. As of right now he has no feeling below the shoulders, but there's some hope there. The doctors said the CT scans looked ok and they believe reducing the swelling on his spine would give him feeling again but we won't know for a few days.
Vitals are great now though. He's in a medically induced coma and will be for awhile. He's got a long road ahead of him, but things are looking better than they were a few hours ago.

A bit more good news. The doctors said there's been slight movement in his fingers since he came out of surgery.
He'll be in a coma for a few days though with no one allowed to see him for more than a minute or two at a time.

More good news.
He's awake and fully alert now. Can shake his head to answer questions and has shown slight movement in one of his arms now.
He's way ahead of where the doctors imagined he'd be in less than 48 hours. They're already talking about rehab and trying to get that set up. My mom has been giving me the updates and this is the first time she showed some excitement when talking about his progress.
I want to thank everyone again for the well wishes and prayers.

The past week has been a roller coaster of good news and bad news. A couple of days after his surgery the doctor told my mom he was paralyzed from the neck down and has been rather negative about everything. He said he wouldn't improve from how he was then which has already been proven wrong.
My mom contacted Duke University's spinal rehabilitation center and he was accepted almost immediately. They asked a few questions about his injuries and his condition and said he meets their criteria. Right now he can shrug his shoulders, he's alert and can answer questions when he's not heavily medicated, and he shows a slight reaction to tickling the underside of his arm. Duke also said that with his injuries it could be a couple of years before the swelling goes down and you can see drastic improvement when that happens. They didn't seem to understand why the doctor is so negative.
They also took him off of the respirator for a short time to see how he'd do and he was able to breathe without it and even take deep breaths when instructed to do so. The doctor tried to say he was still on the respirator, but was corrected by the nurse. The respirator was on, but not helping him breathe. It was there to kick in if he stopped breathing.
Like I said, it's been a roller coaster of ups and downs and the doctor there sounds odd. Duke seems optimistic though and they're just working out transport when he's ready to be moved.

Great news! Giving you warmth and prayers and good vibes! The doctor kinda sounds like a quack. Can you request another?
