Something that I have been tossing about for a little while is the idea of getting a tattoo. Nothing too big as I don't quite understand the appeal of getting one's whole body tattooed like I see some people have.

Basically looking at getting an eagle on the side of my left arm. Hoping to incorporate the flag into it as well.

I have one major problem. My own head is against me when I do these kind of things, I get into my own head. I have passed out getting blood taken and each time it was because I worked myself up too much prior.

Basic question is; how bad does it hurt? It doesn't seem to be the pain that gets me with needles, just the whole idea of something stabbing into me. I am not bad with pain when it is not something that I have to anticipate (had back problems that kept me from being able to move for a couple days before and while it hurt like mad, I made it through with no problem; compare it to my wife who is quick to tears and breaking down when she is in pain). It's the whole knowing that something is about to happen that gets me.

Secondary question(s) would be; is there anything in particular I should look for in a place which I may go to get this done (anything that should throw up a red flag immediately that may not be readily noticed)? What kind of recovery time for healing? About how much do they generally cost?

I know that I can find these answers with google searches but I know we have a very good collection of people here that cover most walks of life. After 11 years this has become the go to place for this kind of question.

Everyone has different pain tolerance, but I personaly don't think they hurt that bad. A lot of it also depends on where you get it. Where it sounds like you are thinking about shouldn't hurt that much.

Recovery time is really nil. You need to take care of it for a few days, put ointment on it, don't scratch it or peel it and that is about it.

As for finding a reputable place, read onlibe reviews and go visit them yourselves. Talk to the artists and see who you get a good vibe from. Every shop will have books up front with the artists pictures and drawings in them, so you can see their work. For me it is all about comfort level and the vibe I get from somewhere, and as long as the online reviews are good that is what I go with. I don't even think about cost, there are certain things you don't bargain hunt for. Look for a well lit, obviously clean shop where the artists aren't smoking inside, etc...

I ihave several and each one has been a joy to get, thinking about adding another one. The key is making sure you are ready and having fun with it. And be careful, they are addictve.

Animals must look at us defacing our bodies and shake their heads.

Basically a +1 here...I have 3, I have the 4th design almost complete, it's a little more intensive and will cost more than my other 3 combined, but I am excited to get it..

Personally, I've never seen a tattoo that I didn't think was tacky and ugly (other than military people's tats), but from what I've heard friends and family say, it doesn't hurt badly. It's more the idea that a needle is stabbing you that causes the problem, not the actual act. Also, I think most tattoo shops now days are very clean and professional. One that isn't would be in the minority. I would think that ones which are only open very late at night are the most fishy.

I'm sure that is exactly what they do

And while they're distracted, we put a bullet into their brain and then eat the meat!

He's aiming that at me. Goes back a little ways (to me posting the first thing that popped into my head about a topic) but once in a while I get a post like that from him.

Did you ask why dogs lick each other's asses? At least humans keep that in the bedroom.

I am generally in that same category, or had been. Really liking the idea of the eagle and flag on the arm though. Some people take it too far, in my opinion, but that is their choice.

I usually kill rabbits by shooting a can off a post with a shotgun 10 yards away and lining up the rabbit 30 yards behind the can.

Smart, get them thinking that they are going to watch you shoot the can and then BAM. :)

That reminds me of an image I saw on the BBC website earlier today.

EDIT - I guess if you are interested in getting a tattoo you may be interested in the story the picture was taken from (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15060691).

I've wanted to get a tattoo, but Lathum has seen my visceral reaction to the sound of the needle.

I can admire the beauty of a well done tattoo, but for me personally, no interest in it and not much interest in dating girls with lots of tattoos, which shrinks the pool in Vegas considerably.

Glad to see I am not the only one who gets a little annoyed seeing the misspelled thread title.

I kinda felt like I should run to the English Teachers Weep thread.

I have two so far. And I have plans for more. Actually I have a design in my head for my next one, but am thinking about where it's going to go. Another one I have an idea of what I want, but have yet to get it drawn.

I'm starting to think about where I want to go to get them done. I have a friend getting some work done right now, might go to the guy doing his, depending on how his turns out...
