View Full Version : So how about that Sarah Palin and Glen Rice

This should probably really go in the strange news thread.
It doesn't really make question her political bona fides (of which there are none), but I enjoy salacious news stories as much as the next guy.

New Biography Claims Sarah Palin Had A One-Night Stand With Glen Rice In 1987
The National Enquirer grabbed some details from the upcoming Joe McGinniss Sarah Palin book, and this chunk is too delightful not to share with you immediately. Apparently Palin had a fling with former Heat/Hornet/Laker Glen Rice while he was in college and while she was a sports reporter in Alaska, all the way back in 1987. Rice confirms it in the book.
Here's the Enquirer:
In the book, which will be published on September 20th, McGinniss claims Sarah had a steamy interracial hookup with basketball stud Glen Rice less than a year before she eloped with her husband Todd.
Sarah hooked up with the NBA great, then a 6-foot-8 junior at the University of Michigan when he was playing in a college basketball tournament in Alaska in 1987, the book says. At the time, Sarah, just out of college, was working as a sports reporter for the Anchorage TV station KTUU.
A publishing source told The ENQUIRER that McGinniss claims Sarah had a "fetish" for black men at the time and he quotes a friend as saying Sarah had "hauled (Rice's) ass down."
[...]
In the book, McGinniss quotes Rice as confirming the one-night stand.
We won't subject her journalistic ethics to any kind of scrutiny at this point, because, well, wow. And, oh, don't worry, we are all just as terribly confused as you are.

NBA Live 98 Glen Rice was basically the Bo Jackson of basketball games. He was coming off a season where he shot 47% on 3's and lead the league in minutes played. No stamina issues(which I'm sure Palin appreciated).

But I would honestly rather live in a country where politicians could have some sort of a human life before they decided to run for office. Put another way, I actually trust someone more who in their early twenties says "Cool, I get to hook up with this rich, attractive athlete" instead of "Hmm. Ya, I think it's fair to say Palin didn't have political aspirations at the time and had a very "normal" life for a young attractive woman.....I've always thought that if the Palin story ended with the Alaska governorship it'd be a great, grass roots, rags-to-relative riches, rise to power American success story. She just should have stayed in Alaska.

I have never had political aspirations in my life, but I can say that there were a ton of things I didn't do when I was younger because I didn't want them to come back to haunt me in my professional career, or hurt me on the way to that career. I'm not sure if that makes me creepy, or just a little too mature for my own good at such a young age.

It's not like this will really have any effect on her political career though, it's just funny because it's two famous people who don't appear to have anything in common. I, too, have had a pretty straight laced life. And part of that was/is with an eye to the future. "It'll end up on your permanent record" and all that.
But I still think that that is different than the stories you hear about, for example, John Roberts, Bill Clinton, Elena Kagan, etc. where the degree to which they had their eye on power from a very young age gives me a touch of the creeps.

He is allowed to, but I think that would qualify as being hypocritical...assuming he is smoking. I don't follow political smoking habits to know if smoking was a past or present thing. Then again, being hypocritical doesn't necessary make one wrong.

{scratches head} I can't quite figure the motivation for trying to kill Palin's potential candidacy with something like this. If she happens to enter then Romney is virtually guaranteed the nomination & Obama is all but assured of re-election.
The biggest beneficiary of something like this would seem to be Perry.

The word "hypocritical" is generally used as an insult, but I don't see anything inherently bad about being hypocritical. I think the real badness comes when you try to claim some kind of moral superiority over someone even though you are doing the same thing. Really, hypocrisy is judging someone differently than yourself for the same action.

If they take it seriously. There are plenty of Southern conservatives who will take it as "a smear to try and destroy a strong conservative woman" and ignore it regardless of verity.
If they look at it and say "yeah, that's gotta be true," on the other hand, yeah. Hurts her.
I guess I don't see where it hurts her among her base, which is cognitively dissonant to begin with, but for people who fall somewhere in between 'love her' and 'hate her' in the South, this might flip them to 'no, thanks.'

If Palin comes in tomorrow she takes anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 of Perry's support immediately (and probably at least half of Bachmann's) ... and she keeps it until she's no longer in the race (which I would expect to be the very bitter end).
I'm not sure the math adds up for Perry at that point, Romney gets all the RINO's and the lukewarms while Perry & Palin end up splitting the conservative primary votes. The best thing that could happen for Perry at this point is for it to become a two-man race with Romney (and that's likely to happen as Bachmann probably ends up dropping out before we get to the very end of the trail).

Hypocrisy is not an inconsistency between belief and actions, it's an inconsistency between professed beliefs and actual beliefs. Doing something you're not proud of, in the past or in the present, does not make you a hypocrite. You're not a hypocrite if you're been hooked on smoking for 40 years but express an sincere belief that smoking is bad.
Edit: Sometimes, actions can be EVIDENCE of hypocrisy, but unless we can know what the person sincerely believes today (which I don't think we can in the Palin instance based on a 20-year-old action), then you can't really fairly call someone a hypocrite. If we know she had a conversation last week about how awesome banging black basketball players is and that everyone should do it, that's a different story.

I agree to an extent. But it's also a bullshit move to shame young people who have sex while not admitting that you did so and felt it was a mistake. It's also real easy to criticize in hindsight.
At the same time, I think what she did was perfectly alright. I don't agree with that position of shaming young women who have sex.

As one that will not vote for Obama nor the Republican candidate (unless the House goes back to D), I find it very immature, moronic and ignorant to be calling a candidate or a group of candidates "nuts" or"insane". It makes you look very foolish.
I'm not calling a candidate insane. I'm calling an insane person insane. Three of them, actually.
Actually, that's probably a compliment, all things considered. Because if they're cynically playing to the worst impulses of society in a bid for power, that's not insane. That's just flat out evil.

Perry isn't insane. He's just a politician. Ask people in Texas about him. He'll say or do whatever he thinks will get him elected. I doubt he believes half the stuff he says.
Bachmann is actually crazy.

Nah, least not any more than from the usual wingnut diatribes that often pass for conversation around here. It's just that what you posted was so incomprehensibly off the mark that it warranted at least a brief off the cuff call of bullshit. 's okay though, attacks from the left are a pretty good indication that a candidate (or regular joe for that matter) is on the right track.

I was going to say that there are a handful of liberal FOFCers who would laugh in your face at the notion that I'm "on the left," but Jon, it occurs to me that probably a good 90% of the electorate is on the left, compared to you.
So, hey.

How the fuck did I miss this goldmine of a story. The DS (http://deadspin.com/5841835/all-the-details-of-the-sarah-palin+glen-rice-coitus-youve-been-waiting-for) article today just blew me away.
It was all done in a respectful way, nothing hurried. The Palin-Rice liaison was basically the middle portion of a Boyz II Men slow jam.
