Everybody's getting a little jumpy around here. The football game was interrupted for a bit for a Bloomberg press conference.
WASHINGTON — Counterterrorism officials on Thursday were assessing a new report of a threat of an attack in New York City or Washington using a car or truck bomb, timed to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, according to several officials briefed on the matter.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, Matt Chandler, called the threat “specific, credible, but unconfirmed.” Another official said American intelligence agencies were urgently pursuing leads overseas in an effort to gauge the seriousness of the threat.

Wonderful. I'm flying to DC on Saturday and will be there through Sunday night.

They always talk about terrorist "internet chatter." I guess that's like a message board of people spreading rumors about upcoming attacks. Probably not unlike our conference movement thread, where 99% of it is garbage. Though "specific" and "credible" are pretty strong words - during the Bush administration we were often warned about "non-specific threats", I guess the current administration has decided to only warn us when it reaches a level higher than that, which is probably for the best - I'm sure they'll be vigilant in NYC and DC.

My guess is that someone within the mainstream media got word of a legitimate threat, and this was the way to get ahead of it and calm the story before it got out of control. I refuse to believe that this is the first real threat since...the London train bombings?

It certainly is here. Security at the US Capitol Complex is the highest I've seen in a long time.

I'm on edge every 9/11 because I believe the symbolism of terrorists striking again on the same date is too powerful an opportunity for them.
This anniversary has me more on edge than ever. If there are terrorists who truly understand American culture, thus Sunday offers a lot of frightening targets. I'm going to be nervous all day.

So you're saying it's Missouri's fault?

They are raising the terror alert in my rural township after word spread that I was having a Muslim guest this weekend.

For real?
LOL, no. Though some around here probably would be scared if they knew I had a Muslim at my house on the anniversary of 9/11.

Kind of fitting that I'll be having this friend down on the weekend of the anniversary... I used to think Muslims were evil until I got to know this fella and a bunch of other Muslims in college my freshmen year when 9/11 actually happened.

It wasn't. It's a nickname. Not a dancer. Real name Sophie. ;)

They call her Jersey offstage in order to hide her true stripper identity.

Haha...you would have to ask her. I don't know what she does for a living. She came into my restaurant last night.

lol...far as I know, girl wasn't a stripper. She was hot, though.
I had to card her last night when she got a frosty cocktail beverage, and I already knew from shooting the shit with the table that everyone called her Jersey. So I commented on it when I carded her and got a "Sophie" ID.

The threat level in Pittsburgh was just changed to "cow", but I think that's related to all the female Steelers fans squeezing into their black and yellow shirts in preparation for Sunday's season opener.
I imagine it'll change to "jackass" tomorrow when the male Steelers fans get around to doing the same thing.
