There was no mistaking that this was an earthquake. I'm still a bit mentally shaken by it. I think I physically tensed up and my neck is now killing me.

I've got reports from friends from Columbia SC to Ottowa saying they felt it.
Here outside of DC, it was quite the roller coaster. First it was a general rumble and then it got more intense, perceptibly up and down. Outside the house I could barely feel it.
It's strange the helplessness you feel sitting there as your house shakes around you, not even that severely, knowing you are powerless to stop anything in your house from breaking (or the house itself breaking).
We've got some good sized cracks in the ceiling in a few places.
The good news is, the beer is okay.

Holy Crap. I'm sitting in corner cubicle on 3rd floor here in New Jersey. I thought my boss or co-worker were doing their usual prank and shaking the side of my cubicle walls. But when it got more & more intense, I knew what it was. Only the 2nd one I ever experienced. We all evacuated the building. Then management determined we were losing billing time, so we're back in :D
Normally I love where my "office" is, but this is the first time I'm a little leery (steps are in middle of the building).

What is crazy about this quake is how far that 5.9 quake could be felt. On the West Coast, it is not even that often where San Diego can feel a quake that happens in Los Angeles unless the epicenter was in between us. Considering people felt the quake at over 600 miles away is crazy to me since once again it was just a 5.9. In 1994, I was in Los Angeles for the Northridge quake which was a 6.7 and Las Vegas felt a bit of that one (which is a mere 270 miles from the epicenter).

My cousin sleeping downstairs got bonked on the head by a bookshelf, and my mother got briefly trapped in bed when the armoire fell on her.
My brother got thrown out of bed and had his door blocked by a falling bookshelf.
I was, literally, the only one in the house who had no idea we'd had an earthquake. I got woken up by car alarms, and it wasn't until one of the first aftershocks hit that the idea penetrated my consciousness at all. Until then, it was like "y'all are crazy, I'm going back to bed. Oh. OH."

There was a seismologist on CNN while I was watching it a bit ago. She explained that the crust on the east coast is old and contiguous, so the energy from the quake traveled much further than it would on the west coast. Since the west coast has so many fault lines, those break up the crust and will stop the energy from traveling very far from the epicenter.

What's a bit weird to me is how quickly buildings & structures were being called safe for re-entry. I don't even think our building has an emergency plan for earthquakes, or if they do they haven't had to reference that page for many years. There have been isolated cases in Philly/South Jersey with minor building damage. Not sure how "qualified" inspectors have checked it all out in such a short timeframe.

I felt it, we'd just gotten into my mom's car and started it up and it started shaking. I asked if that mechanical problem had been going on long...
I'm just glad it happened about an hour AFTER I had my spinal injection this morning...
Apparently the Goddard Space Flight Center closed down today, probably more precautionary. I know around or buildings at the office (I'm out of the office today after the injection) they're reviewing for damage. Some cosmetic issues have been noted, but given that we build hardware to launch into space...

5.8 is nothing to sneeze at with people who aren't used to it. I know i'd be freaked out in a class two hurricane when in reality, that's not such a big one either.
On the other hand, it's odd to hear people tell stories about how they felt the building shake rather than sway or roll, but that could be the lack of ideal earthquake-proof buildings as well.

Yup. The faults act as (no pun intended) shock absorbers. This is one of the reasons why San Diego does not have as many strong earthquakes like LA, SF and other parts of California do. San Diego has a ton of faults running through the county.

Felt it very strongly in the Chesterfield County government complex. Initial reactions were that something was wrong with the backup generator building construction right outside the door. Then it kept going.
We walked outside and saw all the various public safety uniforms walking around looking puzzled. The trembling stopped, we all said, "You okay?" and seeing nothing wrong, went back inside.
There had been a big emergency preparation meeting for the hurricane that had ended about a half hour before the quake, so most of those folks were out and about and did not pick up on the earthquake because they were driving. When they came back, we were outside and had to clue them in.

Record in the region is 5.9 from 1897, in Virginia. So this was fairly big.
And I heard on the radio that they may upgrade it to a 6.0.

Oh well, earthquakes and hurricanes. Where is that End of The World dude when we need him?
Heh.. we were having a meeting about the hurricane about 90 minutes beforehand as well ;).

That is true, but, usually they aren't. You'll have the main one and then usually you will have about a half dozen or so that are big, but, not quite as big as the first one. So you'll see something like this:
Main: 5.9
AS: 5.4
AS: 5.6
AS:5.2
(AS = After Shock)
and so on.
So, stock up on some water and batteries, since I'm pretty sure the public services are not equipped to deal with earthquakes back there. Don't turn off your gas (if you have it in your home) unless told to by the gas company. Don't turn it back on if you already turned it off. If another one happens, find a door way or the corner of a room or underneath something very sturdy. Do not run outside. That's where most of the people get hurt by stuff falling on them from buildings, power lines, etc...

Yup. The faults act as (no pun intended) shock absorbers. This is one of the reasons why San Diego does not have as many strong earthquakes like LA, SF and other parts of California do. San Diego has a ton of faults running through the county.
Yeah, I knew the fault lines acted like shock absorbers, and I know California has many, but I guess I am limited in my knowledge of fault lines outside of the state. So like when the epicenter is say closer to Vegas, I don't know how many fault lines prevent it from traveling further.
And wow, I am not sure I would want to experience a large earthquake on the East Coast due to this article (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/08/23/scitech/main20096181.shtml) which states that smaller structures would actually experience a factor 5 more shaking.

For further reading, I suggest reading up on the New Madrid fault. I would not want to be anywhere near St. Louis if that one goes off again like it did in 1811/1812.

To the people from the West Coast -
I know you're partially joking.
But in all seriousness - we're simply not built to handle earthquakes in any shape or form. So, yes, 5.8 is a big deal.
Agreed.

LMAO - people saying they felt it here in Boston - I didn't feel a thing. Although come to think of it I did hear a lot of police sirens I guess around that time.I think I might have felt it while home for lunch - my apt building (100 feet from Davis Square) shakes when an 18 wheeler or MBTA goes by above 30mph, and it felt like that, but with no corresponding vehicle. Can't say for certain, and either way I forgot about it within 30 seconds.

Also,:
The first warnings of the earthquake may have occurred at the National Zoo, where officials said some animals seemed to feel it coming before people did. The red ruffed lemurs began “alarm calling” a full 15 minutes before the quake hit, zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson said. In the Great Ape House, Iris, an orangutan, let out a guttural holler 10 seconds before keepers felt the quake. The flamingos huddled together in the water seconds before people felt the rumbling. The rheas got excited. And the hooded mergansers — a kind of duck — dashed for the safety of the water.

The animals first idea was real for our friends with golden retrievers. She called last night to say three dogs got up and started to look agitated--usually this means a knock at the door or a deer out back. Then she felt the quake. The dogs really hated it, but, being dogs, immediately calmed down and got back dog stuff.

wtf. In all actuality and seriousness this 3.6 probably moved the water glass sitting on the table on my side of the bed by about 3cm. I could have easily reached for where I thought the water was and tipped it over onto my dog who sleeps next to the table. Dog would have then freaked out and jumped on the bed and probably smashed my nuts, preventing me from having any more children. So this is pretty serious.

Ha, I KNEW global warming would make it's way in here:
CNN: What caused the earthquake that shook the East Coast?
Rowena Lohman: There are two likely culprits: the motion of tectonic plates past each other, and the melting of large ice sheets and glaciers that used to cover North America during the last ice age around 14,000 years ago. When the ice sheet was on top of North America, it pressed down on the Earth's crust, causing it to sink lower. Since the ice melted and that weight was removed, the crust has been slowly rebounding back to its normal position, and that motion causes earthquakes.
